5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

My size 12 skinny jeans have just arrived in the post. Going to try them on and see if they fit.........

silverbeetle · 28/03/2013 11:12

Hooray they do Shock, although they are quite stretchy Hmm
Still another milestone for me.

SaltyandSweet · 28/03/2013 11:25

Hello everyone, third fast day of the week today (doing 4:3 usually and did two consecutive this week and this is my last pre-Easter break fast). Doing fine except for major drool and tummy rumble alert when my 4 year old insisted on a croissant from the nearby patisserie this morning. Warm, fresh from the oven, buttery goodness! Though I didn't succumb. Bought one for him and even refused his kind offers to share. Hard though :)

It's cold and rainy in Geneva today and has scuppered my stay-active plan. Am hoping that our Easter holiday doesn't equal a gain. I've lost about 14lbs in 6 weeks (I think it's been 6 weeks?) but things have slowed dramatically down the last 10 days or so. I am not going to weigh in till a week from Monday (skipping Monday weigh in) in the hopes that any gain over the Easter weekend will be negated by behaving next week and the number I eventually see will be a good one. I have a long way to go!

Good luck to my fellow fasters today!

Dotty342kids · 28/03/2013 11:37

Yay silverbeetle that must feel fantastic! I will never, ever wear skinny jeans as no matter what my size, I have very fat knees which need hiding, not clinging to.
But for those of you blessed with thinner knees, bet you look great Grin. Well done!

mrschambers · 28/03/2013 12:09

Blimey!! What a lovely lot you are...I can see I'll be back here regularly! Thanks so much for the words of encouragement and support. You've really made me feel so much better Grin

Just for the record, I do absolutely LOVE this woe, it's been a real revelation to me, as somebody who has obsessively calorie counted over the years. Just to be able to eat without feeling guilty on my 'feed' days is really making a huge difference to my life!

Dotty342kids · 28/03/2013 12:12

Great to hear Mrschambers and yes, everyone is great on these threads. So much support, advice and positive stories to keep you going on the more difficult days.
I'm really enjoying feeling good and am starting to get a few "you're looking good, have you lost weight?" comments from people I know irl so that's always a bonus too.
Even though I've really stalled loss wise the last 3 weeks or so I'm keeping going as I genuinely enjoy this woe. I like not having that accumulated feeling of bloated / stodginess which comes with day after day, after day or "normal" eating. I feel like the fast days help to reset my system a little bit each time and keep my body balanced.

mrschambers · 28/03/2013 12:17

I totally agree Dotty...I can really feel the benefits already and have actually changed shape quite alot, especially in my waist area.

Also, I have always put on weight INCREDIBLY easily, so to think that I have been having, say, a roast on a sunday, maybe the odd pizza, chocs and red wine and (usually) either losing weight or staying the same it's pretty amazing! If I wasn't following this woe I would withought a doubt have put on at least half a stone!

headintheclouds · 28/03/2013 12:52

dotty, mrsc and all, keep plodding on and don't give up. I'm on here from time to time having a moan about stalling weight loss and then I have a WI like today and have reached a new low! Giddy with excitement!its first loss for 2 weeks and if I stay true to pattern it'll now stay that way for 2 weeks. 9 weeks of this and 9lbs lighter . Have a good Easter break xx

silverbeetle · 28/03/2013 13:05

Thanks Dotty I was bursting out of my size 14's at the beginning of Jan, so very very pleased.
I also had a plateau for about 3 weeks but it does start to shift again in the end and as you say it's so nice not to feel bloated and sluggish.

Like you mrschambers I have a tendency to put on weight really easily but this WOL puts me back in control without feeling like I've either failed or missed out. DH is so impressed and he's usually so skeptical about diets, that's he's also doing a version of it. Think he likes the fact that he can still have beer and wine and lose his tummy.

