5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Lovely isn't it, fly! Although with the healthy food on fast days and lots of healthy mineral water and herbal teas it should be the opposite! Anyway... Off to find Jillian.

mehefin · 30/03/2013 08:27

Brambles we're all losing differently aren't we - but losing all the same. I am preparing myself mentally for a major plateau at some point and enjoying the balanced feel to my eating

Itsaboatjack · 30/03/2013 08:32

Morning all. I ended up indulging in a cup cake or two last night, so it was a mini fast rather than a proper fast. Not too disappointed though as it was the third of the week.

The weather is looking a lot nicer today than last weekend so I have no excuse not to go for a run today, so going to get my jobs done and then go for approx 6 miles. Then off out for dinner tonight for my friend's birthday.

HotPanda · 30/03/2013 08:33

brambles I've been a bit blocked up too. Trying to allow nature to take its course, but really feel like I need a good clear out.

I've bought a new Jillian, I'm bored of the shred. I've bought ripped in 30 and the lose fat burn metabolism. Will see what they are like.

postmanpatseasterbunny · 30/03/2013 09:12

Morning all :) Congrats on losses and bvb on outfits.

Fasting today after meals out two days in a row and a planned chocolate feast tomorrow. I've stayed the same weight pretty much all week but the gains on feed days have been zero or only 100g so I'm pleased about that. Two weeks off work now and hoping to be back on track with a pound a week lost. Nine pounds in five weeks is nothing to complain about anyway!

ellenbrody · 30/03/2013 09:43

hot panda swallowed brambles re: constipation. I must admit, I have suffered a bit since starting this WOL, although, thinking on swallowed s post, I kind of agree. I have always been prone, but maybe I'm just more AWARE and 'less in, less out'.
On fast days, as I tend to eat no carbs, I have a sachet of fybogel (only 4 cals) as it provides the necessary soluble fibre needed to keep things healthy!

keirahmum · 30/03/2013 10:26

morning to all fellow fasters Im having the weekend off after doing ADF last week - Im more of a lurker than a poster although have posted a couple of times but find this site invaluable (thanks to all for experience & info Flowers. I started this about 10 weeks ago & have lost 11 1/2 lbs so far amazing with little effort, but seem to have hit the dreaded plateau the last 2 weeks and havent lost anything [buhmm]. Anyway trying not to get too hung up on that as now 9st 11lbs. All I really wanted to say was Happy Easter to all & I love this WOE [busmile]

peplum41 · 30/03/2013 11:25

hi all, finally got to the end of the thread, usually lag several days behind.

ezza Thanks for the run/walk cals burned chart. Interesting that walking 5mph burns more than running, aiming to increase walking speed rather than plodding. When Ive lost another stone and toned my core will try running again(had to stop a few years ago due to tendon issues).Gonna have a nosey at the couch to 5k threads.
mehefin well done on the weight loss, I think the nights give us a bit of a headstart on the fasts because we're tucked up in bed sleeping through the worst bit of the fast day. You're now at the weight I was when I started, end of feb, but you probs look a lot less dumpy being much taller. Grin

Yesterday I weighed 12:3 after a fast day, this morning after a great night out at a 25th wedding anniversary do involving several Wine, hot buffet and some loverrly homemade wedding cake I weigh 12:1. A good reminder that scales are just dumb inaminate objects that shouldn't be allowed to dictate to us how successful we feel about weightloss efforts. Still like to hop on daily mind Wink

BsshBossh · 30/03/2013 12:11

re constipation on fast days

I always try and have a lentil-based dinner on fast days and as a result am never bunged up Grin.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 30/03/2013 12:12

Fast day here, having a cup of tea on break from trying to sort through boxes and bags of stuff in the new house. I love seeing updates from folks who aren't able to post as often as some of us. Grin

As I've posted in another thread, I'll be doing roast beef in the slow cooker for Easter, so this coming week's fast days will be moved around again. I anticipate leftovers on Monday! Hence the Saturday fast today.

HotPanda let us know how the other DVDs are. I quite like the Shred for its efficient use of time but it'd be good to have something else to mix things up with.

mehefin thanks for posting that, congratulations on your losses! :)

A good reminder that scales are just dumb inaminate objects that shouldn't be allowed to dictate to us how successful we feel about weightloss efforts. [bugrin] [bugrin] I like that

Well I did my run, 6.53 miles. Quite chuffed with that. Not eaten yet either so hopefully it was maximum fat burning.

Going to have breakfast now of scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

BlackMaryJanes · 30/03/2013 13:27

Okay guys, I know you hate me, and I know I said I would stop posting, but I just had to share this news story.

Remember my 'bran flake' diet? Well get a whiff of this:

PRESS RELEASE

Hard on the heels of the Dukan Diet, the Fast Diet and the OMG Diet comes the one that is set to blow them all away. Due to be screened on 1st April 2013 as an episode of the popular BBC2 'Nadir' science series, this 'new wind' will revolutionise our approach to eating and health.

Dr Michael Mousey ('Mickey' to his friends), the respected broadcaster and qualified wizard's apprentice, examines the extraordinary new science wafting from America:

"In the United States in the depths of the 1930s depression, lifetime expectancy actually increased. Various explanations have been offered, including - bizarrely - a lack of food, but the real reason was a change in people's eating habits.

"As children will tell you, the most valuable dietary ingredient is the humble bean. Beans are good for the heart, and the more you eat, the more you develop your expressive output.

"It makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. Beans were plentiful in Africa where our ancestors developed. And the reason why some of them left and then spread across the globe is now obvious: to get away from the smell of each other.

"Passing wind has long been known to bring improved health and extended life. But exciting research by Dr Wata Pongo in California is following a new scent: intermittent farting."

