5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi emmie take the plunge and weigh then you'll know what you're up against and also it will be good to see how many lbs you are dropping. Also take measurements as sometimes on this woe you lose inches when the scales show no loss Smile

HugAndRoll · 03/04/2013 08:52

I'm on a feed day today. Haven't actually eaten yet but about to have breakfast. Strange how I went to bed hungry but got up not too bad. I feel tired though so we are having a relaxing pj morning.

HugAndRoll · 03/04/2013 08:53

Btw although you have prob guessed this is HopAndEggRoll in non Easter format.

Bramblesinafield · 03/04/2013 09:09

Well done its a boat. I'm going to take the children for a walk today - I've a week away coming up and am under no illusions that it won't be possible to fast - I can keep active whilst away though.

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 03/04/2013 09:11

Morning everyone Grin

Have had a truly overindulgent Easter, but fasting today. First fast since a mini on Friday and haven't been counting or weighing at all so I will see where I am after today/Friday fasting. Friday is normal weigh in day.

Put on a pair of size 10 jeans that fit yesterday, much less overhang than there was a month ago in size 14! So that's positive. My sister is a 6-8 and I put on a stretchy pair of Primark 8 skinny jeans - and I did them up! Definite overhang and could hardly move but they were on GrinGrinGrin

Love love love this WOE and have turned a few of my work colleagues on to it too Grin

HugAndRoll · 03/04/2013 09:29

I am currently a (large) 14 as PND and anxiety meant I didn't have it in me before now to lose weight after the birth of ds2 (11mo). I was a size 10 pre-pregnancy and long for the day I can get back into those clothes.

Tbh at the moment it feels like I will never get there as I've started and failed so many times since ds2's birth.

swallowedAfly · 03/04/2013 09:33

you'll get there hug. if you're in a better state of mind now it will be so much easier and self fulfilling - succeeding will make you feel good and feeling good will feed back into it itms. sorry to hear about the PND and anxiety - hellish stuff.

ellenbrody · 03/04/2013 09:48

Welcome to all new posters. Trying to stick to TDEE whilst doing 16:8 during the school hols, which is actually quite hard as MFP sets it at 1450, quite low.
At least in hols I've got time to add a bit extra exercise and eat those cals back! There is SO much chocolate in the house!

Lots of black coffee until at least 1, but I've got a few errands to run today so may be able to push through till a bit later.

Good luck to all of you that are fasting today.

SlipperyNipple · 03/04/2013 09:53

2nd fast of the week today. Had a bad day yesterday. Was so tired I comfort ate all day. I was tired because of hunger on Monday night after fast so I do need to work out a way to avoid that. I'll try and work out calories so that I have enough for a pre sleep drink of milk or something.

I really want to make this work for me. I do wonder if going up to 600 calories might be good for me at the moment because if it stops me being so tired then I eat much more normally the next day. I will think about it.

Work fasting is actually easy for me. Miso soup from pret and apple for lunch. Bought my own miso soup now to save money. I also like a veggie oxo cube drink with just a dash of milk.

Warm thoughts to all those fasting today.

emmief77 · 03/04/2013 10:13

Hug
I know how you you feel, when my twins were born I suffered with PND and anxiety too. My twins are nearly 10, and I still take anti-depressants, I find the Winter months especially hard. I have not been motivated, my low mood over the last few months, has caused me to overeat instead Blush. I'm currently squeezing myself into size 14, so am really a size 16. I've really let myself go, my appearance is pretty shoddy too Sad

I'm with you on feeling I'll never get there, as I've also started and failed so many times too. When I talked to my usually supportive DH about this WOL, he rolled his eyes, and sighed.. I could almost hear him thinking "here we go again"

So what is different at the moment? A few things, firstly the lighter mornings, and brighter days. Secondly, being fed up with waddling along instead of walking. Thirdly, having to have my photo taken for a whole family portrait in 6 weeks time which is going to be a displayed canvas print scared

peplum41 · 03/04/2013 11:11

hugandroll I like your new name! And Hi emmie.

seratonin I dont think Primark indulge us with vanity sizing, as Im a 20 there but a 16/18 in most other shops so wahey on squeezing into a pair of their size 8 skinny jeans! Smile

ellenbrody that seems a rather mean TDEE? Have you tried any other online TDEE calculators?

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 03/04/2013 11:45

Thanks peplum! GrinGrinGrin

I am buzzing today Smile

postmanpatseasterbunny · 03/04/2013 11:58

Morning all

Tried to swap my easter bunny for a cat to get my name back to normal but can't get on to the registration page so I'll have to hop around here for a bit longer!

Fasting today, have gained 400g since yesterday which is a lot for me, I'm usually more stable. Gym later, though DP has gone off in the car all day so I have to walk or get the bus, which I guess is no bad thing except that there is such a cold wind, brrr.

I ordered a fitbit one today with my birthday money, anyone else got one?

serotonin sounds great! I managed size 10 skinny jeans in Monsoon yesterday which made me smile. Now if only I could grow 2 inches taller so I don't need to get them taken up...

IDismyname · 03/04/2013 14:19

Hi Everyone

I'm on my second fast day of the week, today. Did Monday, then today... I like to get them over with as soon as possible!

I've got 2 questions:

  1. Why do I wake up not feeling hungry after a fast day, then when I actually eat something, my appetite just grows and grows? I'm on week 4 of this woe.
  1. Where do the 5:2 group stand on tomato juice? I find that if I have a small glass of tomato juice with worcester sauce it helps kill the late afternoon hunger pains.

Is it considered a "Fast Breaking" substance??!!

