5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thank you virginposter Flowers - now I can do it all! Grin

wildwater · 29/03/2013 18:43

akarucker yes I had medical tests done a couple of months ago.

Before 5:2. my blood pressure was high, my cholesterol was through the roof, and my blood sugar levels were pre-diabetic.

After just two months on 5:2 my blood pressure was normal, cholesterol nearly normal, ditto for blood sugar.

As I have continued 5:2 and in fact have been eating more cleanly all the time, I expect these things to be even better by now - 4 months in.

I have said it before, but most interesting to me is my changed relationship with 'hunger'. I find that when I acknowledge & observe my 'hunger pains' they usually just go away. (A glass of water helps).

Which makes me wonder about all those years of feeling terrified of being hungry. And stuffing anything/everything into my face. Yes, that was me then, and it is a pity to think it was all based around a false emptiness.

Interesting too to muse on when is an eating disorder not an eating disorder? I guess most of us who end up obese are disordered in some way. Plus I know what we're talking about is a serious psychological issue.

In my case, I attended OA for many years and found it amazing - the way people reached out and listened to each other. (There are echoes of this in these threads, often). I also did WW (three times) and JC once, as well as 'losing it' via willpower/not eating also riding a bicycle.

Everything worked, but I always regained the weight, and nothing had ever curbed my desire to overeat before 5:2.

Now, although I sometimes feel quite empty, that no longer makes me think I'm going to die from lack of food grin

Anyway...trying to make a point...I used to believe I had an eating disorder, and maybe I did, but I think I have got over it by now, and certainly 5:2 is working miracles for me.

Thanks to all for encouraging remarks. Yes, my life is about to kick into high speed change and adventure. Rather than check into a retirement village, I'm about to do the adult equivalent of running away with my belongings tied up in a red spotted handkerchief! (Not really, but I have reduced my 'stuff' by a good 3/4, very liberating.)

Forgive this long rave please. It is comforting to know you are all out there. smile

wildwater · 29/03/2013 18:44

whoops - mixing up my asterisks & my square brackets!!!

HopAndEggRoll · 29/03/2013 18:54

Feed day. Had a McDonalds and a greggs [bblush] but I didn't eat them all, I stopped when I was full. I also had 15.5 hours between dinner last night and my first food as I simply wasn't hungry before then.

This weekend will be bad for food and tbh I shouldn't have started this WOE before the end of it (started this week) in the sense it will all be undone but ill be looking forward to fasting next week.

HopAndEggRoll · 29/03/2013 18:55

How do you do the bunny ears?

HopAndEggRoll · 29/03/2013 18:55

[bublush] [bubear]

virginposter · 29/03/2013 19:11

wildwater that's a very interesting post and so positive too. You've come a long way and to the right place. The 5:2ers on this forum are amazing and have such a wealth of knowledge which is why I'm still hooked even though close to target.
Have a happy guilt free Easter everybody [busmile] [bugrin] [buwink] love these bunnies.

Rainbowinthesky · 29/03/2013 19:14

Hi
Need to do something about my weight. Enough is enough. Can someone kindly summarize the diet for me in a few sentences? Thanks.

HotPanda · 29/03/2013 19:42

After the earlier failures this week, I'm pleased to say today has gone well. 23 hours fasted, then dinner of soup with some chicken added in. I'm at 300 calories so far and have saved 200 for some small Easter treats tonight.
Eat days the next 3 then the next fast on Tuesday.

I've lost 1lb this week, so I'm pleased.

summarised as
Think of your food on a weekly basis.
You are not 'depriving' yourself. You are saving your health and balancing.
2 days a week of fasting
2 days a week of trying to stay under your TDEE
2 days a week of trying to stay within 10% of your TDEE
1 day splurge

BsshBossh · 29/03/2013 19:59

Very inspiring post wildwater and I am excited for you as you embark on a new adventure [busmile]

sweetkitty · 29/03/2013 20:30

Very busy day today so not been keeping up.

Had a 19 hour mini fast normal lunch and dinner but found I didn't eat as much as normal, it was pizza night I ate my normal amount of pizza but didn't have sides.

Question : where's the best place to find out your TDEE MFP puts me at 1550 for maintenance?

Rainbowinthesky · 29/03/2013 20:59

Thanks, talkinpeace.

swallowedAfly · 29/03/2013 21:19

i am head hungry and very tempted to go downstairs and get some of the chocolate that is there. am NOT going to. going to listen to a guided meditation and go to sleep.

tomorrow i can eat! and i can do it knowing i've had 3 fast days this week.

virginposter · 29/03/2013 22:59

sweetkitty look in the OP at the beginning of this thread for TDEE.

sweetkitty · 30/03/2013 06:43

Morning all I suppose no one is fasting today so happy Easter Saturday and eating day to you allGrin

My TDEE is 1800 cals which I think is a bit high. I don't do any formal exercise but I'm one of these never sit down people having 4 DCs Confusedam always doing something.

