The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all. Am glad I'm fasting today. Definitely need to counteract all the Easter eating! Going to the gym this morning too. I seem to be able to fast fine with a full house (guests, DD, DH) as I did it on Saturday so thank goodness for that.

ELR · 01/04/2013 08:35

Hi all hope everyone had a great Easter!
Monday is usually my first fast day of the week but I have put it off until tomorrow. Still feeling a little delicate after my bouts of a sickness bug Thursday and again on Saturday. Still have visitors too and more cousins arriving later on so would be quite hard to fast today. Quite pleased as have not over eaten at all this Easter weekend!
saf you will have to see under 11 this week it's inevitable!!

swallowedAfly · 01/04/2013 08:43

Grin hope you're right ELR.

enjoy your visitors and well done on not going mad this weekend.

Chipstick10 · 01/04/2013 08:58

I am fasting today. I feel sick with guilt at the chocolate I ate yesterday. I might even do an extra fast this week to make up for it. Also I feel like I haven't lost any weight for the past couple of weeks even though I have stuck to my fasts.

tracedw · 01/04/2013 09:39

Morning all, i hope every one is having a lovely indulgent/restrained weekend, we haven't gone too mad here , only had a couple of mouthfuls of chocolate and a roast dinner yesterday (plus Wine of course!)so feeling pretty good this morning.
I will fast today, as always, because we are off to a country house hotel for 3 nights from tomorrow, cant wait, i've been saving up my weekly cals for this Wink
DH is packing his running/gym gear Hmm wishful thinking!

tomorrowweeat · 01/04/2013 10:43

Too much chocolate and wine yesterday, feel awful today. Hoping a fast will sort me out. Good luck to everyone else fasting today :)

peplum41 · 01/04/2013 10:58

Hello all, fasters and piggies.
The stuck/ bouncing scales thing has been bugging me as it reminded me of something I thought I remembered from either GCSE Biology or from reading Just seventeen ( Id be reading Just 40 now to give you an idea of how long ago we're talking). Anyway, my theory was wrong but having spent about 1/2 hour looking at some weird corners of the net where people worry about carb loading and carb depleting Ive come to some sort of conclusion.

We lose a lot of water and theres something about glycogen which Im happy to admit to being vague about, in the initial stages of our diets. Therefore when we eat our normal Tdee some will be taken up again and will show on the scales as weight. You havent put fat back on because you never lost it, you lost water, you've regained water. some fat has been lost though, hence clothes being loser. If you continue with your calorie defecit the fat loss will continue, but most dieters fail as they get fed up with continual denial and perceived lack of results on the scales.

This is where 5:2 is different, so enjoy your weekend and time with your families and keep enjoying 5:2 so you dont fall off the wagon. Hope this post helps. Smile

Chipstick10 · 01/04/2013 11:49

After dipping in and put of this thread I must admit I am surprised that people are very careful on the non fast days. I am never over the top. I don't overheat and apart from Easter and xmas I don't really do sweets or chocolate. But I am not careful either. I never ever count calories on non fast days. I thought the whole point of this woe was that it was simple and non restrictive. Should I be counting calories and effectively dieting on non fast days?
.

BumBiscuits · 01/04/2013 12:03

waving and marking place.

I've been 5:2 ing since the beginning of February. I had lost 13.5lbs but had 2 weeks off following the death of a close family member. Had a lot to do. I restarted last week and was up a few lbs. Today is my 14th fast and I'm feeling fine.

This thread moves so fast, and there are lots of newbies. It will take me a while to catch up.

BsshBossh · 01/04/2013 12:09

Chipstick some people here like to count calories as years of overeating has meant they don't know how to eat normally. The great thing about this WOE is that eating normally is still alot more than what they've had to eat on calorie-restricted diets. If you know how to eat normal portions and are losing weight on this WOE then it is simple for you and you don't have to count :)

BsshBossh · 01/04/2013 12:12

Chipstick, incidentally, I spent a year prior to 5:2 counting calories and now no longer have to do so as I've learned to "eyeball" what a normal, healthy portion size is. If I find I'm not losing weight, it's because I am overeating so then I review my calories again for a bit.

Chipstick10 · 01/04/2013 12:15

Thanks Bssh . I didn't weigh myself when I first started this woe but I can see and feel I have lost weight. However after ten weeks no one has noticed. Not one person has asked if I've lost weight. Or commented that I look different so now I am questioning if I should count calories always and or perhaps add another fast day and make it three.

BsshBossh · 01/04/2013 12:25

Chipstick I wouldn't think too much about other people - they will have loads of reasons for not mentioning or noticing - but if your clothes are feeling looser and you can see changes in the mirror then you're doing fine and won't need to count cals.

Itsaboatjack · 01/04/2013 12:31

Morning all, I enjoyed lots of wine and chocolate over the weekend so happy to be back fasting today.

aka I've been doing consecutive fast days for a few weeks now, I started because circumstances meant they were the only days I could fit them in that week. I found the second day easier than the first, and it also meant I could do a full 24hrs true fast on the second day without it affecting a non fast day iyswim. I'll keep doing them while I find it easy enough, if I start to struggle then I'll change things up again. To me that's one of the best things about this woe, nothing is set in stone so you can just adapt it to suit you.

