5:2 Diet Thread: Part Four! Sit down, have a cuppa..

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Ok I got the TOTM but then thought Bread meant ManonBoard was a tongue in cheek poster... So confused!! Blush

An hour away til dinner time and this has been easiest fast so far - thought I'd need a midday snack to get through but it's been fine. Probably because I've been out spending an obscene amount shopping. Will try to do this next fast as well I think.

Tried on some sports bras (all other shopping was strictly for DC) and first time in a while I've seen my body in a full length mirror. My bum and boobs are disappearingSad and now I have the inevitable post-breast feeding boob-hatred. If my saddlebags follow suit it won't be so bad but currently hating my body. Why the hell can't the nice bits stay plump and the fat bits disappear, rather than t'other way round?!?

I also annoyingly lose weight quickly from my face so guarantee by the time the rest of my body catches up I'll look hagard and 20yrs older than I am

Boooooo!

CrackerJackShack · 04/10/2012 06:28

Finished my first official fast day yesterday. Wasn't bad at all. Felt a little hungry when I went to bed, but just went to sleep. Didn't feel hungry this morning at all. I even managed to go for an hours bike ride and a half hour walk yesterday. Grin

Had a hard boiled egg & 0% fat yogurt for breakfast this morning. Thinking of pasta for lunch. Not sure about dinner.

BrigitBigKnickers · 04/10/2012 07:22

6th Fast day finished yesterday-not too bad but I find the afternoons the hardest- once I have had a protein filled tea (prawns and smoked salmon salad yesterday- yum!) I don't feel hungry any more and find the evenings easy to get through- don't wake up feeling particularly hungry either. One of my colleagues said she could see I had lost weight yesterday- that kept me going too! Smile

Still have this horrid taste- wish I could get rid of it- I find myself craving a mint to get rid of it.Sad

One nice soup I have found which I feel quite filling is the Waitrose fresh chicken soup with spinach/ vegetables. Half a large carton is only 136 cals- I find it very satisfying for lunch or tea and it keeps me going for quite a while.

Wishing you all a happy feed/ fast day!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 04/10/2012 07:31

I miss M&S and waitrose etc. would be lovely to treat myself on fast days to some of their lush salads and soups

BananaGio · 04/10/2012 07:40

Fast day today. Had posh chai tea instead of my pg tips to try and make myself feel treated Smile. got soup in the fridge from the other days fast and am going to see how long i can go today before eating. Would be good to get to dinner time. Normally eat at 8 ish but think as dp is out and ds needs an early night will aim for 6 tea. For the first time am feeling the lack of ready meals, cartons of soup etc here in italy. Would prefer not to have to even think of food preparation on a fast day.

BelinaTheChicken · 04/10/2012 08:37

Thelittlestranger I'm the same with the scale, weigh a few times during the day, normally whenever I go to the loo. I want to get new ones though, as they weigh me about 4lbs lighter than my DM's scales, so I'm never sure which is right Confused

Back on track after a few fairly pathetic fasts (never over by more than 300, but felt the enthusiasm dwindling). Yesterday's fast could not have gone better, ate nothing all day, drank only green tea. Nearly managed nothing for dinner at 7.30, but ate 50g of chicken from the DC's dinner Blush at about 4.30. So pleased with myself as DH invited some friends round for dinner, forgetting it was my fast day, but we did fajitas, I stir fried everything in spray oil then only had chicken, vegetables and salad, no wraps. Weighed everything out before I left the kitchen and stuck to it. Even had a few calories left to have half a twix finger, yum.

mommybunny · 04/10/2012 09:30

Have just finished week 3 (I think?) on this WoE, so fasting today. I'm WFH today, which I don't normally do on Thursdays, so I'm going to stick to the plan I had on Monday when I was also WFH: 2-egg omelette with 1 piece of toast at lunchtime, then toast and peanut butter at teatime. Lots of water, and some coffee with splashes of milk (it's either that or sweetener, as I can't go without both). Luckily our au pair will make tea for DCs, so I don't have to be part of it. I should look into some nice filling soups though.

Yeah, Belina, my enthusiasm is dwindling a bit too. Especially since DH doesn't seem to want to do it with me anymore, but I keep trying to tell myself that it's this or WW, and I can't bear the thought of having to watch what I eat every single day for the rest of my life. I'm really into food and cooking (though you wouldn't know it by my popcorn blowouts when DH is away) and this is the only way I can conceive of that I can indulge that won't make me gain weight. When I see links like the one up-thread from the guy who e-mailed his plan to all the experts Michael Mosley consulted on the Horizon programme, I get depressed. I thought the point was to eat normally on the non-fast days and not count calories?

