5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

WI This morning; Only lost 300g but a loss is a loss. I only have 1.6kg to go til target. And you know what? I don't really care how long it takes because I have decided I LIKE MY BODY Grin. I feel the need to shout it as I haven't really felt like this since having DCs (DD1 is 13 gulp!).

Miffytastic · 22/03/2013 09:45

WI today for me after second fast of the week yesterday - 7 weeks in, 7lbs lost. 2cm off my waist. Went to zumba the other day and my friend asked what I'd been doing! Smile

Going to aim for another half stone now... fingers crossed that will take me another 7 weeks

ComeTalkToMe · 22/03/2013 09:52

Hi everyone,

Some really impressive losses here - I also wish I had measured myself at the beginning as it seems like sometimes when not losing lbs, people are losing inches.

I thought I would share my good news, 3 weeks in weighed this morning and 7lbs lost Shock, my starting weight was 13st so showed 12st7lb this am. I know this might bounce back up but was really happy to see this as I haven't felt deprived.

Good luck to those fasting today!

wildwater · 22/03/2013 10:06

ELR - I would love to know how to do 'bold' too! ???

katiegirl · 22/03/2013 10:35

Wow well done BsshBossh, you must feel great!

akarucker I've woke up feeling quite peckish on a fasting day as well. I usually just stick to water as I'm not a tea drinker, but I do have some peppermint tea I might try and see if that helps. I've got a list of jobs to do to keep me busy as well.

It's my 3rd fasting day. I'm really glad I don't have any working scales in the house becaus I might have relented this morning, I can really see a difference in my body from a couple of months ago (lost a little bit of weight before starting 5:2 from eating healthily on a trip). I don't want to know my weight though, the times in my life when I've been slimmest and happiest with my body I haven't had a clue what I've weighed.

I'm looking forward to my meal tonight. Going to have sweet potato, puy lentil and feat salad. Yum! I'm going to start doing my exercise DVDs next week.

I'm working nights at the weekend again, have my healthy meals planned to take with me. Vegetable biriyani leftover from during the week on Saturday and daal and rice on Sunday.

WinnerK · 22/03/2013 11:07

Hi everyone!

Fast day yesterday - I was doing so well (didn't eat anything until 8pm when I had a low fat sandwich and lots of fruit) but then I got to my boyfriends and he had pizza and a G&T waiting for me (he didn't realise I was on a fast day, he's not intentionally that evil). Only had one slice and one drink so not bad I guess, and I'm not doing this to lost weight anyway, more for the health benefits.

Woke up this morning feeling great so thought I'd treat myself to a vanilla latte and a pain au chocolat for my train journey - big mistake. Obviously too much sugar and rich food for my body to handle and it went straight through me, got a huge stomach ache now and am now on the peppermint tea and lots and lots of water. So yes, anyone out there just starting out on the 5:2 WOE I would highly recommend a sensible breakfast after a fast day (or any day in fact come to think of it) even if you're craving something naughty. Porridge with banana and a bit of maple syrup or some nice toast and peanut butter is what I'll be sticking to from now on!

Other than that little hiccup I am LOVING this WOE and feel more energised, focussed and happy. Keep at it everyone and all you fasters out there today you can do it!

Daisy1407 · 22/03/2013 11:45

HI all

ITS FRIIIIIDAY YEY!!!!

I need to be good Monday again! but im gonna enjoy the weekend guilt free x

postmanpatscat · 22/03/2013 12:27

Well done all you Friday weighers, some fab results there!

Thai buffet for me tonight (work do for our recent OUTSTANDING Ofsted grade Grin ) and I don't like Thai food so should be easy to keep under TDEE today.

Treacleq · 22/03/2013 12:40

Hi all!

After two fast day this week I have put a pound on :( Gutted but trying to remember it's a long term thing! Second fast day was pretty miserable, massive headache and starving and ended up in bed at 9pm, but have found the fuller for longer soups at M & S which was lovely for lunch at only 240 cals so something I guess - I think I just needed a lot more water.

