5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

On my second fast day of the week today. Did really well on Monday, went 23hrs without a calorie then had soup and a roll with cottage cheese and salad. I didn't struggle at all, had a little bit of hunger at lunchtime but had a drink and went for a walk and was fine!

Planned another fast yesterday but it was a totally different story! I know by 9 I wasn't going to manage so caved and ate like a pig all day Blush
Starting afresh this morning and feeling quite motivated. I definitely find fasting or just eating healthy far more difficult when I'm not working. When I'm in the house I an constantly looking for the next thing to eat!

BetsyVanBell · 21/03/2013 08:24

There's an article about Robert Lustig from the yesterday's Guardian for those of you who might not know about his work here. If it piques your interest there is a link to his mind blowing lecture on sugar on the tips and links thread, or you can just look him up on you tube. I saw it a year or so ago and it changed my relationship with sugar forever when I was struggling with sugar addiction.

Dotty342kids · 21/03/2013 08:26

sweetkitty I used to be vegetarian and still only eat small amounts of meat. I actually find that most of my fast day meals are vegetarian as you seem to get the most for your cals from those! Often they are curry / chilli based so....... veggie chilli / squash and lentil curry / fish with tomato, chilli and chickpea sauce / stuffed peppers etc etc.
Check out the vegetarian section of BBC Good Food website, you should find lots of recipes coming in at under 500 cals there.

Re. Lustig - of course the good news for us fasters is the positive effects fasting appears to have on our insulin activity.

To those new fasters having weird bowel side effects post-fast, I think it takes 2 or 3 or weeks for your body to adapt to this new WoE. I remember having issues with how I felt after eating on the day after fasting for the first 2 or 3 weeks which have all disappeared now. There are also an awful lot of stomach bugs around at the moment. Sad Oh and if anyone's having trouble with sleep after a fast that's a side effect that seems to have disappeared too, I've been sleeping really well on fast days recently.

BetsyVanBell · 21/03/2013 08:39

greenfig My butt aches this morning! I take that as a good sign that the JIllian is taking effect Wink

monster54 · 21/03/2013 08:58

Interesting article BVB.....I whole heartedly agree with Lustig....very logical and almost obvious argument.

I know with a small baby I am so conscious about what he eats and making sure I check the ingredients etc. Sugar has been accepted as a norm!!

BetsyVanBell · 21/03/2013 09:10

monster plus it packs out the ingredients list on pretty much all 'low fat' item on the supermarket shelf - fat is not the enemy folks! Nor is sugar in moderation of course but we all need to be far more aware of how much is creeping into our diet without us realising. Cook from scratch if you can or scrutinise the labels and don't be fooled by advertising or the packaging blurb.

monster54 · 21/03/2013 09:21

Yes I've read that a lot that the fat is subsitiuted with sugar.....not as good for you as you think hey!

I just think we have too much trust in food companies only highlighted by the meat scandal!

I need to do some more reading on the effect of IF on insulin, understand it a bit better!!

wildwater · 21/03/2013 09:25

My food today: a skim milk & frozen banana smoothie at 12 noon. Was planning to make & eat ramen soup around 4pm, but was overwhelmed by crazy business-related shennanigans so no time. Drank multiple huge glasses of water. After 8.30 this evening I realised I was flagging, so ate one piece of wholegrain toast spread with 2 tsp peanut butter and a little thinly sliced cheddar. An odd day - fairly sure I didn't eat 500 calories - but not hungry.

postmanpatscat · 21/03/2013 10:16

After a bouncy week, I hit a new low this morning and am under 60kg, yippee!

9lbs in four weeks and only 7lbs left to lose :)

And 5:2 is SO easy once you get into it...I agree that the weird bowel issues and weird sleeping are all sorted out now.

NurseEzzzaChapel · 21/03/2013 10:38

TheHumanCatapult, several trips to bathroom after resuming normal eating after a fast is normal for some of us and in my experience this settles down after a while when the digestive system adjusts. Glad it's settled for you postmanpatscat Wink

wildwater, I'm really impressed you managed to stick to your fast on a hectic day. I'm pretty sure one slice of wholemeal and a bit of PB wouldn't have taken you over your 500. You're probably safely under for the day!

akarucker · 21/03/2013 11:02

Yay! Been doing this for 5 weeks today, and lost 10lbs as of this morning (that will bounce up again, but I still count it!!). Really enjoying my eat day today. Love, love, love this WOE. Love it! Did I mention I love it!!

Talkinpeace · 21/03/2013 11:42

Point to ponder :
Upset digestion
It is VERY VERY easy to get dehydrated on a fast day : and of course if you are dehydrated, your digestive system will extract all available moisture, leading to constipation.
Try to keep the fluids up. I have about 6 pints of tea on a fast day and (like many others) go veggie for my 500 calories because veg fills you up.

I'll dig out a couple of links about urine colour etc and put them on the Tips thread (so they don't get lost)
but you should have a poo at least once a day.
Less than twice a week and I'd suggest checking with a doctor TBH.

