5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm trying so hard to break my plateau but it won't shift.. I'm gonna have a food filled Easter then fast Tuesday hopefully this may help.. I know I shouldn't get disheartened but can't help it..It just won't shift. I notice people all a see a low even a glimpse occasionally I just don't seem to get that.. I have half a stone to go.....

silverbeetle · 28/03/2013 19:25

64zoolane what about a large bag of carrot sticks?

64zoolane · 28/03/2013 19:37

Silverbeetle - yes! Good thinking. Thanks

BsshBossh · 28/03/2013 20:00

Have just broken my fast (22 hrs) with a bowl of fresh blueberries. I remember reading in Moseley's book his recommendation to break a fast with healthy, clean food so that that is what the body, over time, learns to crave. Will then have a small bowl of chicken chilli (con carne, but have replaced the beef) over lots of steamed broccoli.

We're out tomorrow and DD has requested a pizza lunch. And so an indulgent Easter weekend begins Grin

stickygingerbread · 28/03/2013 20:16

Hello to all fasters old and new. Just checking in to say things are going fine, having begun ADF in the second week of January. Sometimes a fast day fails, but no anxiety, I pick it up again the next time.

I am not weighing, but my clothing is so much looser, it feels great. Had my bp tested last week and it was very good.

The inches seemed to come off my waist first of all. Unfortunately I did not measure beforehand, but once I noticed the change, around beginning of February, I measured. Have lost 3.5 inches off the waist since then. Then that ceased shrinking, but elsewhere seems to begin shrinking.

I hardly ever post, but regularly read for inspiration and information. Thanks for sharing. Fast on!

akarucker · 28/03/2013 20:34

I guarantee that if it wasn't for this board, I would be gaining my usual 5lbs over Easter. As it is, I'm down 10lbs over these past few weeks, and I'm likely to maintain, if not lose, over these next few days. (i have a long way to go, but slow & steady...).

I absolutely couldn't do it without reading all these motivating posts. I read them all, and they're all so helpful, even the ones which show people struggling, because, at times, it is a struggle, and it's nice to know you're not the only one feeling it.

Dotty342kids · 28/03/2013 20:40

headintheclouds - brilliant news on your new low! Go on, tell us what it is Grin
Interested to see the ideas of low cal driving snacks as I'm contemplating a fast day Monday whilst driving my mother, two dogs and two kids up to the Lake District - a good four hr journey. Not sure I can do it on "empty"!

Paintingrainbowskies · 28/03/2013 21:08

Fast day number 12 here and it's been fantastic!

Not sure what's been different but I've breezed through it. Last ate at 9pm last night and haven't eaten again yet but did have a cup of bouillon stock powder when my toddler was eating dinner.

Am going to have my favourite fast dinner of lentil Dahl with an egg poached into it.

I feel great tonight and really full of energy, been for a walk and painting the hall!

It's great because I had a fast about 2 weeks ago they was so hard.

Well done to all the fasters today!

SpiralSkies · 28/03/2013 21:14

Come on Dotty - I'm fasting a 7-hour journey with grumpy bloke and grrrr dog. Might not stick to

Dotty342kids · 28/03/2013 21:22

spiralskies I feel your pain! I am planning jacket potato and salad for tea on arrival but it'll be getting to that point, sane, that'll be the challenge. Not sure I won't want to dive into a bottle of wine as soon as I get there Grin

sweetkitty · 28/03/2013 21:46

Feed day today, I have eaten some toast, 3 small hot cross buns Blush, scrambled eggs, veggie sausage casserole and dumplings which I didn't finish although did pinch 6 chips, it's. Lot less than I would normally eat, I really didn't want carbs at lunch. I'm going to try a mini fast tomorrow, nothing until lunch the a normal dinner.

I agree this thread is amazing so many positive stories.

bugsyburge · 28/03/2013 22:05

ah feed day for me today but it's been a bit of a disaster.... started off with chicken & veg at lunch but since then I've had a whole bag of mini eggs, a wagon wheel & 2packets of lentil crisp Sad Sad , mfp says I'm below 2000 but I'm really disappointed in myself. does anyone else have those days when it doesnt matter how much you eat, you just don't feel full?!

HopAndEggRoll · 28/03/2013 22:29

Fast day today. 2 eggs, 10 grapes for lunch, jacket spud with 150g low fat cottage cheese.