SaltyandSweet well done 14lbs in 6 weeks is fab and a double well done for staying firm and refusing the 'fresh from the oven' croissant - that's will power.
I'm working from home today and can smell the warm hot cross buns in the kitchen, not fasting today so may have one as part of my lunch.

silverbeetle · 28/03/2013 13:10

headintheclouds well done, another example of why we shouldn't get despondent if we don't lose every week - if you stick to it, it will come off in the end Grin

SaltyandSweet · 28/03/2013 13:59

Thanks silverbeetle I am proud of resisting that croissant Grin, small victories and all that! My willpower has been lacking of late, resulting in splurges over two weekends so I hope this is a sign that it's coming back! I'll need it this weekend ... Will restart 4:3 when back home on Tuesday, will have to do another consecutive fast then (Tues, Wed and then Fri) since I find it too hard to fast on weekends!!

It's been said before, and probably once or twice by me too, but I really really appreciate these threads. I devour (no pun intended Smile) each and every word and it all helps me see this WOL in the long term, which helps motivate me every day. So thank you!

Happy Easter everybody

monster54 · 28/03/2013 14:21

Bramblesinafield....

The cramps thing could be dehydration....are you drinking lots?

virginposter · 28/03/2013 14:46

Here's another example of how our bodies are weird with regards to holding on/weight gain. My friend who had lost 14lbs on this woe was very ill with a bad cold last week and told me that some days she hardly ate and others she ate what she felt like (often the wrong things). At her WI she had gained 4lbs and was not happy. We talked and I persuaded her that the weight gain was not real and only transient as her body was obviously upset by her illness.
So she didn't cave in and carried on the next week as per usual and has just phoned to tell me that she has lost 5.5lbs this week which brings her total now to 1st 2lbs (16lbs). She is so chuffed as she has a few stone to lose yet.
I agree with all the others, don't worry about the odd blip, keep going and soon you will see losses.
This woe just gets easier the longer you do it and I too am still amazed at what I can now eat and still lose lbs Grin

postmanpatseasterbunny · 28/03/2013 15:06

virgin that is odd...how soul-destroying to be really ill for a week and still gain weight! As you say, bodies do strange things.

Bramblesinafield · 28/03/2013 15:11

Thanks monster, yes I am and visiting the loo a lot on fast days! Super clean system!

IWantSomethingsFlesh · 28/03/2013 15:13

Unfortunately after 8 weeks on either 5:2 or 3:4 I have had to stop and have had the last couple of weeks off. I stopped because my hair started to fall out and because my periods were not as they normally are. I lost about 4lbs in the end and not enough for me to want to stay on it. I am disappointed as I was really convinced by the programme and book. But as Michael Mosely said himself..."it's not for everyone". Might go back on Slimming world as I lost 2 stone with it prior to this. Not sure yet. Well done to those who it works for.

uckavee · 28/03/2013 15:39

Hi all, this is my first Mumsnet post ever, I have been lurking for a couple of months but have finally watched the Horizon programme and it has really given me the boost to face the 2 week Easter break with renewed resolve. I have lost just over a stone in 8 weeks which is fantastic. I really thought I couldn't do anything to change the slow piling on of the pounds which has been going on for the last 15 years and accelerated since I became menopausal. The change seems to have inspired several friends to give it a try too, at least two of whom have had serious health issues such as the onset of type II diabetes. However, one friend has only lost a couple of pounds so it perhaps doesn't work for everyone. I also love the fact that I haven't got to spend any money on any clubs/books/fitness dvds (yet)... I will probably re-lurk now but want to say these threads inspire me each Monday and Wednesday as I try to focus on keeping under 500... Good luck over the Easter break and all its temptations.

WinnerK · 28/03/2013 16:15

Fast day and still going strong, I must have drunk about 7 herbal teas and several pints of water. Feeling a little hungry but determined to ride it out and get a good 22 hour fast in, then I can eat some nice Easter food over the weekend.

For all the people who have just started and are struggling with the hunger keep going, it does get easier!