Ah well. Have a good day everyone!

awaywego1 · 04/10/2012 09:32

Brigit-that soup sounds yum

Second fast day of the week, it's gonna be a tough one as I slept badly and have a dodgy tum but am determined to see it through.
Had 2 coffees so far great for the stomach I'm sure Blush planning a slice of ham and a yogurt at 1ish and then 100cal soup and something else later.
My boyfriend said I looked slimmer yesterday which was lurvely Grin not that he gives two hoots either way bless him!
Good luck to all the other fasters and thanks for all the continued posts-really keeping me going Smile

AGeeksWife · 04/10/2012 09:46

Fasting here today, finding it harder than the others already but im sooo tired. BIL rang at 3.20am to say that his baby had been born at 1.30am, obviously good news but to be honest I could have waited a few hours to hear! Nothing jolts you awake like a middle of the night phone call so I couldn't get to sleep for ages afterwards and then up at 5.30 with DS.

I've seen other posts where people have found it harder to fast when tired but I can't really fit another fast day in if I give up today so will just grin and bear it!

Breadandwine · 04/10/2012 10:19

MOB Smile

Good job you didn't call yourself 'Manonourboard'!

About Dr Mosley's weight loss - I know of at least two people who've reported losing a kilo a week.

But we're all different ATEOTD (I know you like acronyms Smile).

For those who are struggling a bit - it's not just about weight loss, it's a whole WOE with health benefits across the board. I've just come across a link between IF and improvements in the condition of gout, for instance.

Keep the faith - and have a biscuit! (Tomorrow, obviously, if you're fasting today.)

ManOnBoard · 04/10/2012 11:03

Just watched the Horizon programme again (thanks for the linK GreenEggs) and Dr Mosley states he has dropped from under 14st to under 13st during the course of filming. This included 3.5 days at 50kcals, an unspecified period of ADF, 5 weeks of 5:2 and a walking holiday in the Pennines, so a reduced calorie/higher exercise regimen and that he also snacks less which would explain the weight loss.

He (and for what it's worth, I) was convinced by the other health benefits and intends to continue with 5:2 but it does strike me that in order to lose weight the old principles of an overall calorie reduction and more exercise still apply.

As I have prviously stated since I began this WOE my eating habits and attitude towards food have changed and I do expect to continue to lose weight. For all of those who suggested not eating breakfast as it awakens your appetite a big thankyou, it is a fast day for me and it is now 11:00am and I have had nothing so far and feel fine

CrackerJackShack · 04/10/2012 11:47

So what's the deal, people do or don't lose weight on this diet? And do we have to count calories on our feast days or don't we?

RightBuggerforGOLD · 04/10/2012 12:07

Manonboard, I'm impressed with the tin opener, do tell us more! My recipes begin with 'take ready meal from freezer...' in fact, even my slimfast is the ready made type, so you're practically Gordon Ramsay to me, haha!

I lost a stone in the first month, and over a stone and a half in total during the whole 8 weeks so far. I was a bit fat though, and it seems to be slowing down a fair bit now, which is a shame as I'd like to lose another stone.

Eating day but I have been invited out to lunch tomorrow. I considered switching days, but I think I'm well over cals today already! Think I'll just make it a small lunch tomorrow then.

Cracker - no you dont have to calorie count on feed days, but it might help if your appetite is still quite big, because you probably wont lose weight on 5:2 if your having far too much for the 5 days. You could just not cal count though, your appetite will naturally decrease after a few weeks intermittent fasting. Xx

mommybunny · 04/10/2012 12:31

Just wolfed down my omelette and toast and I'm a little depressed that's all I can have till around 7 tonight when I have my peanut butter toast. Someone please tell me this wall I seem to have hit in my head will come down! Sad

ManOnBoard · 04/10/2012 12:48

rbfGOLD you will have to come for dinner, you can choose whatever you fancy from the £1 range at Iceland and I will work my magic on it

CJS sorry if I have muddied the waters, I only count calories on fast days (zero so far today) and since I started this WOE I have fasted 17 times, overeaten (BBQs, meals out with starter, main and sweet etc) on 8 occasions and eaten normally on 30 days and have lost a stone of my previous 16.5. The principle, to me, seems simple in that if you were previously eating an average 2000kcals a day - 14,000 a week and on two days a week you have 500 even if you eat 2200 average the other five days this totals 12,000. This may be different for others on here, but I do not think fasting 2 days a week means that you can have gateau and chips for every breakfast, lunch and dinner on the other five unless you "occasionally" choose to.

This WOE is good as you can, if you wish, indulge on anything 5 days a week but as many of the posts on here attest you may find your appetite changing and you will not want to.

CrackerJackShack · 04/10/2012 12:53

I plan on doing 4/3, but I'm not planning on overindulging on my feast days at all...except maybe once a week (Thursday evening the start of the weekend for me! Grin). Mostly I'll probably have a hard time meeting the 2000 calories, given that I've been on WW for 15 weeks or so and I've gotten used to that diet. I was just hoping that doing this would give me the leniency to eat a bit more pasta and have a couple of glasses of wine. As alcohol points on WW are ridiculous.

Alaska77 · 04/10/2012 13:05

Hi All, I joined in last week and have been continuing to read with interest. I particularly like the posts from ManOnBoard and Breadandwine as it's nice to get a bloke's view!

