The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm fasting today too, dines. I only started a couple of weeks ago but had my sister last weekend and as you said, easter weekend coming up so just want to keep on to of things.

BsshBossh · 29/03/2013 09:23

dines I'm not doing 3 fasts but I will fast Monday & Thursday next week as usual and throw in a couple of mini fasts (normal dinner only) I think.

akarucker · 29/03/2013 09:48

I have a question! Why, why, why have I got such bad spots since starting this WOE? Everything else is going great, but I look like a teen again. It doesn't make sense because my fast days are filled with plenty of veg and nutrient dense foods, and my eat days are certainly a little better than they used to be.

I've seen several people post about getting spots. Have some of you found that it improves with time? I'm only on week 7, but this is a really horrible side effect.

Prawntoast · 29/03/2013 10:01

Another 3/4lb gone, although I found the fast yesterday difficult, it felt more like a Friday so I really wanted a glass of wine yesterday evening! Had a banana instead, wasn't quite the same though. I'm now the lightest I've been in about 7 years. Next milestone is under 10st, would like to get there by end of April. Have a great Easter weekend

tomorrowweeat · 29/03/2013 10:18

aka - as you lose weight, toxins stored in your fat are released and then got rid of via spots.

swallowedAfly · 29/03/2013 10:19

hello Smile

thanks to those encouraging me with assurances i'll see the 10 something next week. i'm 11.1 today after an eat day (and a few pints of beer which is like bathing yourself in a calorie fest) so i'm ok with that.

doing a fast today. i did end up eating something on wednesday night after all - peanuts of all things. think it was a salt craving and if i'd been more restrained i'd have tried a marmite drink instead but they were under 500cals and are at least a nutritious-ish version of instant gratification.

been a really busy week and like everyone else i'm conscious of easter coming - i've asked people not to buy me chocolate but my mother will ignore that. might just give them to ds - she always buys me those guillian (spelling) truffle shell things which she has it in her head i love (actually don't like really) so should be easy to resist Grin

easter day dinner is roast lamb (i love lamb though it doesn't love me - my stomach can't handle it) and all the trimmings and lots of wine so no doubt hugely calorific but it's just one day and i can make it up. it's the at home for a fortnight with ds that feels more of an issue - find it hard to fast in school holidays. today is my make or break in a way - if i can manage it today i will know it can be done iyswim - if i fail today i will be discouraged. so i guess i better make it through fasting today!

sorry for long post.

well done for the new lows seen by several people i started around the same time as - great to hear! i think i'm 8 weeks in now and 13lbs down. have been a bit plateaued but have to keep faith it will shift soon and it encourages me to see others have had that shift Smile

BetsyVanBell · 29/03/2013 10:25

Good morning! Serious NSV today - I tried on my wedding dress as I'd discussed upthread - fits like a dream though ravages of childbearing on boobs was clearly evident! Hey ho. But even better a Cheongsam Chinese dress that had been altered to fit me when I was at my lowest weight (due to illness) in my early twenties and I've never ever been able to struggle into again went on easily and would need altering to make it fit nicely again. This is a massive revelation to me folks. So apparently I am slim(!!!) but healthy looking (dare I say, radiant at times even) so there's not been any 'erm please don't get any thinner' talk with worried glances.

So it then amused me hugely after all that when I did a weigh in and apparently 2.5 pounds up on yesterday! There's no rhyme or reason to those numbers sometimes folks - don't set too much store by them :)

I'm still jiggly as fuck though - must get back on the Jillian!

aka Did you try the Lush stuff? (Angels on Bare Skin) It's helped my skin a lot. I get regular breakouts on my nose and chin and it seems to stop the zits from developing - clear out the blackheads I suppose.

akarucker · 29/03/2013 10:37

tomorrow so the spots are a good sign? At least that's something! Will they ease up as I lose more weight? I must have a lot of toxins! Haha!

Whitecat · 29/03/2013 10:45

Well done on your clothing victories Bvb that is a great achievement.
A bounce up for me today. This is the first one and would have been demoralising if hadn't read of everyone else's ups and downs on here.
Four more people I know have just started this WOE. It just seems to be gathering steam.