I need to stop eating pizza! I have had half a takeaway pizza twice this week with my OH - sweets/chocolate not an issue for me as no sweet tooth but I need to shake the takeaways a bit more I think, have managed to avoid the Maccy D's though so I guess that's one thing :)

Well done to everyone - losses are stacking up!

mummyof2girlsx · 22/03/2013 12:52

Struggling with my fast today, kids are off school due to snow and I have had to take the day off work. Think the change of routine has made it harder and I'm soooo hungry!

peplum41 · 22/03/2013 13:04

Hello all, what on earth is the weather like? Finally prised laptop from Dh(he's a retired meteorologist and is obsessed with snow), so lots of new posts to check out. I love a glut of postsSmile
monster54 glad to see you're back on track and now in a position to motivate others,Envy to those damn skinny fellow bridesmaids!

bsshbossh love those stats. Im noting my weight and measurements on the first of each month, but like to hop on the scales daily as I find that motivating.

silverbeetle glad you're still there as I was wondering how your job crisis was working out, plus how 5:2 was helping you to not eat when anxious

Hi sidebar I had about 4 stone to lose when I started 21st feb, I now need to lose just over 3, and will be soon entering the overweight cateogory on the BMI scale, leaving the obese behind forever. My knickers are suddenly comically baggyGrin

Talkinpeace · 22/03/2013 13:06

Hi All,
Weighed in today - with some trepdation having been an utterly half arsed faster this week.
And my weight is exactly what it was last week : 8st 11 = 56kg = BMI of 20.5
Am very, very chuffed because I feel well, I enjoy fasting and I get to enjoy food and drink.
Thank you Dr Moseley.

treacleq
YUP, you need to get the takeaway down to once a fortnight TOPS : those things are laden with hidden salt, fats and sugar. AVOID

Skinidin · 22/03/2013 13:50

Hi.

I'm a very occasional poster on this thread.

Been doing this WOE since early December and I've lost about 22lbs! I say 'about' as I notice there is always a slight fluctuation -I weigh myself daily as I like to know what my body is doing.

I am delighted really, because although I am really really strict with myself and keep to 4/3 most of the time, I have had some megablics (birthdays, trips to London etc) where I have literally gorged.

So keep up the good work everyone!

Only another 3 stones to go for me but I'll get there, and I think I shall keep to this pattern indefinitely.

virginposter · 22/03/2013 13:54

wildwater & ELR under the 'message' box are instructions for bold etc.
Just type then, without a space, the word/s you want bold, followed (again with no space) by Smile

Dotty342kids · 22/03/2013 14:15

ooh I do love logging in and reading lots of nice, positive posts! Well done to all the losers (!) today, that really is brilliant to see.
I've bounced back up to 11st 3 today, after seeing 11st 1 for a couple of days this week.
Rather infuriating but never mind! Two people yesterday commented that I looked really good and had I lost weight Grin so that's fab.
Fasting today and somehow survived a trip to Waitrose to buy Easter eggs, and having to get past the lovely smelling bakery section! I normally cook something nice on fast days but didn't fancy the soup I had planned so bought a low cal Thai ready meal from Waitrose instead. Will look forward to having that when I get in from helping at kids swimming club tonight.

Think I may try a bit of ADF next week as am aware of impending Easter and a week away impending my normal routine so would like to shift a couple of pounds before all of that. So, as have friends over for dinner Sat night might try a fast on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday of next week....

Dotty342kids · 22/03/2013 14:16

Don't know why I wrote "impending" twice! I meant "impending Easter and a week away hampering my normal routine"

Itsaboatjack · 22/03/2013 14:29

Well done to all, some great losses this week. As predicted I bounced straight back up, but then I knew a 4.8lb wl in one week was too good to last. Another week or two though and it'll be back down there properly.

I'm doing a mini fast today, we are having take away pizza tomorrow night so I thought I'd better have a good day today or else my weight will bounce all the way back up and I don't want that.

Hope all those with the snow are doing ok and not too cold today, it's bloody cold and windy down here but at least it's not snowing.

MickPortly · 22/03/2013 15:00

Good morning, all. I am new to this whole thing (one week), and I am enjoying it so far. I've been doing a lot of research on 5:2 and particularly looking for examples of people who have succeeded in the long-term. Every thread I have come across is full of people claiming victory in weeks 1, 2, and 3 (the old-timers).

