5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

blue2 I'm totally with you! Here's an extract from a piece I'm currently writing for my blog, after going for 38 hours on around 600 cals:

"I?ve just returned from a trip to town with my wife to take MIL for a blood test. It was a cold, blustery, rainy morning, yet I went round town ? parking, bag of veg from the veg shop ? Granny Smith?s ☺ - birthday card from Poundland.(sometimes jogging!) with a huge smile on my face.

I was almost euphoric! "

Anja1Cam · 21/03/2013 14:12

Hello everyone,

I'm still around just a bit busy... Two successful fast days under my belt this week - yesterday I managed to go from 6pm Tue to 6pm Wed, have my 500 cal, then go on to a later breakfast at 10am today. I also went running (only 20mins I'm getting back into it after 4 months off!) this morning at 6am and it felt just fine! hooray Smile

blue2 well done on your fast days and your losses! I can't really comment on the ravenous hunger - mine was really the opposite., However on a feed day I will get hungrier before lunch if I have a cereal-based breakfast (which I love). What did you have for breakfast? Try to eat Veg and protein - eggs are great...

tracedw at the risk of becoming a bore (I've posted on this a few times now) I really recommend psyllium husks for constipation and prevention. This was passed on (excuse the pun) to me by a gastroenterologist and is the same stuff that is in fybogel but without all the additives and is cheaper.
It is a natural plant fibre which can be bought on the net in 1kg bags and lasts for ages. I take 1 heaped teaspoon every day in about 250ml of water and shaken up in a plastic container. I down this in one and then follow it immediately with a large glass of water (very important). Not only does this 'clear any blockages' it also ensures easy, daily bowel movements. I can't recommend it enough (it also makes you feel very full afterwards which is great on a fast day) Wink

Hi everyone, been quite busy (trying to find a new job / sort out job share if I get made redundant) and haven't posted much lately but have been following the thread like an addict Blush

Really heartening to hear people are doing so well. It's also been extremely helpful for the more experienced posters to share their detailed weight loss progress with us 'slow losers'. Flowers

I love this thread, every time I feel like giving up I see a post which reminds me
a) I'm not on my own in feeling a bit disheartened sometimes (weeks STS or 0.2 lb loss)
b) Small losses are quite normal and you just need to keep chipping away at it c) it's a really simple WOE and the health benefits are a great bonus

Fasting today and found a really great find in M&S food- Pot of Country Vegetable Soup (600g) = 180 cals Shock This means half a pot is only 90 cals and even better it's currently buy one get one half price! Great if you're busy. So that's dinner mostly sorted. They also do a really nice Green Soup with peas and beans, think that comes in at 210 cals for a whole pot. Not sure how this compares to the Covent Garden soups as usually make my own?

Haven't eaten yet, hanging on until about 8pm, had a couple of dodgy moments around 12.30 but one glass of cold water and a glass of hot water with fresh lime juice seems to have put a stop to the tummy noises.

Back to the job sites....

Daisy1407 · 21/03/2013 15:10

Hi all
OMG im struggling with the worst heartburn ever!
It started yesterday and last night it was awful still there today however now as bad
Ive had 6 rennie tablets - im hoping these are calorie free? im fasting today see!

Need to get out and buy myself some tea probably a ready meal about 400Kcal and then a hot choc and jelly before bed

is it 5pm yet?

Dines - welldone, your doing fantastic! I havent tried that DVD so let us know what its like - Goodluck x

IDismyname · 21/03/2013 15:20

Bread - I could have just found being 'euphoric' a little earlier in the day!! I usually sleep quite well after a fast, so not sure whats happened.

Anja - I had a very 'good' breakfast of blueberries, half a banana, a dollop of soya yoghurt and a few hazlenuts and pumpkin seeds. It usually does the trick!

silverbeetle · 21/03/2013 16:14

Daisy poor you heartburn's horrible. Have you tried Gavison liquid? Rennies never touch it for me but Gaviscon seems to work. Used to drink it by the bottle when I was pregnant. I don't think it's going to make much difference to your fasting calories what you take so I wouldn't worry.

Hope you get rid of it.

BetsyVanBell · 21/03/2013 16:14

greenfig there is quite a bit of plank stuff and she's pretty hardcore if you've got injuries. You might be better off with yoga or pilates to build up core strength and help sort out problematic elbows & back?

dines I've got davina dvds - I like her routines but her jokes get a bit tedious. I'm currently doing Jillian Michaels dvds (Shred & Killer Buns) at the moment, I love 'em!

shankaron · 21/03/2013 16:31

Hello everyone!
I started the 5:2 diet last Thursday weighing 12 stone at 5'7, after having 2 fast day at 400-500 calories and 5 feast days at 1900-2200 calories, I weighed in this morning at 11 st 10 lbs!!!! As for inches my waist went from 31 inches to 29 inches and hips from 43.5 inches to 42 inches!!
4 lbs and 3.5 inches in a week! Grin Thank you Dr. M! Easiest w.o.e I've ever encountered.
1st 10 lbs to go!
Shan

tracedw · 21/03/2013 16:34

virginposter thanks , i have seen your rec before and have some in the cupboard (bought and forgotten about from the last time you mentioned it), in capsule form, 2-8 tablets once or twice a day, hmm , i may start with 4/once day and see how i go.
For the record i have never ever gone once a day, normal for me is every 2 or 3 days .
Fingers crossed this does the job.

