5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Didn't drink anywhere near enough water ystday on my fast day. Wicked headache last night. Morning all.

SaltyandSweet · 02/04/2013 08:58

Had a food crazy four days but also walked tons exploring new cities so maybe it balanced out? [wishful thinking!] I would normally have weighed in yesterday but think I'll wait till after I fast today and tomorrow since the number on the scale tends to get stuck in my head and not in a good motivating way. Will fast again on Friday too. I always do ADF but another week of consecutive fasts to try to get back on track ... It was those yummy hotel breakfast buffets that really undid me this past weekend. Didn't help that my DH keeps thinking I'm "starving" myself if I try to control what I'm eating whilst on holiday Hmm

saf So sorry to hear some random idiot thought he could abuse you in such a vile manner. Glad to hear you've called the police, that guy needs to learn that it's never acceptable to spout such hate. Hope you have a better day.

mehefin · 02/04/2013 09:02

I'm just emerging from my work marathon, pre 5:2 I would have bought a couple of huge bags of chocolate buttons or galaxy counters to see me through - never entered my head this time.

Saf sorry to hear of your unpleasant encounter and well done for speaking out about it. I always look forward to your posts and I'm willing you on to see 10 - whole numbers are very important psychologically.

Peplum hi , hope all is going well . I think it is helping me greatly to think in terms of 24 hour blocks so that even if I've been working all night I still only need 24hrs worth of food that 'day' - really means a lot less being eaten over the course of a week

Thanks for all the encouragement earlier. This WOE seems to be suiting me and this thread helps loads

Bramblesinafield · 02/04/2013 09:10

Saf, good for you for reporting it. Hope you get some support from the police.

SlipperyNipple · 02/04/2013 09:11

Swallowed - that must have been very upsetting. I agree that you must report. Hopefully they will go round and have a word with him.

I did my 7 th fast yesterday and it went really easily but then my night was terrible. I felt anxious and hungry and unsettled. Spent a couple of hours awake. After my other fasts I might feel a little tense as I went to bed but I would drop off and have a good sleep.

Does this happen to anyone else? Milky drink before bedtime perhaps?

swallowedAfly · 02/04/2013 09:29

thanks all - dreading the police coming and wondering if it will make things worse but have to do something i think. guy is a proper thug type - dresses like a militia leader in the bible belt and permanent face of thunder. i'm just baffled that a grown man would stand swearing and shouting at a woman and child in the street. his teenage son is a carbon copy with a gun - had issues before as i had to call the police to complain that he was shooting out of his bedroom window in a residential area which seemed just slightly dangerous to me Hmm i actually live in a nice village which goes to show you don't have to be on a council estate from hell to deal with these types.

mehefin · 02/04/2013 09:31

Slippery I sometimes have an instant horlicks and a chocolate covered rice cake before bed on a fast day.

When I have to sleep in the day I have weetabix as a sleep trigger food ( nothing to do with fasting ) but routine can be a good thing at bedtime and fasts are out of your usual routine so maybe you need to set up a new one

SlipperyNipple · 02/04/2013 09:34

Thank you Mehefin - will try that.

sweetkitty · 02/04/2013 09:36

SwallowedAfly - what a scumbag, what kind of person shouts at someone in front if their child Hmm and Angry for you

Not much to report here after disaster fast yesterday, having an eating day, still have the headache from yesterday too but that's quite common for me Hmm going to drink loads of water today and eat healthily. Poor DD3 is unwell and we are waiting on a delivery so going nowhere. Still the sun is shining.

Chocupid · 02/04/2013 10:09

Hi all, hope you had a nice Easter!

I've lost the plot a little recently, after plateauing for 5 wks I decided to do 4:3 the week before Easter, and put 2lb on!!!
So went off the rails and ate everything in sight for nearly a week.

Only to start my period Saturday (sorry TMI but relevant), so the gain i now realise was probably just water retention, and I've ruined the momentum.
Am fasting today to get back in my routine, but cant exercise for another week yet as had eye surgery last week, so need to be good with my fasts

I wasn't expecting TOTM as I only got rid of one 9 days ago Shock

so totally unexpected! Come to think of it my last one was out of sync too, so can't be the surgery!
I'm 43, could it be the start of the menopause?

swallowedAfly · 02/04/2013 10:15

it could be chocupid. you can have blood tests to verify i think. my mum started having unexpected periods and very heavy sudden bleeds when hers started so it isn't always 'missing' periods that is the sign.