Whitecat · 29/03/2013 11:01

Iwantsomethingsflesh something similar happened to me a couple of years ago. My hair seemed to be coming out in handfuls amongst other things. After a blood test we found my oestrogen was so low it wasn't even on the scale. After discounting menopause they recommended the mini pill and now I'm good as new. Please go see your doctor your hair and periods can indicate do much to them and you would usually have to be starving yourself for your periods to cease.

freerangeeggs · 29/03/2013 11:16

Hi everyone. I'm a lurker, very occasional poster. It's very inspiring to see how much people are losing!

I've worried myself this morning. I always weigh in on a Friday and since starting this WOE the trend has been steadily downwards, ranging from 0.25lbs - 2lbs. I thought that was quite healthy. This week I messed up my first fast day so I tried to make up for it the rest of the week. And I've lost 3lbs! Which is completely unheard of for me and which I'm a bit shocked by. Does this mean I've been eating too little? My body isn't going to start cannibalising my non existent muscles, is it? I've heard you can only lose1.5lbs of fat in a week, but surely that's an average?

Just a bit worried I'm going to bugger up my metabolism I suppose. I'm really hungry ATM (planning big tasty lunch, mind you) and have been so, so tired - but then it has been busy in work.

You'd think I'd be pleased, wouldn't you?! Have other people had big losses and sustained them into the next week?

Itslifejimbutnotasweknowit · 29/03/2013 12:26

Hi folks, just to day feeling very chuffed managed to complete my first fast day at work on 4:3, and still managed to function. Yesterday was a very busy day in the department (I'm a registered nurse and work 10 hour shifts) spent most of the day in theaters and got called away during my lunch break to cannulate patients but finished the day slightly high and not grumpy, will try to continue 4:3 next week.Grin

frenchfancy · 29/03/2013 12:46

freerangeeggs don't worry you sometimes have big losses one week then nothing for the next week or two. Just accept it as one of your bodies mysteries.

Talkinpeace · 29/03/2013 12:52

Long drives without snacks
DH does a LOT of driving and he used to eat a whole malt loaf every morning as he did.
Now he has a Red Bull at the start of each drive : he's wide awake and the caffeine is a hunger suppressant.
Each one lasts about three hours ...

Weighed in this morning and I've put on two pounds.
Which is no surprise at all because yesterday was an honorary Friday so I had pizza and wine. Whereas normally on a Friday morning I'm finishing a fast.

So, for those who are trying to lose weight : a large meal in your digestive tract can add a couple of pounds to your weight and so long as it is not followed by another one, it is NOT in your fat stores.

Not going to fast while on holiday. Will get back on track next term.

virginposter · 29/03/2013 13:25

saf you can do it!
It's just a matter of getting it into your mind set that it will be easy. Perhaps a few affirmations - I can do this, I can do this - will help you.
Is it the thought of being at home that is worrying or the fact that your son will want snacks etc?
I am at home most days and have been since starting this woe and I find that the usual tips help : keep busy, drink lots, try to go out walking etc as much as weather allows and try to keep away from the kitchen.
It is possible to fast even when at home, I'm proof, and not especially strong willed. Smile

Madondogs · 29/03/2013 13:32

Well the week has got a lot better since Monday. I managed my fast thanks to all you lovely people here. On third fast today and feeling great, have lost 2lb this week.
I have to work unexpectedly tomorrow and may fast again, I have never fasted on consecutive days but feel I could do it.

Apart from Easter a lot of events in next few weeks, my birthday, Dsis birthday and Dh birthday( yes April a very expensive month!)

Thanks again to everyone that posts, I find it such a support. Hope everyone has a lovely Easter.[busmile]

BetsyVanBell · 29/03/2013 14:04

Bunny Smileys! [bugrin]

Thanks whitecat It's going to take a while for my mental image of myself to catch up with the reality but, yes, an affirmation like that should help I hope.