ComeTalkToMe · 21/03/2013 16:54

Hi all,

I usually fast Monday and Thursday since I'm off work on a Wednesday but yesterday decided to take the plunge and go for it. Had a really busy day and actually found it relatively easy which just made me feel even more this WOE is a great choice for me. I've definitely been less hungry today as well which is a Shock for me, I usually have a huge appetite.

silverbeetle I agree it's so motivating to log on here, share with others and this stops me being a bore about this in real life!

Going to do some yoga tonight with hubby Smile, think it will be good but if you knew my hubby he's not really a typical yoga type!!

sausages51 · 21/03/2013 17:22

Hi everyone-just a mini post to offer encouragement. Been doing this WOL since Jan 16th and am I delighted to report I am 13lbs down! This is stunning for me. This has made me sooooo determined to continue, potentially forever, taking in the hidden health benefits. It truly is amazing. Keep going all.:-)

Dotty342kids · 21/03/2013 17:26

Some great posts about brilliant losses, well done to shankaron and sausages - really great to read about!

ELR · 21/03/2013 17:39

Hi all just checking in, fast day today and managed to go until 2.45 so a 18 hour fast could prob have gone longer but knew I wouldn't be back home until 4.30 so thought I better eat. Will try for a longer fast next week.

It's my birthday on Saturday so DH is taking me out for lunch to Jamie's Italian in Covent Garden tomorrow so can't wait I am having starters, mains and dessert! Then Saturday we are going out to dinner at a friends and Tuesday I am going out for a curry with friends usually I would be dreading the guilt of all the over eating but with this WOE it's all good!

I'm having oven baked cod, mashed celeriac and green beans tonight it all comes in at 205 calories, then I will some Greek yogurt and chopped strawberries to follow 50 calories.

What's everyone else having?

Chocupid · 21/03/2013 18:22

Dines I have all Davinas DVDs and really like them, as I have heavy hips and legs Sad and all the squats help keep me toned.

On 3rd consecutive fast today, not intended but i need a different result tbh, am bored now of this plateau, my body seems to like 10st 11lb have been here now for 7 weeks with the odd week showing 10.9 but always bounce back to 10.11. So fed up!

HotPanda · 21/03/2013 19:02

Quick advice please.
Today was meant to be a fast day but I only made 16 and a half hours before eating. Was that enough?
I will also be finishing the day on about 650 calories which is slightly over.
Should this be counted as a mini fast rather than a full on fast?

BetsyVanBell · 21/03/2013 19:05

hotpanda That's a fast! Well done :) I really go beyond 17 hours before my first fast day meal and it suits me fine. I don't calorie count exactly either and I'm sure I go over by 100 cals sometimes. Hope that helps!

HotPanda · 21/03/2013 19:22

Oh really? yay!
That is three done this week - Sunday, Tuesday and today.

Thank you for the quick reply, I was almost ready to eat chocolate but not now, I'm not going to ruin a fast.

frenchfancy · 21/03/2013 19:31

Stick to it Panda you've done really well.

It was an easy fast today. Helped greatly by the fact it has warmed up now spring is hereGrin Still raining thoughSad

greenfig · 21/03/2013 19:35

Thanks bvb I've done shred, 6w6p, NMTZ & BFBM but have to go off piste in placesGrin Want to focus 'down thar' a bit, sorry, thighs esp. inner thighs so thought it could be next on the list.
about to tuck into spiced salmon, mint yog & some indian roasted veggies. Bizzarely still not hungryConfused been easiest fast day yet!

akarucker · 21/03/2013 19:40

Lots of people have mentioned samphire on this thread. I bought some today - what's the tastiest way to cook it? Can you eat it raw?

BsshBossh · 21/03/2013 19:44

Sounds yummy ELR. I'll be breaking my fast with a dinner of dal, rice and veg curry (sweet potatoes & green beans) - small dollops of each to bring me in under 500 cals, then hot choc and 10 cal jelly. I find spicy veg curries just the ticket on fast days.

ELR · 21/03/2013 20:05

Gosh I'm stuffed, I had to leave some and haven't had the yogurt yet saving that for when the kids are in bed with a nice cuppa.
Bssh.. I agree spicy stuff def works.
Greenfig your dinner sounds nice

You should all def try mashed celeriac 350g which is half a large one mashed with some whole grain mustard is only 71calories.

Really felt slimmer today my jeans are starting to get a bit loose on the legs!

ELR · 21/03/2013 20:07

hello

ELR · 21/03/2013 20:07

Sorry just discovered how to do bold