Made the decorations for my ds2 christening on Sunday. Did have a sneaky bit of icing but literally a tiny amount and I would have still been in my calorie allowance.

I still felt a bit not with it today but had so much energy!

BsshBossh · 28/03/2013 23:01

bugsy yes I have those days most when I eat nutrionally poor foods. Not judging you by the way as I eat my fair share of junk but just observing in my own life how less likely I am to binge if I choose clean, healthy, nutrionally dense foods.

Three "eating days" start tomorrow with hot cross buns Grin then pizza, then, I am sure, chocolate Grin.

BsshBossh · 28/03/2013 23:02

*nutritionally

headintheclouds · 28/03/2013 23:48

dotty My new low is...(drum roll..stage left) 10 st 7.5 lbs. im ridiculously excited by this because ive not been that low since 2007( even more ridiculous that I can remember the date, but hey ho...)
It makes my goal of 9 7 seem realistic / achievable .
Enjoy the Lakes.. we live up that way but Im travelling South to my roots tomorrow.Ill give you a wave on the M6 on the way past! x

SummerFin · 29/03/2013 00:22

It was my second week I tried so hard and stayed the same.

I feel like a complete failure and all I've done since is just eat junk food.

Sad
Aftereightsarenolongermine · 29/03/2013 04:07

summer do not give up. Stop eating junk for a start off. Some weeks I lose, some I gain others I plateau, but the overall trend is downward I've lost 3&half stone since August on this WOE. If I can do it anyone can! Try measuring yourself see if there's any change there. Also this WOE has health benefits, concentrate on that instead. Weight loss is an additional benefit not the reason to do this.

Away for weekend now so ill check in next week.

Oh & I haven't lost anything for a few weeks but I'm still fasting. I want those health benefits as much if not more than the weight loss :o

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 29/03/2013 04:09

Also use MFP to log your food. I thought I was doing well at the beginning until I realised I was eating 3000+ on my non fast days Blush
:o

ellenbrody · 29/03/2013 07:03

summer , don't give up, it's too early! I agree with the above, use MFP to log everything you eat on non fast days, you might be surprised. Make nutritionally sound choices as much as possible, plenty of veg and some fruit, drink LOADS of water, especially on fast days. The benefits will come. Keep posting, read these threads for inspiration. I think there are others whose stories are similar, who are now losing.

BsshBossh · 29/03/2013 07:31

3 lbs lost this week. That's 15 lbs in 9 weeks of 5:2 and 61 lbs overall (since Feb 2012).

A bit shocked at the 3 lbs as I over-shot my TDEE a few times this week and couldn't go to the gym as often.

The mysteries of weighloss!

Dotty342kids · 29/03/2013 08:17

headintheclouds and BssBossh that's so brilliant! I think of you two, swallowedafly and itsaboatjack as my 5:2 buddies as you have all been around and chatting on here a similar amount of time to me and I always look out for all your posts so it's lovely to hear about your successes.
Was hoping scales would show a drop into the magic 10 zone today but they havn't. Grrr! Still, I shall carry on and hopefully see it at some point in the not too distant future Grin

dines · 29/03/2013 08:41

Hello all 3rd fast day for me today never usually do 3 but need to do this one today asi have a party on sunday with loads of food and of course easter with loads of chocolate. . Goin to fast next week wednsday and friday. Is anyone else doin 3 fast this week to make up for the easter weekend?

virginposter · 29/03/2013 08:42

summerFin read through some of the back threads and you will see that it's normal for some of us not to lose anything/much in the first couple of weeks then bam! the weight drops. You must be patient and wait without thinking you are a failure. If we all did that at each disappointment on this woe we wouldn't be 1,2 or even 3 stones lighter now.
Forget your first attempt and try again. We all got here through trial and error and a friend of mine really really struggled at first but now she has lost 16lbs and is delighted she stuck with it. So, plan your fast days and try for 500 cals but don't worry if you go over, a lot of us do at first. Try to eat 'normal' portions of healthy food on eating days, and again, don't worry too much at first if the odd thing slips in. Just keep doing this for a couple or three weeks and you should see weight loss, but if you don't still keep at it. There are quite a few on this woe who didn't lose for quite a while but were glad that they stuck with it as now they are seeing losses and are happy.

virginposter · 29/03/2013 08:45

dines yes I am. I did this over Xmas too and only put on 1lb over whole of December so it does work Grin
