The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Damn - I thought I was on the recipe thread. I'll post it there as well. Blush

Marking my place

CrackerJackShack · 03/10/2012 06:56

Ok so my first fast day was a failure. Was doing really well till I got home and DH announces he bought my favourite crisps & my favourite bottle of wine. Damn DH. As I have absolutely no willpower if these thing are around I ate & drank them. Blush

So I'm trying again today. Have read the riot act to DH about crisps/wine in the house during my diet days. He's noticeably shamefaced. So today I've just had a hard-boiled egg and a 60 cal yogurt. Tonight will be chicken and roast veg. Fingers crossed for today.

catsrus · 03/10/2012 07:15

Don't worry crackerjack - we've all done that Grin that's why this is so great, it's flexible !

BananaGio · 03/10/2012 07:27

Thanks for advice. Feed day again today and going to do fast tomorrow. Decided on monday and thursday as my fast days as a general rule. Told dp he has to eat at his dads on my fast days for a few weeks until am used to it so I am not tempted!

AncientsOfMuMu · 03/10/2012 09:42

Did my first fast day yesterday and I'm pleased how well it went.

I had just under 600 cals and although I felt quite hungry by the time I went to bed it was a good feeling to have because I knew I'd had a good day. However I did feel very tired this morning. Is this normal after a fasting day?

Crackerjack I had told my DH what I was doing and told him he couldn't open any wine last night Grin To be fair he has said he won't drink on my fasting days which will be a great help.
BananaGio great idea to send your Dp out to eat at his dad's so you're not tempted. I had to cook a meal last night for DH and DS so cooked chilli con carne for them as I can't stand it. Liver and bacon tomorrow!

Thelittlestranger · 03/10/2012 09:51

Thanks for the tip re the scales...they are now in my husband's car way out of my way. I intend to bring them out in a few weeks when I've broken my habit of weighing myself. Hopefully to a gratifying loss...

I'm having my 2nd fast day of the week today, and am planning an intermediate fast on Friday before I go away with the girls for the weekend.

I note how many calories I'm eating on non fast days as it's helping me to learn how many I have a day. Having never counted them before, it's an education...the great thing about MFP is that it then tells me how many calories I'm over or under on a weekly basis. I should be having 1200 per day to lose weight at the moment, so the fast days allow me to have more than that.

Carrot and coriander soup for lunch and chicken stew for dinner. Yum.

Top Of The Morning to you manonboard :-)

GreenEggsAndNichts · 03/10/2012 10:24

Okay littlestranger's post made me scroll back to see manonboard's post, which I'd evidently skimmed over (well, not the whole thing, I'd read all the good parts about the weight loss and moobs! Well done!)

Proper LOL here over Top Of The Morning. Thanks

Eating day today. It'll be nice and relaxed- suspect I'll be making split pea soup this evening. Had a lovely day yesterday, thanks for all the birthday wishes. :)

Morning all - looking forward to a nice feed day before I fast tomorrow. Need to drink more water, which I had been doing last week but have since stalled (might help the cough if nothing else!).

(Sending good fasting vibes to everyone who might need them...)

mumofcrazynamedkids · 03/10/2012 11:07

Morning all, i'm 40 today! eeekkkkkk in work, and not fasting, brought in cakes and satsuma';s for the office and leaving work at 4.30 to go home for a birthday tea being prepped by my kids and a very good friend, followed by more friends joining later for supper, again cooked by very good friends, I'm very lucky, but not looking forward to fast with hangover tomorrow WineWineWine!

thanks beadandwine for the recipe, looks great and I will give it a try as i definitely need some more roughage on this WOE.

also LOL'd at manonboards TOTM guess.

have a great day all, not weighing in til next Friday this week, just no point depressing myself with being 40 and no weight loss!

Aftereightsaremine · 03/10/2012 11:22

Happy birthday mumof! You may find you don't want to eat tomorrow anyway- here's hoping for you.

CrackerJackShack · 03/10/2012 11:37

AncientsOfMuMu , I didn't tell DH I was doing this till I got home last night, so the crisps and wine had already been bought! But he's on board now. Feeling a bit hungry at the moment, but I know it will pass. Drinking some water to stave off the hunger pangs. Grin

RightBuggerforGOLD · 03/10/2012 12:27

TOTM to manonboard, haha! Happy bithday mumof, fab plans, hope you have a lovely evening.

Fasting today, about to choose something easy yummy to eat. Might go for omlette today, hm...

Laska42 · 03/10/2012 12:50

moominandFreddie
zero calorie noodles are shirataki noodles.
you get them on Amazon

Happy birthday mum have a great one.. 40 is fine really (im nearly 55 Shock but still feel 40 most days!)

Eating today .. Smile

LizLemon007 · 03/10/2012 13:22

happy birthday mumofcrazynamedkids!

there is something about this diet in the dm (printed version) today. sorry, should I admit to being in possession of a copy? :-[

mommybunny · 03/10/2012 13:50

Liz, if you actually bought said copy of the DM then I believe the punishment is excommunication Wink. But if you just picked it up on the train, or nicked it from your MIL, that doesn't count.

Seriously though, I'd be curious to read the article. It's strange that it's not on the DM website (or have I missed it in my scroll of the right-hand column among Myleene Klass's dress at the Classic Brits and David Beckham in his knickers?).

LizLemon007 · 03/10/2012 13:54

well, i'm in ireland, so the dm is slightly different here. same old but they might not put all the articles in on the same day. and of course the 'news' is different here. the dm challenges the govt. here. maybe more than some of the irish owned papers. i am not defending the uk dm though. used to live in the uk. i know it's a racist, sexist pile of poo

LizLemon007 · 03/10/2012 13:58

i will tell you what it says later.

ThinkICan · 03/10/2012 13:59

Thanks TellMeLater on clarifying about there being calories in veggies. Was hoping like meggiesmummie that they are zero cal! I've never known the calorific value of anything - time to start I guess!

ThatBintAgain · 03/10/2012 14:01

Hello. Fasted on Monday, which was fine as I was busy but working from home and trying to fast today and am ravenous. Planned on having 2x innocent veg pots today (on offer, no thinking involved) but I'm sooooooo hungry am debating having the second one in a mo...

ThinkICan · 03/10/2012 14:02

Thanks catsrus. I'm hoping just veggies and lentils won't add up to much on a fast day too!

Thelittlestranger · 03/10/2012 14:05

Happy birthday mumof...

Well, I haven't eaten anything yet and just don't feel hungry, so am going to wait until dinner to eat (with the kids at 530) and then allow myself a ipudding with the cals saved from not having soup for lunch...

Sometimes the daily mail in Ireland publishes older articles from the UK version too, so it could have already been in the Uk version.

ThinkICan · 03/10/2012 14:06

To laska and others who have reached a plateau. Found some tips online on breaking out of it. Hope it will help: Plateau-breaking techniques:

?For a short time (two weeks or so) increase your exercise by 20% or more. Consciously cut your calorie intake for about two weeks. Consistently cutting half a serving of one item in your meal can be enough
? Temporarily cut your window duration from five hours to two or three.
? If you?re feeling up to it, extend your fast on one or more occasions by 12-24 hours.
? Try a schedule holiday ? a day or two off of the Fast-5 schedule, then return to your usual schedule.

People holding at a plateau weight have reported having increased hunger just before the weight loss begins, so try to think of increasing hunger as a good thing.

pookey · 03/10/2012 14:11

Happy Birthday Mum of Wine Thanks Biscuit Brew any other emoticons you like... Grin
