5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well today was meant to be my last day of an ADF week (I normally do 5:2) but I got to lunchtime and couldn't resist the lure of mini eggs / hot cross buns any longer! However, we did have a lovely low cal chicken stir fry with lots of green veg for dinner which was really nice so not feeling too terrible about it all.
Def going to do a fast day on Monday on drive up to Lake District. Planned dinner is jacket potato with beans and some salad but as we're meeting up with friends there I feel wine may come my way at some point too. So it may be more of a 20hr fast but with a more than 500 cal dinner. Better than no fast at all though eh? Grin
Enjoy your day tomorrow everyone!

BetsyVanBell · 30/03/2013 19:36

Ooh, good fast day today - was able to keep really busy and it flew by - 22 hours proper. It was actually easier than on a work day so once i'm back from holidays I should be able to get back to the regime without using 'but it's school holidays and I can't possibly do it with the kids around' excuse anticipating my future thoughts there [buwink]

School holidays have traditionally been weight gain times for me so having this WOE to keep a handle on it is revelatory.

Loads of illness at home, i've been jolly and chirpy all day but there's a niggling cough appearing, am keeping fingers crossed it was just the dust from cleaning the filthy DC's rooms.

saf love that! 10 points for managing to come up with a witty retort on the spot [bugrin]

dogsdays · 30/03/2013 20:04

Banana pancakes for breakfast - 1 banana & 1 egg mix together ensure no lumps ( I mashed banana first) then liquidised dry fried using spray oil- I had mine with tinned peaches and vanilla yoghurt - amazing[busmile][busmile][busmile]

Breadandwine · 30/03/2013 21:50

^Nothing to eat so far today and contemplating fasting completely right up until tomorrow morning, am I mad?

Postman No, you're not mad - just very ambitious! And that's a good thing! I am reluctant to eat after a 24 hour fast, and I'd like to see if I could do it - but I always ends up eating dinner with my wife.

The only thing that could go wrong, IMO, is that you'll feel hungry later on in the fast - and you'll end your fast sooner than you wanted to! But my bet is you won't feel that hunger and you'll go right through!

Good luck with it and let us know how you got on!

wildwater · 30/03/2013 22:17

Thank you BB Flowers

swallowedAfly · 31/03/2013 07:06

morning Smile well 11.1.8 after an eat day. we'll see what tomorrow brings after a big family meal. hopefully not too much more and monday's fast will see me back on track. though that track seems to be a bit of a rut at the minute. still it's going to feel very good when that 11st barrier finally gives way.

enjoy your festivities everyone.

Iwearblack · 31/03/2013 10:46

Have measured 11.0 for the last 2 weeks so hoping to break the barrier soon too!
Ready brek with melted Easter egg on top for brekkie this morning - yum! (NB not my normal breakfast honest!)

Happy Easter all! [busmile]

akarucker · 31/03/2013 10:53

iwearblack oh wow, I wish I'd thought of that breakfast! Yuuuum!

Minimammoth · 31/03/2013 12:52

Also been having a bit of a blow out over the weekend. Fast day tomorrow, which will be a challenge with DH at home. Happy Easter everyone.[busmile]

Madondogs · 31/03/2013 13:18

Happy Easter fellow fasters, hope it's a good one.[busmile]

tomorrowweeat · 31/03/2013 14:00

Hmmmmmmmmm, normal eating ...... How many chocolates is it normal to eat on Easter Sunday? [buconfused]

postmanpatseasterbunny · 31/03/2013 14:44

Happy Easter everyone [busmile]

Well, I did it...I went without eating at all from 9pm Friday night until a mouthful of bread at church about 11.30am today, followed by a chocolate croissant and some mini eggs when I got home [bugrin]

I felt fine, had a late night and lost an hour so I'm tired, but although I was gurgling a bit I didn't feel very hungry. Once I got past 8pm I didn't feel like eating anyway.

Having hovered around 59.5kg for the last week despite two fast days, I also managed to shift some weight and went down to 58.7 this morning, which is exactly 5kg (11lbs) in five and a half weeks. Hooray!

Roast dinner today and even more chocolate, yum! Back on track tomorrow.

sweetkitty · 31/03/2013 14:51

Happy Easter everyone enjoy your Easter eating days :)

HotPanda · 31/03/2013 15:39

postman I am in awe!

I had a particularly excessive feat day yesterday - it was my brothers birthday so I ate, drank, and was very merry! Paying for it today of course so craving stodgy and sugar.

However, on the upside tomorrow's plans have been cancelled, so will be doing a bonus fast.

greeneggs I've not yet opened the cellophane, but will let you know how I get on. One of them is a 20 min effort again, so that will be each morning before work.

HotPanda · 31/03/2013 15:40

Oh hell, FEAST day, not feat.

dines · 31/03/2013 16:03

Hello everyone having a fab weekend.. is anyine fasting today? How are ppl gettin o with there feed days

Southeastdweller · 31/03/2013 16:20

Happy Easter everyone[busmile]

I'm feeling the best I have for years. Lost 11 pounds in total over nine weeks, 4 pounds of this was lost just this week doing 4:3 with two days being consecutive - surprisingly easy and I highly recommend doing this if you had a naughty week like the one I had before I chose to do 4:3 to correct any damage I did.

