5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Oh, I'm on a chocolate rampage! Someone stop me!!!
Today is an eat day. Don't think I'm too much over my TDEE though might just log it all on MFP to check....
But have just had a small bar of Dairy Milk and it seems to have brought out my inner chocolate demon who is now demanding more. Just went and opened one of the kids' Easter eggs but made myself put it back. Am now in lounge, with door shut and a nice roaring fire and I'm not going back in the kitchen till bedtime!
Something about chocolate just sends me on a complete munch fest....

Inlovewithchocolate · 21/03/2013 20:46

A good fast day for me yesterday, so pleased back on track. Feed day today not over indulged
dotty chocolate is my downfall too. I love fruit n nut.. I have just eaten 2 choc digestive biscuits, they were awesome, but hey it's feed day so I'm allowed. Funnily enough I'm looking forward to fasting tomorrow.. Hope weigh in on Saturday is gonna be good news for me.. Everyone is doing so well and posts are so inspiring. These threads are keeping me focused.. Thanks everyone..

BsshBossh · 21/03/2013 20:53

Dotty how about an Options (or similar) hot choc? That helps me when I get a craving for chocolate on fast days. Alternately, on non-fast days, I find a few squares of black chocolate (the good 70%+ stuff) is suffcient. I always want to binge after Cadbury's but never Lindt or Valhrona.

BsshBossh · 21/03/2013 20:55

About to break another very good fasting day. It's my 16th fast and it really is becoming a natural way of life. Made it to 23 hours today. Hurrah!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 21/03/2013 21:15

Lovely day in the peak district with my mum and DS. DS appears to be coming down with chicken pox, though, so lovely day is done. Grin I pushed my usual fast day off til tomorrow so I could enjoy an amazing crayfish sandwich for lunch today.

Congratulations on figuring out how to bold, ELR. :)

Weirdly I hate hot chocolate!! Just polished off last two choc digestives. However, have just worked out today's cals on MFP and am only just over so not going to beat myself up about it.
Fast day tomorrow, much needed I reckon!

BetsyVanBell · 21/03/2013 21:28

greenfig Oh in that case you know what you're in for - there's not that much plank so you could adapt. Was showing my DH my pathetic attempts at a side plank and leg lift efforts - one to avoid I think Hmm. Inner thighs as well as 'buns' have that achey worked out feeling and I'm grimacing every time I sit down - so if that's the effect your after then go for it!!

Appelmoes · 21/03/2013 21:52

Oooh, I don't know if I've done well this week. It was surely not a fast 'by the books', but I've done one 24h, one 16h and now on my 2nd 24h fast. The problem seems to be that I compensate a bit too much on eating days. Not that I eat bags of crisps, but I eat too much (eg crackers with peanut butter and cashew nuts). And Monday I definitely had way too much wine and peanuts. Oops.

On the other hand I've been to the gym twice and walked a lot. I try not to get obsessive about weight, but rather wait 4 weeks to see how I've done. I am also way more focussed on how I look, it really shows on my hips if I gain/lose weight. I gave up smoking recently and gained a bit (about 3/4 kg) and I can tell by the sides of my hips :(.

Thanks everyone for the posts, it helps me not giving up, I will get more in the routine over time, I'm sure! Someone posted a link in this thread or the other 5:2 one about what a certain fat percentage looks like and I found it really motivating (and unfortunately quite accurate ;)). Next week I try to do two more gym sessions and eat a bit better.

Good luck everyone!

Appelmoes · 21/03/2013 21:56

Ah, here you go: www.notahomer.co.uk/2013/03/15/s01se01-special-episode-body-image/

And I bought baked beans and vegetarian sausage as well. I'll get there...

monster54 · 21/03/2013 22:16

Hmmm was a little naughty had some ice cream and a hot choc (highlights)....prob bit over my TDEE but its TOM and doing a top up mini tomorrow!!

swallowedAfly · 22/03/2013 05:59

good morning.

well i fasted yesterday - not very healthily i might add. had a small fruit pack of 48cals just before going into my evening event at six then by the time i got home i was knackered and had a small glass of wine and a bit of dark chocolate. under 500cals but pretty shite use cals Grin

will brave the scales soon. i sneak weighed myself last night just to see what difference a day of fasting made and was loads less than in the morning but what's the betting a load has magically bounced back on in my sleep? we shall see.

swallowedAfly · 22/03/2013 06:30

braved it - 11.00.8 - didn't quite make it this week into the 10's but maybe next week. i just really hope for not bouncing back much and having a decent loss week next week. think i'm due one dammit Wink

ELR · 22/03/2013 06:35

Morning, well done swallowed a loss is a loss!
I fasted yesterday and been awake since 5.30 ish.
Just about go hop on scales will report back in a min.....

ellenbrody · 22/03/2013 06:55

So close swallowed!
I did a mini fast yesterday, where I did 16 hours, then limited myself to 1000 cals - I've tried going longer, but I struggle at work a bit, and I can't afford to be off my game in the afternoon as I teach infant age children, if they sensed weakness!! (Shudders at thought).