ELR · 28/03/2013 16:17

Hi everyone not fasting today but just read all the latest posts. There are some great losses so well done everyone.
Think I will do a mini fast tomorrow as DH has just phoned to say a large Easter egg has been delivered to his office from some clients so he has claimed it for me!!
I weighed in today and have stayed the same which considering my over indulgent weekend and night out on Tuesday it's not too bad, so over all loss is 5.5lb in 5 and a half weeks.
I am a little bit worried about the Easter holidays not so much the Easter weekend but the fact the kids are off for 2.5 weeks so no walking to school, no gym and lots of days out!!
saf really pleased for you that you weighed in at 11.1 I'm sure by next week you will be in the 10's!
dotty I know what you mean about that feeling of stodgy fullness it's so nice to wake up in the morning with that empy slim feeling

Happy Easter everyone!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 28/03/2013 17:06

uckavee welcome to the threads! I'm so glad you've had success with it. Just get stuck in posting when you feel the urge. :) There's lots of support here.

ELR It'll be a tough weekend for many! I'm just lucky they don't have say, Dorito-themed Easter eggs. The chocolate isn't in too much danger from me.

Congratulations on the new jeans silverbeetle!

Hello fellow fasters. Well I am managing to fast with DD at home so it can be done . The next big test will be on Easter Monday when I will try and do a long fast (until dinner) with guests in the house. Watch this space.

wildwater · 28/03/2013 17:48

Hi All. My fast went well yesterday...banana smoothie for 'brunch' and grilled fish with salad later, though I got interrupted and didn't finish it off (cold) until after 8.30pm. Hunger pains are interesting to observe and then move beyond.

Life is moving into top gear. We have sold our business (settling next week) and are in the midst of packing & dismantling our home of five years. We will be 'homeless' over winter, staying with friends & family, until we leave for DH's home country by the end of November. So, enormous changes!

Through this, the 5:2 WOL has been sustaining me. I had been struggling all my life with eating & size. Since discovering 5:2 my compulsion to overeat has been lifted and I feel 'in control' for the first time. I look forward to my fast days (so simple) and I am loving how different my body feels now it's not covered in fat.

Even better than that though is the feeling of vitality & health that has crept up on me. I used to go to bed tired, wake up more tired & aching all over. Now I wake refreshed and don't have to drag myself around. It's so great.

Life iskicking into top gear. Steering this sale & move is the hardest thing I have ever done - but amazingly I am sailing through it all.

Happy Easter (and minimal chocolate!) to everybody. It's still gloriously fine & settled weather here, but promising to change at the end of the long weekend.

More sunshine to all you northern hemisphere fasters!

catsrus · 28/03/2013 18:32

The eating without guilt thing is what I am really getting from this WOE. I was going to fast today - but went for a walk at lunchtime around the city, resisted all sorts of lovely aromas - but caved in and went to Yo Sushi for lunch. Had around 500 cals of good healthy food around 2pm so had done a 'no food' fast of about 17hrs.

Back at the office someone had brought in chocolate and mini bites - I had 2 sq of chocolate and 2 mini bites (one of each flavour). It did not set off a dash to the station sweet shop with that old pattern of 'broken the diet so I might as well pig out'. I'm on the train home and will now have some of my lentil curry when i Get back and a glass or two of Wine. I can fast tomorrow instead Grin. Flexible and guilt free - what more could we ask for!

LaurieFairyCake · 28/03/2013 18:44

I reached a new low yesterday - 13 pounds gone, just one more pound to that magic stone

I attempted a fast Tuesday - didn't make it, managed 900 instead. And I started one today at 9am and gave up at 10 as it was 8 degrees in my house and it was too hard.

So I'm not doing it this week, instead my aim is to keep within my TDEE so I don't put any on - and I feel good about that, I love the flexibility and I love the no guilt.

I'm now enjoying a glass of wine and I ate 3 pizza slices for dinner.

Tomorrow, I have family for lunch and I may attempt a mini fast Saturday - nice, fancy chocolate egg for Sunday

64zoolane · 28/03/2013 18:57

Help! I'm on a fast day and am about to embark on a 3-hour drive. I cannot do it without snacks! Any suggestions for low calorie 'acceptable-ish' snacks that I can get from my large Asda on the way to the motorway? The lower calorie better cos I'm knackered and I really cannot face this drive without some serious conveyor belt troughing. All ideas gratefully received.
