5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

HELP! I was doing OK on 5:2 - weight loss was slow but sure and I was finding it OK, although after the first couple of weeks I lost the buzz a bit and on the eating days I didn't feel so inclined to eat healthily. I have just been away for a week, eating bread, cheese and crisps and drinking litres of wine, which normally I would expect to result in a pound or two weight gain. However, on my return although too scared to weigh myself, I feel huge and the evidence is in the fact the jeans I was wearing before I went away won't even get up past my thighs, let alone do up!!!

My question is, has my metabolism been played with from the fasting? This feels like an out of proportion response by my body to a bit of over-indulgence. I feel so demotivated and p*ssed off that my hard work seems to have been completely ruined in one week. Meant to be starting fasting again tomorrow but have to say my heart is not in it at the moment!

Any similar experiences or scientific intel most welcome!

Bleugh.

If you had previously cut right back on carbs then had a carb fest week you will have gained a disproportinate amount of weight with a lot of water bloating. Don't panic, that will go just as quickly as it arrived when you cut back on the starchy carbs again. :-)

speckers · 01/04/2013 17:18

Thank you tomorrow, that's a comfort, and I'll take it as gospel as it has made me feel much better!! I was in France so you can imagine the bread-binge x

swallowedAfly · 01/04/2013 17:30

if you have lost weight then what was just a few cals over your tdee may now be a lot of cals over your tdee. remember the more weight you lose the less food you need.

also it might in part be a lot of bloating and bunged up'ness for all you know.

i quit on fasting today. another day tomorrow i guess.

speckers · 01/04/2013 17:46

It's so hard when you aren't in your routine. Back to work tomorrow after 10 days off, and will find it much easier to eat healthily and minimally! I don't count calories on days I'm not fasting but I do try not to go mad. Hard with all the Lindt bunnies just begging to be eaten...

HotPanda · 01/04/2013 19:44

Just broken my fast with chicken and veg, and am about to have some fruit and yoghurt. Will finish today just shy of my 500.

HopAndEggRoll · 01/04/2013 20:50

I am looking forward to my fast tomorrow. I feel really bloated and full of sugar. Will have put on weight which is not good for a first weigh in but this will really be my first week.

BsshBossh · 01/04/2013 21:10

Have just broken my 20th fast with homecooked (by DH) lamb curry. Next fast on Thursday. How have all the fasters done today?

ellenbrody · 01/04/2013 21:35

I'm not going to attempt to fast properly whilst being off work in a house FULL of chocolate.

What I am going to do is 16:8 everyday, trying to stick to TDEE and throwing a couple more bits of exercise into the mix.

Obviously, if I think I can push through and do 500 cals I will, but I think if I don't plan to, I will not feel guilty if I 'fail'.

I need to take the emotion, the guilt, out of eating and just do what I think will work best at the time.

Do you think this plan sounds ok?

artemis17 · 01/04/2013 21:49

Hi all...another person who is looking forward to fasting tomorrow. Even though only 1 of the four days have i over indulged its amazing how full and bleurgh i feel..and whats more last week i had a 2lb loss, so thats 5lb of the 7lb i want to lose, so im almost there...then im hoping to do 6-1 for the fasting benefits :)

BsshBossh · 01/04/2013 21:51

ellen that all sounds sensible. You know yourself the best :) 16:8 is still fasting so you get all the benefits.

Southeastdweller · 01/04/2013 21:56

Also overindulged this weekend part from Saturday when I did my usual fast. I keep telling myself Easter is only once a year.

My body needs a rest so I'm grateful for tomorrow's fast and will stay a bit longer at the gym tomorrow night.

Best of luck to everyone this week.

BsshBossh · 01/04/2013 22:00

ellen, forgot to say that I generally do 16:8 on non-fast days (not weekends though) as I enjoy the empty feeling and fasting benefits of 16 hours but also enjoy eating normally the other 8 hours :) My 8 hour eating window tends to be 2-10pm as I like eating later on in the day and going to bed on a full tummy (suits me for some reason). I plan on doing 6:1 and 16:8 when I maintain.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/04/2013 23:10

I fasted today and it was great.

Looking forward to my hot cross bun for breakfast though.

wildwater · 02/04/2013 00:50

The contents of the house are now jumping into boxes and going down to the garage ready for moving. DH & me totally exhausted, having to remember that those funny wobbly feelings are probably because we haven't actually eaten enough...so different to how we both were until relatively recently!

I just made us corn & parmesan on toast to get us through to when friend arrives with something proper for dinner later. (I have gone on strike - no more cooking from me in this house.)

DH (I shall call him LL - for Latin Lover - from now on) remarked this morning that he couldn't remember when his stomach and abdomen was so flat. I must say he is looking very sexy!