Not all dietitians are convinced. "This diet stinks," said Dr D Duck. But Dr Mousey is unrepentant:

"What I have learned is that the smell comes in waves which pass. Gas masks solve the difficulty, and in fact the dietary change from rationing was the real reason for their issue in Britain during the war. However I just use a noseclip and keep a few in my pocket to offer to anyone nearby.

"I admit that The Fart Diet can be challenging for personal relationships; after a 45-second expression Minnie kicked me out. However I can honestly say my online friendships have been completely unaffected.

"And there are unexpected advantages. Even on a busy commuter train I am assured of a table to myself, and sometimes an entire carriage.

"The possibilities for energy recycling and self-propulsion are astounding..."

Why not join the growing band who are 'taking the Michael'?

"Although I am more of an old fart myself," says Dr Mousey, "I have found that this diet appeals particularly to those with a puerile imagination."

April Fool's Day arrives a day early!

ihatethecold · 30/03/2013 13:44

hi there everyone, ive just started this woe today.
i just need to lose a few pounds, so ive figured i will try for a month and see what happens

had 2 boiled eggs for brekky, 2 more for lunch and loads of water. will have soup for dinner.

then lovely easter dinner tomorrow [busmile]

GreenEggsAndNichts · 30/03/2013 13:51

'Nadir' science series, indeed. :)

swallowedAfly · 30/03/2013 13:56

food day here but so far just had some scrambled eggs this morning with ds - that is the second time i've felt like breakfast in a week Shock i have literally never eaten breakfast before so i'm kind of shocked with this development.

i have been doing furious cleaning - literally furious as i'm realising cleaning actually does make me angry. scrubbing muddy paw prints of cupboard doors and mopping muddy floors knowing full well it'll all be back again soon seems to make me bubble with rage. i'm hoping the rage element adds to the calorie burn. i know some people 'like' cleaning but i think they must live in houses without grubby little boys and animals so have the satisfaction of knowing it will stay clean or something.

we have to bake cookies soon - my plan is to bake just enough for the easter parcels ds is making for his cousins and for ds to have a few and me just one. still hot homemade cookies are a definite weakness of mine.

i am however very close to pouring a glass of wine. oh and it is snowing here AGAIN!!

forgot to share that i got some uninvited lecture from a bloke at work on how middle aged women look awful when they are skinny and are always really miserable and i shouldn't lose too much weight and if i wanted a man i needed to remember what men like not what i think is best Hmm bizarrely this is a guy who i think had been trying to chat me up on previous occasions. fast track to the curb.

Itsaboatjack · 30/03/2013 15:37

Oh saf he sounds like a catch [bugrin]

It was just snowing here again too!! Glad I got my run in while the sun was still out. I shall also be starting on the wine soon too.

NurseEzzzaChapel · 30/03/2013 16:18

peplum41 the article said the reason that walking 5mph burns more than running was because "walking at very fast speeds forces your body to move in ways it wasn't designed to move. This creates a great deal of internal "friction" and inefficiency, which boosts heart rate, oxygen consumption, and calorie burn." I thought that was interesting too, but there's no way I'd be able to walk that fast. At that speed running is actually easier IMO.

Fast day today. Did a parkrun this morning. I've decided my absolute favourite time to jump on the scales is after the run just before I jump in the shower. I lose 1-2lbs during a run (and put it all back on again when I have something to drink). It's a false reading but it does make me Smile when I see it. Grin

postmanpatseasterbunny · 30/03/2013 16:28

Fasting here and have already burned off more than 500 cals in a gym visit. Nothing to eat so far today and contemplating fasting completely right up until tomorrow morning, am I mad?

peplum41 · 30/03/2013 17:41

isaboatjackthat sounds a good way to lose weight, a run, a prolonged fast, the a low carb breakkie.

ezza dont think my bod is ready to "move in a way in which its not designed" and internal friction sounds painful.

saf the funniest post of the day!! why dont boring male colleagues who like to lecture rember what women like is what matters?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 30/03/2013 18:00

SAF your colleague's comment made me laugh. I'm not surprised that he is/was interested in you- it sounds like just that sort of awkward comment a guy would make if he were interested.

I don't think you're missing out, somehow. :)

BsshBossh · 30/03/2013 18:01

saf what a plonker (the man I mean)!

My impromtu mini fast day today has gone well - will break it for dinner and eat pudding as normal too so not a 500 cal day but I've not eaten anything all day so have cancelled out yesterday's over-eating. Will enjoy tonight's meal and tomorrow then fast as normal on Monday.

mummyof2girlsx · 30/03/2013 18:02

Just a quick post to wish everyone a happy easter [busmile]
Its great to be able to enjoy our chocolates/meals/treats guilt free on this WOL!

swallowedAfly · 30/03/2013 18:06

DEFINITELY not missing out. he's quite good looking but what a shame when they open their mouths.

i did point out to him that i wasn't middle aged, wasn't looking for a man and if he was looking for a woman a good starting point would not be implying they were fat and middle aged Wink several slack jawed female staff were there and one of them finally suck, "it's no wonder you're fucking single mate" Grin

feel like i've been pigging out but realistically not had that much (scrambled eggs this morning, some toast at lunch and some oven baked salmon a while back) and what i'm craving now is a bowl of vegetable soup. i am having some maltesers later though - my easter concession.

everyone enjoy your eating now - most of us have worked hard this week in preparation for it and will focus on rectifying it next week so i'm thinking we should just enjoy now Smile

akarucker · 30/03/2013 18:41

SAF I agree, this woe has enabled us to indulge this weekend, without that old feeling of 'I've blown it so might as well forget it!'. Back to fasting on Monday, but able to really enjoy a guilt free weekend - simple!
