The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

anyone else find that they really can't eat what they used to?

I bought some luxury dark chocolate truffles from Lidl, simply because they were vegan. They were absolutely scrumptious, but, after eating half a dozen or so I found they'd lost their appeal! I began to feel uncomfortable and bloated, so I ended up eating them very sparingly - and even giving some away to my next-door neighbour and her kids! Shock

greenfig · 02/04/2013 17:32

Hi all, sounds like we've all had a large Easter Grin
brambles I too have put on 4lbs Shock & have fasted & done a Jillian today. I ate all sorts but did 16:8 each day as I was actually still full from the previous day! Was really fun & delish but so ready to be back to it today.
Thinking of you saf hope it went well with the police.

mehefin · 02/04/2013 17:54

Hi FallingOver sounds like this will suit you well.

It is good to drink lots throughout the day when fasting to avoid dehydration.

FallingOver · 02/04/2013 18:05

Thanks Mehefin - that reminds me to go and get a big glass of water. I am bad for keeping hydration levels up generally. So, the thinking is that tomorrow I should eat normally/whatever I want, is that right?

Bramblesinafield · 02/04/2013 18:14

Hi falling over. Yes, eat what you would normally eat - just don't go over the top, I think. I find I'm not as hungry/can't eat as much the day after a fast.

dines · 02/04/2013 18:38

Hi fallover I started at ur weight and I am also 5" 4 im on my 5-6 week doin this and im bouncing up and down between 8 and a half stone and goin bk up 3 pounds .ppl might think thats a really low weight but the way ppl carry it is a big difference mine is all in the stomach.. fallover ur gonna brilliantly at this. It is hard at the beginning but u get used to the fast days and look forward to them after uv had an indulgent couple of feed days.. when is urfast day?

HopAndEggRoll · 02/04/2013 19:38

I'm on a fast day but have a dilemma.

I had 2 boiled eggs and an apple for lunch and the plan was to have 1/2 tub of covent garden minestrone soup with a bread roll. Wonderful. Problem is I ate my roll dipped in the soup, pushed the soup around for a bit, ate about 1/4 of my bowl (so 1/8 of the tub) and couldn't face eating anymore. I really didn't feel the love (I like the soup but you know when you feel really "off" something?).

So, my problem is I'm hungry but only have 54 calories. What do I do?! I mean, I'm really hungry, not head hungry. In the house I have breadsticks, popcorn and other than that cereal and then high cal things like Easter eggs. Maybe I could have some popcorn.....

BsshBossh · 02/04/2013 19:50

Had a lovely day out today as DH and I are still off work. But it meant a lot of most enjoyable overeating :) so will do a mini fast tomorrow. This is what I love about my weightloss journey - the fact that I'm much more aware now of what I have to do to get my eating back in balance. It's terrific and it means I'm thinking like a slim person.

ELR · 02/04/2013 21:40

Have come to bed early, after a stressful day it's all I can do to stop myself having a G&T.
Can feel a headache coming on but think its tension not dehydration as have drank quite a bit today. I am hoping tomorrow will be a better day stress wise but at least I can have a big slice of cake if not!

Welcome to the new posters this WOE is truly fab!

ellenbrody · 02/04/2013 21:42

Damn, was doing well until I made some bread rolls for DD's to have with soup. They both then had dinner at friends, so the rolls were just sitting, looking at me, you know, as they do....(500 cals later Blush)

HotPanda · 02/04/2013 21:46

Oh hop I'm too new at this to have any sensible ideas. I find hot/cold extremes help me, so either a massive cup of hot water or an ice pop.
Do you have any baked beans or spaghetti hoops in? I would suggest an egg but see you've already had two!

I've been on an eat day today, wasn't doing too badly, hot cross bun for breakfast, soup with added chicken for lunch but then I ate an entire Easter egg. I had chicken and spinach for dinner as penance. Smile finished the day on just over 1500 cal which I am pleased about.
I also did a stint in the gym.

Fast day tomorrow. I struggle at work, I am used to working through my lunch break and slowly eating my lunch throughout the afternoon. Does anyone have any suggestions of things I can graze on to fool my body into thinking I'm feeding it? Last week I tried fasting at work and failed both times, so I am determined to do better tomorrow.