Still heaps to do before we go but at least the packing is nearly done...just taking a break online before onto the next part of the puzzle.

The sun is still shining here and I'm wearing a singlet. Went for a walk on the beach this morning to say goodbye to it all. Love it, but won't miss it.

Hope you are all having a great day/night. Smile

frenchfancy · 02/04/2013 06:27

Good luck with the move wildwater And :) at LL. My DH has also lost loads on 5:2 and looks great. Like he did when we first met. I think when weight creeps on slowly you don't notice it, but when it disappears you certainly do.

I fasted yesterday. The chocolate is not really appealing to me. I have started to prefer the dark bitter type and the DCs have only got the sugary sweet milk stuff. I even refused an Easter cake on Sunday as it just looked too sweet (I have always had a very sweet tooth).

I'm on a bit of a plateau at the moment, but I'm only 1.3kg off target so it doesn't really matter, at least I'm not bouncing.

dines · 02/04/2013 07:10

Good morning all first fast of the week I usually do mondays and Wednesday's. I want to try and get 3 in again this week that means ill have to do 2 in a raw.. I have a party saturday night so cant do it then and can't do it sunday as im goin to my aunties for a roast.. will try today tomorro and friday.. wish me luck.. is anyone else fasting today?

heelsandflats · 02/04/2013 07:33

Hi, I'm struggling with this WOE. I am now on week 7 and have stuck to 2 or 3 fasts a week. I have tracked my eating on non-fast days and I haven't gone over my TDEE. The thing is for the last 3 weeks I've been trying really hard and exercised (spinning mainly) 3 or 4 times a week and for the last 3 weeks I haven't lost anything. In fact I have put on a pound. After the first 3 weeks I lost around 6 pounds. I am losing momentum. I do sometimes fast over two consecutive days. Do you think this has anything to do with it?

BsshBossh · 02/04/2013 07:37

heels perhaps you could reduce the amount or intensity of your exercising first to see if you start losing weight again - it could be water retention due to muscle repair...

heelsandflats · 02/04/2013 08:00

Thank you BsshBossh. I do feel bloated and I'm not sure why as not my TOTM. I did feel thinner around my middle last week but no change on the scales. Anyone else had a stall for longer than 3 weeks?

NurseEzzzaChapel · 02/04/2013 08:16

Official weigh day today. Lost some weight! Smile 1.4lb down this fortnight, which makes up a little for the 1lb up the previous fortnight. Total down: 23.2lb; total to go: 21.4lb.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 02/04/2013 08:17

Morning all! Well done everyone who had managed to restrain themselves this weekend.

I got back late last night from my trip away, where I ate & drank what I wanted. It was an all female weekend away so no partners or dcs for any of us. Weighed in this morning & put on 2lbs. Not bad considering the amount of alcohol & chocolates consumed.

Thought id fast today but not seen dh for 2 weeks so he's booked us romantic night out & sorted out babysitters for dcs. & off on our hols next week, so Not sure how much fasting ill be able to do, but will try a couple of mini fasts if I can.

Onwards & downwards everyone!

swallowedAfly · 02/04/2013 08:17

morning.

well after failing to fast yesterday, so three eating days in a row, i'm now 11.1.8. so albeit i've put on .8 of a lb i think it's a good sign that i'm not bouncing around hugely. fingers crossed it means when i do manage a fast (today i hope) it will drop well. we'll see.

called an end to the fast yesterday after a stressful incident with a man down the road shouting and swearing at me in front of my son. random abuse from a clearly horrible man who culminated in calling me an effing parasite which was quite telling. he's always been hostile and quite aggressive in manner since i moved here and i came as a single mother with an 18month old baby so with the parasite comment it all makes sense. i actually work and pay taxes but apparently that doesn't negate his BNP/daily fail view of us scumbags. ho hum. anyway i ended up having a takeaway and cuddling with ds and the dogs on the sofa. police are coming this morning as i felt i had to report it - don't want to live like that and the fact he did all this in front of my 6yo really concerned me and i need ds to know clearly this is not ok.

sorry - random splurge of non food related info. just justifying failing at my fast i guess.

will try again today but will see how i go.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 02/04/2013 08:19

heels yes I often stall for around 4 weeks at a time & then seem to lose about 3lbs in one go.

Bramblesinafield · 02/04/2013 08:35

Morning. Good luck with the move.

Well I feel really bloated and bunged up, no surprised I'm registering 4lbs heavier on the scales in the bounce up - two roast dinners in a row really have mde me feel so over full, so different from before this woe. I'm sure that with ADF and normal bathroom services resumed ill be back on my way down again! I'm looking forward to a day of fasting and mineral water - I honestly don't think I could eat even if I wasn't following this woe!