I'm fasting today and haven't had anything so far. I have a bunch of grapes next to me for when the hunger pangs set in. Two-egg omelette for me for dinner tonight.

It's interesting that the conversation is moving towards calorie counting on non-fast days. I try to give myself the freedom to eat whatever I like on non-fast days so that I feel like I have a choice. Like mommybunny said earlier, I can't bear to think of counting calories every day for the rest of my life . Sometimes I find myself horribly overeating on non-fast days and sometimes if I'm busy enough I just grab whatever's going and don't give it too much thought. I think it balances out in the end.

I've been doing this for a few weeks now but I don't weight myself so can't report any great weight losses! My clothes are looser, though, and I always feel better after a fast day. Suprisingly more energy and I sleep better too.

Good luck fellow fasters today x

ManOnBoard · 04/10/2012 13:07

CJS If you read back through the threads, which may take a few days, you will see many who have found that it is the fact that you are denied certain food/drink that actually makes the cravings worse. The fact that you can tell yourself you can have something tomorrow seems to lessen the desire and often when the next day comes you just do not bother. We are all different so find what works for you but for many on here this works for them.
Good luck

TalkinPeace2 · 04/10/2012 13:13

Mousey
re losing weight off your face : there is a whole series of yoga exercise for head and neck that really get the muscles and blood flow working.
One of the simplest is to tip your head RIGHT back then open your mouth as wide as you can, saying aaahhhhh and tipping your head back that extra bit. then close your mouth then bring your chin back down. A few of those and the double chin skin starts to vanish.
Also, from Pilates, lie on the floor and gently turn your head all the way to the side and back - ideally your ear should go flat on the floor...

mommy
cut out the bread on fast days.
omelette and salad
and peanut butter is SO high in fat : go for a MOUNTAIN of steamed fish and veg or soup
you are eating small quantities - the trick is to eat LARGE quantities of low calorie food at the end of the day so your tummy is busy.

cracker
pasta and wine : yup, allowed on non fast days. But in moderation. And after a few weeks you'll crave pasta less (a little bit less anyway)
booze is just SO fattening. DH and I are trying to stick to only drinking two days a week - and we are BOTH sleeping better for it.

Remember - weight loss is a symptom of a healthier body, not the underlying aim of this WOE.

That is why people like me with a BMI of 22 are doing exactly the same diet as everybody else : to improve our blood chemistry and reduce the chance of having to take lots of pills in old age.

catsrus · 04/10/2012 13:30

crackerjack for the first time in years I am eating puddings when out for a meal and not feeling I have to deprive myself. I have lost 11lb so far. my BMI was high normal when I started.

mommybunny tbh I would not survive fast days if I ate what you eat on them! I need either nothing or something substantial.

Some days I only have tea and coffee until I get home and then use most of my calories on one meal. If I'm at home on a fast day I tend to make one large pot of veg soup and just have a bowl or mug full when hungry. Yesterday i was away and supposed to have a working lunch - was planning just coffee or soup but the cafe had a great salad bar so I loaded up with salad and one pot of cottage cheese (no more than 200 cals) which kept me going until I got home and made a veggie stir fry with the superglue calorie free noodles. I didn't keep a calorie count or weigh anything but I'm confident it was under 500 overall - and even if it was a bit over I wouldn't stress about it.

Today is a non fast and I'm out at an event where there's a buffet. I don't have to worry about what options there will be - I will just eat what I feel like eating.

My approach is to relax - this is a long term WOE not a diet.

RightBuggerforGOLD · 04/10/2012 14:09

The £1 range, no less! It's a date! :o

ManOnBoard · 04/10/2012 14:22

Hmmm, if I arrange it on your fast day I can get away with buying pudding too. Going to try TP2's yoga exercise and hoping it works on treble chins too.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 04/10/2012 14:55

Thanks TalkIn, bit my trouble I'm losing weight from my face already, so I look thinner than I am because people see my face is thinner and assume my body's the same. But trying to get to Pilates and Power Yoga once a week, upping swimming and cycling because I think the only way to lose these saddlebags is to exercise them off.

Interesting about energy. It's been a shite week with DD as she has about a million teeth coming through but I've actually been coping really well on the reduced sleep. Much better than DH who a) has had more sleep than me and b) isn't doing 5:2, first time I've had a sign that it means general health is improving.

Friends staying tonight and tomorrow - out for dinner tonight so I'm going to try to act like a thin person and limit what I eat in the day so I can have whatever I like tonight. And tomorrow we're going big gay clubbing so again need to counteract the inevitable Dirty Martinis!

TalkinPeace2 · 04/10/2012 14:58

Mousey
have you tried bodypump? its my secret toning weapon .... light weights ... it works

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 04/10/2012 15:04

No actually. I've joined the YMCA and they have a body pump class - just need to check the times and days to see if it fits around DC schedules! Will give it a go, thanks!