ELR · 03/04/2013 15:34

Hi blue not sure about the eating thing and appetite growing but this happens to me too maybe someone else who's been doing this longer will know. I am on week 7 of this woe.

The tomato juice would still be classed as breaking a fast I think as it has calories but its prob a good fast breaker!

swallowedAfly · 03/04/2013 15:41

anything with cals is a fast breaker so tomato juice is, yes.

many people find that eating wakes hunger. hence so many on here choose to put it off as long as possible on a fast day (and some of us on non fast days too).

if i eat in the morning i tend to be hungry all day - i'm guessing this is due to insulin and blood sugar levels spiking up and then coming down again (triggering a sense of hunger). many find if hunger is ignored briefly it goes away and i suspect that's to do with the up and down of insulin etc.

not fasting again today. too cross about police response (they seem to see it as a dispute rather than an attack and comparable to two blokes getting into a dispute rather than a man randomly attacking a woman and child). will see how i feel tomorrow but i think this week may be a non starter.

BsshBossh · 03/04/2013 16:05

saf sorry you're going through such a rubbish time with that twat neighbour and the police.

I'm on a fast today rather than my usual Thursday as it's still Easter in our house as DH is off all week and we do alot of social eating (in and out) as a result. I had a sneaky mid-week weigh in and have put on 2lbs so we'll see what Friday's official weighin comes to.

I'm not too pissed off though as I've had loads of fun this holiday and also I know I can lose it again.

swallowedAfly · 03/04/2013 16:07

thanks bssh - it's not so bad it's just a pita of not having invited it and dealing with it being a hassle then it not being dealt with properly meaning more dealing with it being even more of a pita.

tiring dealing with messes that are not of your making.

maybe it is the 'angst' that is keeping my weight stable Grin not sure how many calories angry frustration burns

wildwater · 03/04/2013 17:24

Apologies for previous post when I boasted about not touching chocolate - yesterday I had several squares of this amazing chili chocolate, which I really enjoyed. And a scoop of gingernut icecream. And some wine too.

LL, friend & myself worked incredibly hard all day shifting boxes etc downstairs and then into two great truck-loads, heading north & south. Can't believe how much stuff was crammed into this house - all the rubbish, and the effort required to deal with it. We are beyond exhausted.

Today there's major cleaning to do, plus the final signing over of the business, a busy night as usual in the shop, then a full stock-take ready for handover to new owners. Shock

Anyway, I'm going to fast today. Stuff happening is not a reason to fall by the wayside!

Not sure how often I'll manage to go online for a while. If you don't hear from me, I'll be thinking of you all and looking forward to catching up.
Meanwhile, thanks to everybody for encouragement and communicationThanks

FallingOver · 03/04/2013 18:30

I have a question: what is 16:8. Is that like an 8 hour eating window? Should you only observe that on fast days or every day? Also, how quickly am I likely to see the scale move (downwards) - have people found it to be a weekly thing, or a daily thing?

I fasted all day yesterday, and managed to hold out till my evening meal, which was shakshuka with one egg (baked egg on bed of spicy tomatoes and peppers), some cucumber and radish, a little bit of butter bean and artichoke puree, and about three slices of homemade soda bread. I think that might have been too much, if only I'd left out the bread!!

Today, I've been bad: cup of roobus tea, flat white, and two mini lobster tail pastries which my husband kindly but unhelpfully brought back from the coffee shop. Actually that's a good question: how to stop well-meaning spouses from sabotaging diet efforts!

We plan to have Nigel Slater's prawn noodle soup for supper, so hope that will be nice and light to make up for my sugarfest earlier Blush

Must drink water!

emmief77 · 03/04/2013 19:13

how does this sound for my first fast:

Breakfast: Special K, fruit & fibre
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Nothing
Dinner: Pasta twirls mixed with tuna and baked beans. Muller Light yoghurt.

FallingOver · 03/04/2013 19:20

Hi emmie I'm a newbie as well - so also in the process of figuring it out. I'd probably try to stay away from carbs etc for my evening meal if I were you. With baked beans as well, it's probably going to take you over the 500cal limit. Maybe stick to loads of vegetables/salad instead? Also, do you really need the yoghurt afterwards?

I think, but maybe I'm wrong, that Kellogs cereals/all processed cereals are actually quite high in calories. Possibly something like a bowl of porridge would be lower and would fill you up for longer. I've found that it's probably going to take me a couple of attempts to get the fast day 'right' - stick with it!

emmief77 · 03/04/2013 19:39

Hi fallingover

I'm a bit confused, I thought I could eat pasta on fast days??

The Muller light yoghurt and Special K has become part of my daily routine, I figured that as they were "low fat" they would be ok Blush..

Maybe I'll count today as a "normal" day, and try again tomorrow. I made carrot soup today ready for tomorrow Smile

FallingOver · 03/04/2013 19:46

As far as I understand it, nothing's forbidden as such so you are 'allowed' to eat pasta - it's just that it clocks up the calories rather quickly. For instance, according to MFP, 80g of cooked fusilli is 300 calories. I'm open to correction though, maybe I'm wrong! Any experienced 5:2-ers with knowledge around?

mehefin · 03/04/2013 19:57

Hi FallingOver

There are no 'rules' about what to eat on fast days just suggestions . Is that what you've eaten today? If that works for you and the portion sizes come to about the 500 calorie mark then that's a good start.

There is a general feeling that carbs make you feel hungrier on a fast day so many stick to protein and veg.

Many of us are going for not eating for as long as possible on a fast day but again you don't have to do it that way and it's something that gets easier with time

Use your first fasts to find out what works best for you - even a 'failed' fast teaches us something