Urine will smell of what you have been eating (Asparagus is the famous one)
and be coloured by certain foods (beetroot or spinach can be a bit of a shock)
but
until your body settles into its new intake, life may be a bit 'exciting'

greenfig · 21/03/2013 11:48

Ha BVB was going to ask "are your buns killing?"Grin
I did the clip on you tube which I liked. Is there much plank stuff? I can't do much as bad elbows & back. Won't buy it if I can only do bits of it.
wildwater thanks for your sunshine we're desperately in need & v Envy
Super cold here, am baking cakes AGAIN on a fast day & have no oil so no heating. The third time in a row we've run out, have taken this job from dh nowHmm At least I'm hopefully burning up some extra cals to keep warm, not that I feel it!
Encouraging to hear those of you that lost suddenly, its keeping me motivatedSmile Am feeling that maybe this is my stable weight so will take a while to drop this last 7lbs, but it is still early days. Am envious of those of you dines & postmman pat? who also only have a few lbs to shift & are doing so so successfully, but well done youSmile
Had a wierd day yesterday as was not hungry but was still feeling unwell/shattered. Considered making it a fast day but decided to eat to help the lethargy. Had baked beans (got them in thanks to thread!) haven't had in AGES! With lots of brown toast & eggs yum!! Consequently not hungry in evening but had pizza (as everyone else was having). Wierd as not hungry all day yet ate quite a lotConfused
Still feeling chesty but stomach & energy better today, thanks to those askingSmile

tracedw · 21/03/2013 12:00

TIP
Less than twice a week and I'd suggest checking with a doctor TBH.

I am and i have....i have a tendency towards constipation anyway and i know that i dont drink enough water on fast days, mainly builders which i know can be dehydrating....
The doc gave me a months worth of Movicol Hmm ....think i will try water therapy first.

sweetkitty · 21/03/2013 12:08

Thanks for all the advice, I will enjoy making some of the recipes

Greenfig - baking on a fast day must be torture, my whole house smells of cake just now and I always need to have one just to check they are baked right Wink

greenfig · 21/03/2013 12:14

Am feeling strong kitty Wink

dines · 21/03/2013 12:44

Good Afternoon...had to go out and buy a new bra this morning as my boobs have gotten smaller lol. Need to find a way to get this stomach toned. iv ordered davina mccalls exercises dvd.. has anyone tried this before?

IDismyname · 21/03/2013 12:53

I'm in week 3 of this WOE - I posted a while back, but lurk meanwhile. I originally decided I'd only weigh myself once a month, but relented last week (week 2) to discover that I'm 3.5lbs down. My BMI is 29.7 so I need to lose at least a stone (probably more) to get close to being healthier.

Yesterday I fasted (but ate my 500 cals for supper) and felt very euphoric last night before going to bed. I did get to sleep, but felt on a real high.

Does anyone else feel like this?

I am also INCREDIBLY hungry this morning. I've had breakfast (twice) and eaten several biscuits, too. Nothing seems to register when I eat it.

Its very strange.

Any Advice?

AyeAyeCaptainMummy · 21/03/2013 13:14

Hi everyone! I decided to change mt life on monday! I am fed up of being insecure and feeling low because of my weight. I put on 3 stone while I was pregnant (I worked in a restaurant FT so got a lot of grub!) My DD is nearly 3 and iv put another 2 stone on since having her! So at 5'4 I'm 15 stone! I'm pretty ashamed I let it get this bad!

I saw this thread on tuesday so decided to give the 5:2 diet a go! I had my first fast day yesterday and did very well until late in the evening when I munched a pack of WW crisps and WW choccie bar! BUT it was the first fast, ill do better next time! I'm doing my 2nd fast day tomorrow and if it goes well I may try ADF!

I'm really enjoying the feeling of being a tad hungry, its quite empowering to feel in control and chill out about what to eat, when to eat bla bla bla. I really hope this works for me and ill be using this thread as inspiration!!

Wish me luck :)

monster54 · 21/03/2013 13:21

I've heard davina is good dines!!

monster54 · 21/03/2013 13:27

Good luck ayeaye....i'm just 4 weeks in and I fast a Mon and a wed with a mini fast thrown in on a Fri.

I then relax over the weekend. I was thinking about things last night and I've enjoyed the last 3 and a bit weeks. I'm currently at my lowest for over 2 years. But yet I still get to enjoy family occassions etc at the weekend without too much guilt!

I remember the last time I was this weight it involved 2 weeks on the marine commando diet....which although gave the same results in 2 weeks as opposed to 4 it was never sustainable....

I feel like this WOE is for my life now and although I may never get to the weight I was in my twenties if I can still loose say another 9lbs I would have lost a stone and be in a healthy weight bracket and comfortable in the wardrobe of clothes I own!!

NurseEzzzaChapel · 21/03/2013 13:32

Well done AyeAyeCaptainMummy! All the best with it. Do keep coming on these threads and let us know how you're getting on. Smile