Dawndonna · 02/04/2013 10:39

swallowed so sorry this has happened to you. Hope it gets resolved and the arse comes to his senses after the police have had a not to gentle word with him.

I've lost a couple of pounds this week. Very happy.

Chocupid · 02/04/2013 10:42

A blood test really, oh that sounds like something I should check out. Thanks swallowed hope the moron who abused you gets what he deserves, and your feeling better, get a good fast day under your belt, that will help you feel stronger! Flowers

Northstarmum · 02/04/2013 12:05

Hi all.

saf that sounds really horrid. I hope it all works out for you and that you have some good neighbours around for support.

chocupid I had a similar experience about a year ago- it coincided with a virus and the gp told me that the affect on my TOTM was probably due to the virus. She advised me to keep a diary over several months and if I was still concerned about irregular periods to go back. They settled down so i didn't have to. I am desperate to fast after too much Wine, chocolate and cheese this weekend at my mil and no exercise since the start of the school hols. Can't get any full fasts in until at least Thursday so I am trying some mini fasts to undo damage. A sneaky jump on the scales yesterday was depressing so I'm going to wait until after a proper fast to weigh again, even though normally I'm a daily weigher and can cope with the odd ups and downs.

silverbeetle · 02/04/2013 12:18

Afternoon (just) all.
Managed to fast yesterday although it was really hard, probably as I didn't really have anything to do other than ferry DD around and help DS with a bit of homework. I kept fantasizing about having a slice of Panatone which is sitting under a glass cake dome in the kitchen. I've started to behave like the dog and salivate when I walk near it [buwink]. Normal eating day today so will have some at lunchtime.

Poor Swallowed, there are really some ignorant, nasty people around and yes they do crop up in all sorts of places. He sounds typical of a underachieving, inadequate bully. Bet the son was trying to shoot some defenseless bird or other animal! It's at times like this I wish I had a tazer, a quick zap in the n*uts would have sorted him out. Well done in calling the police, he needs to know he can't behave like that and you will not be intimated, which is probably what he's banking on [buangry]. Sending lots of support.

tomorrowweeat · 02/04/2013 12:53

Agree with all that has been said SAF, don't be intimidated.

Had a welcome fast yesterday and have just broken it with a handfull of nuts and raisins - they tasted sooooooooooooo yummy but over the weekend I had been eating all sorts of delicious stuff but didn't appreciate nearly so much as not really properly hungry I suppose.

ComeTalkToMe · 02/04/2013 13:01

Hi all,

saf that sounds awful, hope you and your son are ok. Guy sounds like an arse!

Hope everyone had a good Easter.

I managed a mini fast on Friday, and to stay with TDEE on Saturday which led to a new low of 12.4 on Sunday morning, but last two days of quite indulgent eating has bounced me back up to 12.8!! Fasting today so hope I'll see a little move downwards on the scale tomorrow or Thursday. I meant to ask if anyone else finds that the scales don't move down the day after a fast but they do the next day? I realise not everyone weighs every day!

akarucker · 02/04/2013 13:09

cometalk yes I find quite often that the scales are a day behind my fast. It's quite nice to wake up after an eating day to find I'm down. I do ADF and it's all jumbled up. Not complaining though. Down 11lbs in 7 weeks. Could be more with ADF, I know that, but I like ADF so that I don't have to restrict at all on eat days.

kiwidreamer · 02/04/2013 13:33

Just popping up to say hi, after getting disillusioned following MFP for the past month I read the 5:2 book over Easter weekend and today is my first fast day.
So far so good, just starting to feel like something to eat would be nice, its a bit hard sorting the kids lunch / snacks when there are stirrings in one's tum but no proper hunger pangs just yet, I figure its best if I wait as long as I can before eating. I've even mapped out my 500cal allowance on MFP but not overly tempted to eat just yet, thought I'd see if I can make it to 1.30pm and then maybe 2.30pm if not desperate by then!