I've just eaten a creme egg and I'm baking hot cross buns for the first time - I declare Easter open [busmile]

Creme egg aside I have managed not to buy myself any big easter eggs, dh and I have agreed not to buy each other any so hopefully will be able to keep the sugar cravings in check. If I've got it I will eat it!

swallowedAfly · 29/03/2013 14:32

it's the at home plus son constantly asking for snacks plus school holidays send me slightly stir crazy and tend to lead me to drink more alcohol. so the whole combo really.

am doing ok. have decided to just make it easy for myself today - not worry about having nothing all day long. i've just had a cup of hot marmite and will have another before long. going to try and hold out till 4 and then have some soup and then eat another meal (possibly a ww beef hotpot as i fancy comforty food) before bed.

have just been to the shop to buy mini eggs and buttons and stuff and ingredients for baking. ds is wanting to make cookies and we're going to make little parcels of homemade cookies and sweets for his cousins and tie them with ribbon. i am not baking cookies today though - am not strong enough. i suddenly got the urge in the shop to buy beer and gave myself permission to quit then once i'd given myself permission i decided that no i wouldn't quit i'd carry on Confused

will hang in there.

very lazy day today though so won't be burning much in the way of calories. feel really tired couldn't possibly be hungover and slothful.

thanks for encouragement Smile

Anja1Cam · 29/03/2013 15:22

Just checking in to say hello - well done to today's fasters, I abandoned my plan for one today when the kids started clamouring to make chocolate crispies Easter nests - a tradition at our house [bugrin]. Lightweight home made curry planned for this evening, if I skip the naan as I usually do I should still manage to be well under 2000

So no more fasts for me until Tuesday - then a normal week (at home with the kids though) with 3 fasts planned before a week of visitors. I'll be at work then so I can do fasting days but end them on a restrained normal meal, which might take me over the 500 but I'll still get the big intervals.

Meanwhile I lost only half a pound last week (not surprising, I am fighting my snacking demons still) but did lose another notch off my belt!

Anyway, I really just wanted to post to try out the new smilies [busmile]

ELR · 29/03/2013 15:45

Just catching up on the thread as been unwell yesterday about 4pm I got some kind of bug or food poisoning so been throwing up and on the loo all night, feeling rough as anything but it means that yesterday I only ate about 1300 calories and today so far only 500!
Got weighed and have lost 2lbs I know it's not real but makes me feel better and a now I don't need to worry about over eating too much this Easter. The saying 'every clouds got a silver lining' springs to mind.

aka I've been getting quite a few spots too just put it down to toxins leaving body hopefully it will go soon though as not nice at all.

Good luck everyone hope you all have a fab weekend and just remember to savour every mouthful and eat slowly!

janetxb · 29/03/2013 15:49

I'm fairly new at this, having done 6 fast days in 3 weeks. I'm finding it pretty difficult to get through the day, and I even go over the recommended calories because my TDEE is high and I'm active. Here is my question: Yesterday was a fast day. I ate 732 calories, but burned 630 calories doing my normal daily exercising. Net calories taken in: 102. I have Mosley's book, but haven't read all of it, so I don't know if he addresses this or not. Obviously I'm going to feel quite a lot different at the end of the day than someone who's not exercising. I'd be very interested in any thoughts any of you have about this.

That said, my scale is down a fourth pound this morning, and I am happy to be doing this. [busmile]

I have found these mumsnet threads to be so helpful and encouraging... even though as an American I don't know what you're talking about often when you refer to various foods! Thank you to all of you who have shared your experiences. You're the wind underneath my wings!

Talkinpeace · 29/03/2013 15:52

janet
No leeway for calories burned.
You have to try to only consume 500 calories, regardless of what your TDEE is or how active you are.

If I do a fast day on a Wednesday and I'm not working, I burn around 1000 calories at the gym (swim a mile, do bodypump, do yoga) and still stick to my 500 - hence creating a substantial deficit for the day that is sourced from those flabby bits on my hips Wink

meandmyfour · 29/03/2013 15:57

Hi everyone,
I'm on my first week of fasting and all fine except I'm suffering from the most unbelievable bloating/trapped wind Blush ....is it just me or is that common on this diet? Really hoping it settles down as I look as though I'm about to give birth and bloating isn't normally an issue.

Thanks! X

Itsaboatjack · 29/03/2013 16:17

Afternoon all. I'm fasting again today, 3rd one of the week. Not eaten anything yet but have a cauliflower soup bubbling away on the stove for a little later.

I've just made cupcakes with the dc, and we're going to ice them, with butter icing no less, in a minute so I'll need some strong willpower to wait until tomorrow for one. I'm going out for my sister's birthday tomorrow night so I think I'm going to go and try on some outfits that look so much nicer now I've lost weight so hopefully that should give me a good incentive to stay away from the cakes [busmile]

janetxb · 29/03/2013 16:41
