5:2 Diet Thread: Part Four! Sit down, have a cuppa..

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

"welcome ManOnBoard - good to have a bloke involved, we mentioned we were lacking the other day"

Ahem...

Just got the joke in your name, Manonboard, nice one!

Given that, I have to say, folks, I reckon his tongue was firmly in his cheek with his TOTM comment!

TellMeLater · 03/10/2012 15:17

Fasting today, not too bad - having a coffee while I check out the thread. Will have prawn vindaloo for dinner around 6.00pm.

Thoughts to everyone fasting - hope it's an easy one.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 03/10/2012 16:15

Happy belated birthday to greeneggs too, like you I love cheesecake and have requested for tonight, although heard a rumour brownies were on the cards....all good, and leftovers can be eaten by children or taken into work.

I finally caught up with pages of posts.....boy I only missed a day and there were loads to read

breadandwine, your 75th party sounded great, and the explanation for jagerbomb and 4 hours of dancing a little easier to believe.....like another poster I half wondered if you were yanking our chains, do hope my 75th will be as much fun.

today is an eating day, but feeling horribly bloated, which I don't normally suffer from, had a (b'day) yum yum and 2 satsuma's and fresh oj for breakfast, some tesco sushi for lunch, and 1 coffee, 1 tea and one chamomile tea. yesterday i had a fair amount of carbs (another non fast day, and slightly went off track with about 4 pieces of homemade flapjack,a fresh fruit smoothie 2 small bowls of crunchy nut, tuna/tomato and cheese wholemeal toastie, a slice of marmite and peanut butter on toast and a small bowl of chicken curry...no rice)....ok reading back i am seeing a serious lack of veggies, must endeavour to eat 5 a day, some days I eat nothing but and others pure carbs, and yet more just protein.

anyway,I hope you'll forgive me going totally off topic, but been entertaining me and mine today is an autistic spectrum test.....i have to complete one for my daughter and I managed to find online the adult version with results, so if you are interested it's worth doing. it's certainly thrown up some interesting results (like a disability and inclusion officer who scored a 36 and had no clue he was on the spectrum!) www.piepalace.ca/blog/asperger-test-aq-test/ . my daughter scored a 39 and me a 10, anyone fancy a go?

RightBuggerforGOLD · 03/10/2012 16:23

We're missing a man aren't we? We should have 3 now, but I think Tristan just popped in and never came back. Are we that bad? :o

captainmummy · 03/10/2012 16:35

I bought some shirtaki noodles from amazon - now what shall i do with them? I was thinking of the Nigellissima version of pasta with courgette from last night? Do they stand in well for pasta, or should I be really doing a stir-fry, eastern thing?

And a 100g serving is 10cals!

onyx72 · 03/10/2012 16:40

I have a quick question about fasting days.

Do I fast for 24 hours only? So if my last meal is 9pm on Monday, can I eat again at 9pm on Tuesday or should I wait until the following morning?

captainmummy · 03/10/2012 16:45

Onyx - i fast from about 6pm until 12-1 the next day, have a light lunch then a normal (lightish) dinner .

The next day is normal from breakfst. I couldn' tgo more than 18 hours without something.

awaywego1 · 03/10/2012 17:15

Onyx-on 'normal fasting days' I fast from 7pmish one night until 1pm the following day (excluding drinks) then eat around 500cals until the following morning.

Laska42 · 03/10/2012 18:06

I have two things to report about the Shirataki noodles I made yesterday which I finished this evening (despite it being a food day..)

The first is: Very filling for zero cals Smile

The second is:
Wind !!! Shock

Breadandwine · 03/10/2012 18:20

mocnk I've just had a look at your autistic test - turns out I'm...

"Average male or female computer scientist"

...which throws up some interest questions, don't you agree? Smile

On my fasting days, I've been slowly reducing the amount I have for breakfast and lunch and today I thought I wouldn't have anything to eat until I actually felt hungry.

Well, here we are at 6.20pm and I'm still to feel any hunger pangs. I've had water and two mugs of very nice coffee - and that's it! I'll have my normal (see recipe above) evening meal, but this time I'll have a glass of stout (homemade) before dinner.

Which makes me wonder just how much of our eating habits comes down to just that - habit!

Breadandwine · 03/10/2012 18:25

...interesting questions...

frenchfancy · 03/10/2012 18:47

Best fast day yet. No real discomfort. Just had this for dinner - www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2888/butternut-squash-casserole- it was delicious and very filling. I didn't add the wine which brings it in at 232 cals.

I've still got 40 cals left for the day, that means both fast days this week have come in well under 500 - result :)

Laska42 · 03/10/2012 18:50

momck and bread and wine I just did the test also

Turns out that I'm a man !!!Shock

Sorry.. but that's VERY annoying!!

Hmm just off to shave me beard.....

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 03/10/2012 19:02

I feel like a right numpty re manonboard!

Happy birthday mums!