So, if I may, I'd like to request a round of responses from those of you who've been on this for more than 3 months. Is it sustainable? Are you getting proper nutrition? Have you plateaued? Rebounded? What's yer status, Gladys? Let's hear it! Inspire me! Thanks in advance. And Wine for all! --MP

piemashandliquer · 22/03/2013 15:17

Hi All,

I've been thinking about doing the 5:2 for ages, but scared of not eating! Finally took the plunge and bought Dr Mosley's book today and have read through most of it. I really want to give it a go. I have been having a look at the threads and people say you need to do a stretch of 16 hours without eating. How is this possible if you have breakfast and dinner or lunch and dinner on fast days? I dont get how you would have a straight 16 hour stretch, or am I just being a bit stupid?

swallowedAfly · 22/03/2013 15:46

afternoon Smile

well i am having an eat day. i actually had lunch for the first time in forever because i felt like it and i have since eaten a chocolate eclair. i feel i might end up quite munchy today as i've bought treats for ds and i and a new film to watch this evening and fully intend to have a few glasses of wine.

gut feeling is that's ok. have probably not been mixing up the eat/don't eat business enough and i don't want to start feeling deprived. i will fast again tomorrow and there is also next week and the week after and the week after.....

so today i'm ok with eating cream cakes and the like.

when i fast tomorrow it will be the third of the week so hopefully that's damage limitation if nothing else.

how's everyone doing? will i be the only one fasting tomorrow?

pie if you stopped eating at 7pm tonight and didn't eat anything till 11am tomorrow that would be 16hrs. or 8pm to 12 tomorrow for example.

Dotty342kids · 22/03/2013 15:47

piemashandliquer the general idea is to go as long as possible from bedtime on, say Monday, through to when you first eat on your fast day (in this example, Tuesday!). So if you finish dinner on Monday by 7pm then you'd hit the 16hr time at 11am and could, if you wished, eat something at that point.
The idea is that the longer the period that your body goes without any food on a fast day, the better the health benefits but the main thing is to do it in a way that's achievable for you.
For many people the thought of no breakfast is not too hard, for others it would be a deal breaker. So, if you need breakfast, include whatever you eat in your fast day 500 calorie allowance and look to break the breakfast habit by pushing it an hour or so later each time you do a fast day. Before you know it you'll be at lunchtime so will have achieved 16-17hrs and can then push lunch later and later.
Then, hurrah, the ideal of 24hrs before eating your 500calorie meal will have been achieved!
It sounds impossible when you first think about it but lots of us here can vouch for the fact that it isn't. The key is to drink good amounts of water / herbal tea and keep busy!

frenchfancy · 22/03/2013 16:11

mickportly I'm about 6 months in and have lost about 25lbs (so on ave about 1lb/week) that does include xmas though when I put on about 5 lbs so that makes 30lbs in total. Only 3lbs off target now, but I won't be stopping fasting, it is part of my life now.

Talkinpeace · 22/03/2013 16:21

mickportly
There is a thread I started about maintaining healthy weight - most of us have been doing 5:2 since last summer or early autumn.
Several of us are no longer losing weight because we are lean mean fasting machines who are now JUST looking at the health reasons.
On Dr Mosely's forums - that some of us post on too - there is some REALLY good progress data
www.52fastdiet.co.uk/tracker.php?p=stats
(you'll need an account - my name is the same everywhere)
that lets you look at how different people are doing.

Breadandwine · 22/03/2013 16:30

MickPortly - fasting for over a year - lost 10kg - maintaining since Nov - will be on this WOL for ever! Smile

Oh, and if I was any fitter I'd be dangerous! Grin

piemashandliquer · 22/03/2013 16:56

Thank you Dotty and fly for explaining it to me, I like your idea of pushing breakfast further and further back gradually, I think if its too extreme at the off I'd be less likely to stick with it. I am quite looking forward to getting going. Hoping my hubby will do it too. Im going to make a plan and take our weights, BMI and waist measurements!

I am very impressed by the number of people that have stuck with it, well done!