Chipstick, what BsshBossh said, a lot of things I know pretty much what's what now, but every now and then I'll check a few things or count for a few days just to make sure I'm still on the right track. If you're not weighing yourself are you taking any measurements? Have you gone down a dress size? Or are you doing this mainly for health benefits?

BumBiscuits sorry to hear of your loss. Welcome back to the thread.

peplum41 · 01/04/2013 12:42

Re; being careful on non fast days. Sometimes Im very careful, others days Im not as bothered or a bit nibbly. I dont count every calorie as much, but Ive found that even on a day when Ive thought Ive totally blown it mfp says otherwise. You cant be too sure with mfp anyway, especially as a lot of stuff is measured in cups Confused

chipstick This is another weird "fact" Ive been harbouring since my teens.
Apparently if you lose weight, say a stone, its three months until it fully shows as the body needs to catch up and adjust somehow. Ive no idea if thats true, Im happy to be corrected if wrong.

Fast day today, been for a long (and cold)walk first thing. Tummy whimpered at lack of food when I got back and I really didnt feel like fasting back then. However, had a coffee and soon felt better. Just done the Tracy Anderson Mat Workout and feel fab and ready to fast.

postmanpatseasterbunny well done on the mega fast. Let us know if it paid off.

peplum41 · 01/04/2013 12:45

Oh yes bumbiscuits meant to say the same as itsaboatjack. Welcome back indeed

postmanpatseasterbunny · 01/04/2013 12:53

Hello [busmile]

Still waiting for saf 's 'I'm finally under 11st!!' update, I see...cheering you on though!

Had plenty to eat yesterday though still under TDEE...had planned to eat the M&Ms AND the egg, but had the M&Ms and it was enough for me. No exercise apart from about 2 hours of ironing (while watching tv so not that focused!)

Thought I may see a massive bounce back up this morning after my zero calories fast day on Saturday, but no...have only gone up 100g [bugrin].

Let's hope the weather warms up now it's April and we can start to peel off the layers and show off our trimmer bodies! chipstick , maybe that's why no-one seems to have noticed?

Itslifejimbutnotasweknowit · 01/04/2013 13:52

Met up with a friend last night who when MM's prog first came out had been inspired to try it, he then raved to us about it only to be met by sceptasismBlush. So it was nice to both apologise and let him know that we were now enjoying the WoE/WoL too!Grin

Chipstick10 · 01/04/2013 14:15

itsaboat no I am not taking measurements. Last aug I happened to be in a store that had scales on show and I jumped on. I weighed 10 stone 7. I had not stepped on scales since until three weeks in to this woe and I weighed in at 9 stone 11. My clothes are hanging differently for sure and my tummy looks flatter but like I say no one has noticed. And I seemed to have stayed stagnant for a while. My dh started this woe three weeks ago and hell he's lost weight. You can see it as clear as day.

sweetkitty · 01/04/2013 14:19

Happy Easter Monday all, fast day went wrong today, I did fast for 20 hours but had a headache this morning which has just gotten worse. Part of the problem is we went out and I didn't have enough to drink, felt awful cold, shivery etc so had lunch. Will still have fast dinner though so all is not lost.

ELR · 01/04/2013 14:23

chips I know what you mean I have lost 7lbs nobody has noticed but am not exactly fat so wouldn't expect people to notice really. DH has lost 12lbs and you can really tell, we have both been fasting for 6 weeks, DH was slim anyway so he looks slimmer!! I'm hoping when I get under 10st people will notice!

IDismyname · 01/04/2013 14:56

Just checking in after a weeks holiday. I ate soooo much last week, that I was really looking forward to fasting today. I don't dare go on the scales for at least a week, in the hope I can lose what I must have put on!

However, I'm feeling so cold and miserable atm - even after a miso soup. Am off for a walk and then home to do ironing to warm myself up.

I love reading everyones comments. Its a great boost!

Thank you

HotPanda · 01/04/2013 16:06

Oh chipsticks I can sympathise. My husband has lost 2 stone on this woe, and gone from a 36 to a 30 waist. I am hideously, and horrendously jealous. He looks great, no saddlebags, a flat stomach and his double chin has gone.
This woe really suits him as he never wants breakfast and is often too busy to stop for lunch. Some days he has a 500cal dinner, others he eats a hell of a lot more!

I'm on fast day 7, and this is the easiest one so far. I'm at 21 hours and still not hungry, and haven't even thought about food.

maza66 · 01/04/2013 16:10

chips I moaned about this some weeks ago as am finding no one has noticed - in fact people are responding 'is it working?' when I tell em I'm doing this!!! ffs and these are normally ok, supportive types However I put a skirt on this morning and it is hanging off me! which is mad as I went completely overboard at the weekend. So f... em as I am saying and just keep on truckin!

Bramblesinafield · 01/04/2013 16:39

Waddles in post Easter roast. Looking forwards to ADF for the rest of the week - then a week away, but lots of walks to be had. Don't think I'll bother with the scales until a week or so after the hols!