But its more than likely because I ate quite a lot over the weekend that I've got plenty of reserves to work from!!!

I currently weigh 79kgs (12st 6oz I think) and want to get down to 75kgs (11st 11oz) asap really and 70kgs (11st) by end of the year.

I'm taking the kids to the animal park tomorrow, was happy buying treats at supermarket this morning as I kept thinking I can eat a little bit of all of this tomorrow :) we'll see how I'm feeling later on today when I bake the ham and cheese scrolls to take on the picnic!!!!

Treacleq · 02/04/2013 14:41

Afternoon all! Just catching up on the weeks events - quickest thread ever!

Only managed 6:1 last week due to all the social commitments and didn't do my normal Monday fast either due to being off work - back on track today though :) Was far too scared to weigh myself last week so normal Thursday weigh in will resume on Thurs, fingers crossed for even a tiny loss!

Everyone seems to be doing really well! Keep on posting - it;s so motivational to hear from you all :)

Chocupid · 02/04/2013 15:15

Thanks northstarmum yes I do track them so will be easy to spot more irregularities, and if its a virus lets jope its one that puts you off your food Grin

I'm finding today's fast is going quite well, not tempted by food yet, even tho theres lots of yummy things in the house.
I'm hoping to get to 6pm on my herbal tea then have a chicken salad.

Sorry, if anyone is like me... and prefers not to read about food when fasting!

ELR · 02/04/2013 15:58

Hi all fasting today not finding it too bad but it is def not the easiest one I've done! I've had a cup of tea and some tuna mouili wrap things with edamane soya beans and a miso dip from M&S 145 calories so quite good and tasty too.

Not sure what to have for dinner DH is at football and kids will have chicken and pasta, maybe I will make a chicken Ceasar salad with no dressing!

saf hope it went ok with the police.

Bramblesinafield · 02/04/2013 16:54

Hi all, def not easiest one today, but still feel uncomfortable after the weekend's lovely food - anyone else find that they really can't eat what they used to?

Salad and light soup for a very late lunch, going to press on now and have supper around 7 ish, then fast again Thurs.

Itsaboatjack · 02/04/2013 17:01

saf that sounds horrendous. I hope the police are able to do something.

Fast day yesterday was abandoned when I succumbed to chocolate in the evening. I went till about 5.30 though before eating so it'll count as a mini fast. Fasting again today, feeling a bit hungry now but I've got to go and collect dd2 from nursery before I eat.

Welcome kiwidreamer, that's a good plan to take it an hour at a time and keep putting off eating as long as possible.

FallingOver · 02/04/2013 17:02

Hello

Can I join you?

I'm 5'4", currently at 9 stone without clothes, as always and would like to lose about half a stone. I think 8st7 was my best 'fighting weight'. I went down to about 8 stone last summer for my wedding, but I think I might have overdone it a little - looked a little gaunt in photos.

Thinking back to how I did lose the weight, I realised that I had effectively been doing 5:2 (or rather, 2:5) for about 6 months, through skipping breakfast and most days just having one main meal, usually at lunchtime. The weight just gradually dropped off me, and it was such a great feeling to see the scales going in the right direction. I think this WOE suits me and is compatible with my lifestyle, plus I also quite like the feeling of not being stuffed and bloated all the time just a couple of days a week. I was considering doing something quite silly like the lemonade diet, but this is more sustainable for me in the long term, and that's what I would like to achieve.

So, I've pretty much started again today. I had a cup of herbal tea for breakfast, and cup of regular tea for lunch. I'm hoping to have some cucumber and radish salad for supper, and possible some shakshuka - baked eggs on a bed of spicy tomatoes and peppers. Would that sound like it was within the calorie range? I used to track calories on MFP, but it's much harder with homemade meals, figuring out the quantities etc.

I did manage to avoid gorging myself with chocolate for Easter Sunday but had just spent a week gorging myself with bread and pastries in France so I'm hoping to shape up by the summertime.

Hoping for some encouragement/advice, and to encourage others if I can!