Surely nobody's fasting today of all days?!

About to start on some chocs, Easter dinner, wine, more chocs, and more wine...as well enjoy the feeling of knowing there's no bloody work tomorrow.

akarucker · 31/03/2013 16:40

Does MM specify not to do consecutive fast days because he thinks it would just be more achievable not to, or is there another reason? I know his basic outline is to pick two non-consecutive fast days a week, but I also know that some of you have done it. Is the second day about the same as the first, or easier/harder?

Happy Easter everyone. Of course I'm asking this question because I have completely overindulged today, so I'm thinking ahead to next week.

wildwater · 31/03/2013 19:01

Sorry to be a goody-goody southeastdweller but yes, I fasted yesterday (Easter Sunday) and not one morsel of chocolate passed my lips. But very well done with your weight loss and I know how wonderful it is to be feeling (and looking) so much better than before.

I stood on the scales this morning and to my amazement they said I am now 62kg which was my immediate goal weight - being the marker between an 'overweight' BMI and a 'healthy' one for me {grin]. I am thrilled.

The plan is to let my body decide where it wants to be. I still have a good roll of fat round my middle so I know there is a way to go yet.

Meanwhile today is the day I get to pack up my clothes, kitchen and bathroom - ready to shift in multiple directions - after spending the last few months feverishly sorting & clearing. Tomorrow it all leaves this place where we have lived for almost five years. I have so much to do...but know it's all just one foot after the other and I will get through this too.

Not sure how often I will manage to go online after we become temporary gypsies but will check in here as I can. 5:2 has become a central part of my life, and this Mumsnet thread is a kind of life-line for me, as I'm sure it is for many.

Cheers to you all Flowers

silverbeetle · 31/03/2013 19:43

Very impressive wildwater and well done for getting to to your immediate goal, you must feel great [busmile]. Good luck with the move, hope it goes smoothly and look forward to hearing about your adventures.

I've tried not to be too naughty today but have eaten one of the DC's small chocolate bunnies [buhmm]. Will fast tomorrow, quite looking forward to giving my stomach a rest.

Hope everyone had a good day.

LaurieFairyCake · 31/03/2013 19:54

Hmphh. Am I unreasonable to expect to not put on weight if I eat within my TDEE?

I haven't fasted this week, instead really enjoyed the Easter food but I've stuck within my TDEE - actually I'm 800 under for the week. Ate very light a couple of days, ate very over a couple of days but ended the week 800 under.

I sort of weighed myself yesterday and the bastarding scales were trying to tell me I was 6 pounds over Shock

Southeastdweller · 31/03/2013 22:07

aka from the book:

M.M tried the consecutive system and found it too challenging to be sustainable over time, so he switched to the split version. The weight loss, improvements in glucose, cholesterol and IGF-1 that he saw are all based on this non-consecutive, two-day pattern. There's a psychological imperative here too: fast for more than a day at a time, and you may start to feel resentful, bored and beleaguered - precisely the feelings that wreck the best-made diet intentions. A critical part of this plan is that you never feel challenged for long enough to consider quitting. By the time you've had enough, breakfast is on the table and another fast has passed.

Mimi goes on to advise not doing two days in a row because it's "too hard".

I found the second day a little harder than the first but no big deal. I don't plan to do it every week but will do once a month just to mix things up a bit.

Great news on your loss wild and I hope the move goes well too. I agree that this thread's been fab for motivation.

virginposter · 31/03/2013 22:51

I have only done 2 consecutive days once bacause that was the only way I was going to be able to fit my fasts in. I found it not too difficult but wouldn't chose to do it again unless I was stuck or desperate. Like everything else in this woe, consecutive days are ok in moderation, so pick and choose when you want to do them, maybe for the same reason as me or maybe to try to shift from a plateau.

I have been fasting today due to social commitments on Friday and yesterday and therefore had my 'treats' on those days. It has been hard today not to eat the left over choc in the fridge but hey ho I can have it tomorrow [busmile]

ellenbrody · 31/03/2013 23:27

Bleugh! Feel sick!! Too much chocolate, cake and general family get together fayre!
I have gone 1000 cals over my weekly amount as I've been really bad the last couple of days. I can't imagine fasting during the school hols either and there are 12 Easter eggs looking at me from the sideboard (sigh).

I'm going to do a Jillian DVD tommorow and try and regain some semblance of control.

Hope everyone is doing ok.

swallowedAfly · 01/04/2013 07:36

morning all Smile

scales are being weird. yesterday after an eating day i had gone up to 11.1.8 from 11.1. today after another eating day with a big family meal, much champagne and wine and then a good scoff of chocolates in bed at the end of the day to my shame i am back down to 11.1 Confused

more for the 'don't pay too much attention to the scales' file Grin

meant to be fasting today (that sounds so confident) and won't be too surprised if the scales don't go down or go up given they've randomly gone down today.

hope everyone has nice plans for their bank holiday. we're chilling at home and dogsitting - 2 extra on top of our 2 - so 'chilling' might be ambitious actually.