HugAndRoll · 02/04/2013 21:55

I weighed out some popcorn and had a coffee. Got enough calories for one more coffee (these were factored in prior to my soup aversion). I'm still hungry but will have my other coffee before bed and look forward to my feed day tomorrow.

Northstarmum · 02/04/2013 22:01

hotpanda when I fast at work I do have lunch in the form of a soup and breadsticks. I think it helps me to be fuller at lunchtime to make it through the afternoon and resist the snacks around the office! I've also discovered I need herbal tea and chewing gum for a successful fast Blush. I guess it depends whether you really want to go right through without eating. You could try the good old hard boiled egg as a standby, carrot sticks, cup a soup/miso soup/bovril? If I have any better ideas ill come back!

Southeastdweller · 02/04/2013 22:08

hot What about rice cakes? Or some fruit (but be careful with bananas)? Maybe bring in some boiled eggs from home if you don't have a kitchen at work.

For lunch at work I have a cup of miso soup and an apple.

emmief77 · 02/04/2013 22:15

Can join? I've just bought the Kindle version of the book after hearing and reading great success stories

akarucker · 02/04/2013 22:53

southeastdweller out of interest, why did you say be careful about bananas? Is it just because they are a higher calorie fruit, or another reason? I just ask because I often eat one on fast days so want to make sure I'm not sabotaging anything.

Southeastdweller · 02/04/2013 23:00

Aka Just that compared to some other fruits most people like to eat daily, they're high in calories (95). It's easy to eat two in an afternoon or morning. I have one every work fast day for breakfast but that's it. Smile

postmanpatseasterbunny · 02/04/2013 23:08

Welcome emmie always room for more here!

ELR · 03/04/2013 07:47

Morning everyone! Is everyone having a lie in? I've been awake since 6.15am!!
Welcome emmie you will love this woe it takes a few weeks to get into it just remember to drink lots.
aka I think bananas are deceptive a medium one is about 90 calories where as a whole box of raspberries 150g is only 48 calories.
Happy fasting everyone.

Bramblesinafield · 03/04/2013 07:48

H Emmie.
Phew!, as predicted the additional Easter weight is carbs and water and yesterday I managed to shift 2.5 labs of the 4lbs bounce back up. Hopefully with another fast tomorrow ill be back on my way to target.

I'm certainly learning a lot about my triggers and my relationship with food doing this woe. I know there's a certain time of day (about 7pm) that I have to get through as that's when I want to give in. I also understand more about eating for eating's sake, rather than because I'm hungry or the meal is special.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 03/04/2013 07:56

Had lovely thai dinner out with dh last night & ate so much. Feel very bloated this morning so decided to weigh myself & I'm 4lb heavier than yesterday. Obviously it's not fat that's been put on overnight but just wanted to share with you that body weight does & can fluctuate a fair amount.

Looking forward to my fast day today to get me back on track :o

HotPanda · 03/04/2013 08:21

northstar and southeast I do have soup for lunch. I'll have that about half 2 ish to get my 18 hours in first. Carrot sticks or a chopped up apple could work as I can munch bits as I work, and can stretch it out to feel like I am eating for an hour or so.
Cheers!

Hi emmie I'm quite new too, only on week 3. The guys on this thread are great at support.

emmief77 · 03/04/2013 08:33

Thanks for the welcome Smile

I haven't braved the scales yet, I am too scared Blush

Have been reading through this and associated threads for tips

swallowedAfly · 03/04/2013 08:36

morning Smile

thanks for all the support yesterday.

i didn't fast again yesterday but today i weigh 11.1.2 - so .6 down after another eating day and only .2 up since my last fast which was good friday.

strangely stable for me. not sure if i can manage a fast day - don't seem into it this week - could be school hols or having been a bit stressed out and down. not sure. probably would do me good to do one but on the other hand i think it's not the end of the world if i don't this week and i'm quite interested at what is going on without fasting at the minute as my body seems to be staying really level. maybe a rest and stabilising and then shaking things up again might be just what it needs Confused

anyway. good luck to all fasters today, well done all losers and don't sweat it to the bouncer uppers.

Itsaboatjack · 03/04/2013 08:37

Morning all. It's my normal weigh in day today and after a chocolate and wine heavy weekend, and two fasts becoming only mini fasts I wasn't looking forward ti it. But I have managed to lose 1lb. I did do quite well on the exercise front though so I guess that saved me.

18lbs in 10 weeks now :)