Right this week is get Jillian out again week must do something.

Bramblesinafield · 30/03/2013 07:11

Morning. No, not fasting all weekend. Did ADF last week in prep and will probably do the same next week after Easter weekend as we are off away at the end of the week. Not looking at the scales as I know it will bounce up before it starts to track down again.

Am also considering getting the shred back out.

Someone at work is doing 5:2 and Gillian, I did wonder if she is on here!

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

swallowedAfly · 30/03/2013 07:17

morning. it's funny when someone says stuff that makes you wonder if they're on mn bramble.

well yesterday i fasted and this morning the scales still say 11.1. first time i've done a fast and had the same weight the next day. it's fine though.

plan is not to go mad today - tomorrow is a family eating and drinking day but i won't eat until the family meal and will try to not eat after.

monday back to fasting.

Bramblesinafield · 30/03/2013 07:28

Well done fly. Mine have bounced up a couple of pounds since the ADF - without being too rude, I'm sure it's because I need the loo! Anyone else find that they're more on the constipated side with this woe?

Also wont go mad today, but having a family day out so don't want to limit cals as ill be too tired to enjoy it. Tomorrow is a roast day and mon is family visiting for a meal. I do find I can't eat as much now, but still have to break the habit of eating some junk type snacks because they are there.

mehefin · 30/03/2013 07:59

Hi. I had planned to weigh in on Monday but I'm working crazy shifts over the holiday ( not a problem I don't celebrate easter) so I weighed this morning . Only the 3rd time I've weighed since starting and result is

Jan 28th ---- 13st 12

Feb 25th ---- 13st 3

Mar 30th ---- 12st 10 Smile

And I've done nothing in those 9 weeks that I can't do in the next 9 and on into the future.

I am 5' 7'' in case you were wondering !

Happy holiday to all who are

BetsyVanBell · 30/03/2013 08:03

I'm attempting a fast today - after a couple of eating days with too much bulk and hardly any nutrition I need a day of veg & protein which fast days force me into!

The home made hot cross buns were amazing (still some left but hoping the use of past tense will stop my brain thinking they're available to eat!). But I ate 3 of them. With lashings of butter. While I was eating the 3rd one I was already full and was actually forcing myself to finish it - I should have just put it down and stopped! Fresh baked good are my downfall. However, I didn't then have any dinner so total calorie intake was ok but the wrong things.

Big family lunch tomorrow so today's a good day for a fast, plus I've got loads of cleaning and organising for holiday to do so lots to keep me busy [busmile]

Saf Maintenance is a good outcome though. I spent months last year (pre IF) at 11something just tantalisingly close to the elusive '10'. In a few weeks being 11 will be a distant memory!

Brambles I'll be back on the Jillian after my hols! Someone on the maintainers thread who started up with Shred when I did a few weeks ago (I erm, stopped...) is now saying she's got visible abs and stuff [bushock], I want me some of that!

wildwater Inspiring stuff, thank you for sharing. Brilliant that this WOL has made such a positive difference to a hugely stressful time. Thanks for the sunshine - I can see... snow!

BetsyVanBell · 30/03/2013 08:05

mehefin Stunning result, well done!

BsshBossh · 30/03/2013 08:05

Morning. I completely indulged on Good Friday - probably topped 3000 cals and my TDEE is 2171 cals so today I'll do an extra fast day to counteract yesterday's excesses and anticipate tomorrow's excesses Grin. I should be easy as DH is fasting today too and MIL is looking after DD. I will keep busy by shopping and cleaning the house in preparation for a house full of guests from tonight until Wednesday morning.

Happy Easter everyone and good luck to any fellow fasters today!

Bramblesinafield · 30/03/2013 08:15

Mehefin, wow well done! I've lost 9lbs since the end of jan.

Betsy that certainly is a encouragement. I stopped doing Jillian when I strained my arm. Yes really! But I really should start again, I know there's a good core under the blubber! I feel like I have a waist again and dh is certainly appreciative!

I will take it easy today, but also appreciate that we have to eat fairly normally on non fast days to stop the body going into shut down hang on to fat mode. That's ok by me!

swallowedAfly · 30/03/2013 08:20

brambles - i have been thinking about it and i'm not sure if it is that i am more constipated or that i am far more aware of when i'm backed up and not erm eliminating enough. i know what it feels like to feel light and to feel bunged up. obviously i knew if i was properly constipated before but i think i'm aware of it at a lower level now itms - far more conscious of my digestion maybe.

thanks bvb - i hope so. good luck to you and bssh fasting today Smile

mehefin - fabulous results well done you Smile