Fast day today, weds is family dinner day when DH comes home early, so have planned a lush dinner of tuna steak, green beans and quinoa do my fast doesn't affect us all eating together. Leaves me 100cals free to snack if I get starving before then

.z

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 03/10/2012 19:28

Hello, can I join you please? I'm on week 4 (I think) doing 5:2 with DH and have found it easier than I expected. Just recently discovered this thread and have been enjoying reading everyone else's experiences...

Thelittlestranger · 03/10/2012 20:07

Hey Sarah..!

Yep, interesting questions breadandwine...I too, didn't eat until dinner at 530 and didn't feel hungry barely at all. I definitely prefer not eating until dinner I think...

I have had 4 cups of tea and a coffee though..!

I've got enough cals left for a muller rice pudding, and I may have an options hot choc too. Small joys :-)

ManOnBoard · 03/10/2012 20:23

Hello gilrls/ladies/women (never sure what is PC) and the other 2 lost boys

You are right BandW it was tongue in cheek and I know it is really Trick Of The Mind.

I would like to have contributed more but as most of my recipes begin with "Take tin opener from cutlery draw....." you all seem to be miles out of my league.

Where this WOE has been most beneficial to me has been the realisation that just because I feel peckish I do not have to eat and an appreciation of the amount of calories that I was consuming. For instance, whilst watchimg fo--ll I ate two packets of biscuits 2500kcal. Sorry for mentioning the f word but my BH (Better Half) is foll crazy, I watch fo--ll and she goes crazy.

Maybe someone can correct me as I only watched the Horizon programme once and I can only rexall weight loss being mentioned in Dr Mosley's end summary. Also Dr Mosley did not appear to be overweight and to have lost almost a stone after only 5 weeks of 5:2 seems to be far more than anyone else has reported. My own calories are restricted to below 500, in solidarity with my sister, and I have lost under a pound a fast

Thelittlestranger · 03/10/2012 20:32

I can lose up to 3lbs on a fast, but more usually I lose 2lb on the first fast of the week, and 1lb on the second...(but i may have out on a lb in between)

I now realise I was seriously addicted to weighing myself. The scales have only been gone since this morning, but I've gone to step on them at least 3 times since then...anyone else this bad?

frenchfancy · 03/10/2012 20:39

Just found this and I thought I'd share.

poachedeggs · 03/10/2012 20:41

Great day today - an almost effortless fast. Got home to discover DH had made Rocky road.

So that's breakfast for tomorrow sorted Grin

I scored 33 Shock

GreenEggsAndNichts · 03/10/2012 20:45

I did get that manonboard was kidding, I just wanted to let him know I appreciated it. Grin

I thought we had a couple of other stray males around this thread, actually. I think they don't always announce themselves properly Wink.

Anyway, glad to see the new folks around. Welcome sarah!

Wasn't a fast day today, but this neverending cough has me really run down so I wasn't really interested in much. Fasting shall be easy tomorrow. I've just recommended this to a friend, so will be interested if he takes me up on it.

Hi manonboard

You'll have to come back often, couple of decent laughs there. I bet your wife loves your sense of humour!

I've also had my best fasting day yet - here's how it went:

After a complete fast all day I thought I?d look again at my evening meal ? with 600 calories to play with, I could have a pud, couldn?t I?

As a vegan, I?m used to thinking out of the box, so I wondered if I could replace carbs with broccoli? And did I really need the chopped sausage?

SIn the end, my evening meal looked like this:

Pre-dinner drink, 100g stout (homebrew) ? 37 cals
Chili and beans ? 171 cals
100g broccoli ? 31 cals
50g red wine (homebrew) ? 43 cals

(The broccoli substitution was really tasty! And it worked fine without the sausage chunks.)

Total calories so far - 282

So, what to have for a pud? I quite fancied pancake and strawberries - since we had some that were going over and needed using up.

1 small pancake (using 12.5g flour) ? 45 cals
50g strawberries (blitzed in MW) ? 14 cals
5g Benedictine ? 15 cals
20g soya cream ? 38 cals

Total 102 cals

So 282 plus 102 = 384 calories so far today.

Ps. There?s a bar of Green and Black?s chocolate in the cupboard, calling my name?

Skinnyeye · 03/10/2012 22:01

Hi losers normal day for me and still got a cold Sad throat feels better but sneezing has started now. Mad busy day at work tomorrow so am going to try to miss lunch and save calories for dinner. Usually I have some soup but am trying to mix it up a little to keep my metabolism on it's toes. I seem to have hit a plateau with weight loss but definitely feel slimmer and people are commenting so hopefully changing the routine slightly will help me get a few more pounds off.

mommybunny · 03/10/2012 22:03

Just had one of my FAVOURITE dinners while watching my favourite Food Network programme - a huge bowl of salted popcorn! Very naughty but DH is on a business trip and I never do that unless he isn't here (he prefers "proper" dinners [snort]). I'm fasting tomorrow and he is back on Friday, so I snuck it in tonight. I enjoyed every kernel.

ManOnBoard · 03/10/2012 22:04

You're not wrong BandW, it;s a laugh a minute here but she is the funny one, for instance when I asked her if she would join me on this diet she said if she wanted to lose a load of unwanted fat it would be easier to just get a divorce lawyer. I am fairly...nearly....quite sure she was joking