I'm hoping this type of mini fast and a more typical 500 cal one on Mondays will maintain my weight, which I'm happy with.

P.S - how do you do bold on an iphone?

Wishihadabs · 22/03/2013 07:08

Realy getting in to this now.2lbs down yesterday (total loss 1.5 kg-about 3lbs in a month). Which is not massive but my BMI was only 22.5 to start with. The most amazing thing is this week I have had ; 2nds of both a particularly delicious lasagna and plum pie at the weekend, curry, a packet of mini eggs and fish and chips yet the scales still registered a loss. Amazing ! Fasted yesterday banana in the morning then innocent veg pot at 4pm. This pattern seems to suit me best.Going out to lunch for dms birthday today :)

Prawntoast · 22/03/2013 07:33

weigh in day today, lost 0.5lbs, lowest so far, is the dreaded plateau about to hit? I don't calorie count on non fast days but I suspect that there has been too much eating of cake this week, so I hopefully just need to reign back a little bit. was also planning on slightly more organised exercise regime at Easter but will bring that forward. Onward and downward (on the scales) everyone!

shoppingbagsundereyes · 22/03/2013 07:50

After only losing 200g last week I've put nearly a kilo back on this week. I don't get it. My weekly calorie intake has been 3000 less than the 1500 a day I'd put as my goal into myfitnesspal. Have been suffering with constipation but it seemed better yesterday so thought weigh in this morning would be ok. Feeling grrrr

akarucker · 22/03/2013 07:56

Oh dear, I've woken up hungry on a fast day. Not an encouraging start...kettle is on to start gulping tea.

monster54 · 22/03/2013 08:06

Weigh in day...had a new low at beginning of week and thought it would bounce but no stayed down. 4.5lbs gone in 4 weeks...it flashed 5lbs but adjusted! Tease!!!!

Anyway pleased with that and the lowest I've been in over 2 years....pushing on for another 9lbs! Then see how I feel when I get there!

Chocupid · 22/03/2013 08:08

Thank god today is not a fast day, heavy snow here in chester, school closed and I'm gonna eat after 3 days of fasting, just grilling bacon, tomatoes and eggs for breakfast (unheard of) I know I'm gonna get stomach ache but I don't care!

Happy fasting on this cold day!

mehefin · 22/03/2013 08:08

akarucker I had a day like that on Monday. Think I didn't eat enough the day before. I took it an hour at a time and made it to 3pm.

Hope your day goes well

BsshBossh · 22/03/2013 08:28

Morning! Lost another 1lb this week. So I've lost 12lbs fasting for 8 weeks. Here are my stats (last year I didn't bother recording stalls or gains - of which there were many; I also didn't used to weigh weekly). Hope my stats inspire you to keep on chugging away. Truly, slow and steady wins the game.

Eating at 10-15% cut of TDEE:
1 Feb 12 - 210lbs
2 June 12 - 196
13 July 12 - 178
7 Sept 12 - 168
10 Jan 13 - 166
25 Jan 13 - 164
Start fasting:
1 Feb 13 - 163
8 Feb13 - 159
15 Feb 13 - 158
22 Feb 13 - 156
1 Mar 13 -156
8 Mar 13 - 155
15 Mar 13 - 153
22 Mar 13 - 152

tomorrowweeat · 22/03/2013 09:01

yea, am feeling great this morning. Really struggled with my fast yesterday - felt so cold and hungry and a bit poor meish! Had to go to bed at 8 pm with a good book and a hot water bottle to stop me giving in and raiding the kitchen! Was lovely actually, all snuggled up and cozy with the wind whistling outside and the rain pounding against the window. Am so pleased I made it as I'm feeling all virtuous and proud of myself now and have 3 days of not having to worry about what I eat. Bring it on!!! Also scales show I am now 12 something (OK ,12.13!) down from starting weight of 13 stone 2 lbs Grin Good luck to all todays fasters and happy weekend to all.

mummyof2girlsx · 22/03/2013 09:16

Schools closed due to snow + dh working away + I am in work in a couple of hours + trying to sort out childcare + fasting today= Sad

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 22/03/2013 09:21

Ok, so thought I would post my weights for the last 3.5 weeks.

Started 27/2 156
4/3 152.2
8/3 149.6
15/3 146.4
22/3 147.2

This weeks slight gain is because I only managed a mini fast on wed, which is usually a full fast and therefore by the time I weigh on a Fri I have 2 fasts under my belt (so to speak)

I have also been measuring inches: have lost 12 inches across entire body, and the most impressive loss is on my 'baby belly' where I have lost 2.5 inches, and 1.5 of waist and bust!

Today is going to be a strict 24 hour fast because I need the control back. This weekend I will be working so it will deffo not be a heavy weekend of eating ;)
