The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

BreadandWine that's a great link, thanks. I'm supposed to be training for 545mile bike ride next June!

Blondie276 · 02/10/2012 17:41

Hi all,
Fast today and finding it rather difficult with hunger pangs and feeling wobbly and a bit rubbish! Headache too that seems to be hanging around ( all very doom and gloom!)
On week two and was feeling a bit de motivated after week 1 with having put weight on! Trying to stay focused having read everyone's fantastic losses!
Has anyone else found the first few weeks difficult?! Need some motivation to carry on-help!

Laska42 · 02/10/2012 17:50

well its turned out to be a fast day after all as I got so stuck into my work i didn't notice that i hadn't eaten .. .. and i've just made myself some hot n sour soup with veg a little chicken and those zero cal noodles,, Weird aren't they? just eating it now , so will be interested to see how I feel later ..

I know i keep hammering on boringly about how I wouldn't have done this on 'other' diets - but its true on WW I just obsessed about the ruddy 'points' i could or couldn't have all the time..

btw eating these, has just reminded me about dried bean thread noodles which also were low cal i think (def low carb anyway ) , I used to get them at a local store (yes even here marooned off the south coast ).. i'll go look them up and if they look promising for fast days ill post about them.. They certainly were not £2.50a packet!!

Must go look at that cycling thread as it my only real form of exercise
thanks breadandwine

Laska42 · 02/10/2012 17:56

nope..... mung bean or cellophane noodles 20g = 75 cals.. oh well it has to be the expensive ones Sad

Laska42 · 02/10/2012 18:18

Zero cal noodles seem to be filling though .. i've still got half of my fasting dinner left in the pot ..

ManOnBoard · 02/10/2012 18:29

Hello all, I have followed your progress with interest and have found that your experiences are so similar to my own. My sister and I started this WOE and have managed to do 5:2 for 8 weeks for the health and weight loss benefits. We have both lost weight but attribute this to the overall calorie reduction both on fast days and less appetite on feast? days, starting at 231lbs I have lost 13lbs in 16 fasts. Not wanting to rub it in but it has come primarily off of the moobs, oh joy.
This WOE is so good for flexibility as though I normally fast on Mon and Wed because I had a birthday Monday and dentist today I just changed days. The day after a fast I do try to have a high fibre breakfast and wholemeal toast and a glass of milk for brunch to restore my body's equilibrium
The benefits of all of those clothes at the back of the wardrobe that are becoming wearable again and a 10% reduction in my grocery bill are unexpected bonuses,
May I ask if any of you have experienced any other physical benefits as my skin seems better and a recurring rash on my chest has completely cleared, is this my body beginning to repair itself?
Mever too sure what all of the acronyms mean but as a sensitive male I will assume TOTM is Top Of The Morning iyswim

sarahcrowe · 02/10/2012 18:34

Hi
I started this yesterday and when I had weighed myself this morning, I had lost 2 lbs so not a bad start. I am also doing P90X so I had a protein recovery shake after my workout and don't incude it in my 500 cals as would probably 'bonk'.
My question is the 16 hour gap. Is this no fluids either? Thanks Sarah

Aftereightsaremine · 02/10/2012 18:36

Happy birthday greeneggs! I hope you have a great evening & thoroughly enjoy that cheesecake.

I have to say I love this woe as if you overeat one day you can just fast the next. When I told a skinny friend of mine she just looked at me as if I was mad that I hadn't thought of it before. Must be why she's 8 stone & I was 14&half when I started!

MoomieAndFreddie · 02/10/2012 19:27

Hold on a mo - ZERO cal noodles??

where do you get THESE????

GreenEggsAndNichts · 02/10/2012 19:48

aftereights LOL yes, well all of us who are overweight are always told to just keep on eating small amounts, and often. Skipping meals is always treated as a terrible idea. (my cake was lovely and I'll definitely keep sharing it around until it's out of the house :) I'll have a bit tomorrow and then I'll freeze/hand out the rest)

I LOVE this WOE. DH and I were discussing it (he's been doing it along with me, ever since I mentioned it to him, though he's a normal BMI he wants to lose a few pounds) and he was also going on about how incredibly easy it is to do.

Happy birthday Greeneggs!
Manonboard, someone a while back (sorry, forgot who) said they'd noticed improvement with their rheumatiod arthritis, and (I think) had lowered their meds.
I have also been pulling clothes from the back of the wardrobe, great boost to mental health, if nothing else!
Mommybunny sorry to hear your DH is less enthusiastic, maybe you should show him the above post about moob reduction Wink

Sputnik · 02/10/2012 19:53

Sarahcrowe yes you can and should have fluids.

AncientsOfMuMu · 02/10/2012 20:00

Hi, very new to this as today is my first fasting day.

I understand that it is best not to eat for 16 hours from your last meal on a feast day, i.e. supper at 8pm then nothing to eat until lunch at 12pm the next day, but I'm unsure how long you should leave it before eating again? I've just had some soup and won't have anything more until breakfast tomorrow morning. Is that right?

Also, although I've stuck to drinking herbal tea or water today I was wondering if it was ok to drink this throughout the day or should I restrict it to when I eat?

Aftereightsaremine · 02/10/2012 20:10

Ancients I drink herbal teas & water throughout the day I get a sore throat if I don't. Sputnik it was me that noticed a difference with my RA but meds have remained the same, however now winter is approaching it'll be interesting how I do.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 02/10/2012 20:28

welcome ManOnBoard - good to have a bloke involved, we mentioned we were lacking the other day

just checking in really, hope everyone's doing ok

Skinnyeye · 02/10/2012 20:29

Happy Birthday Green raises Wine hope you have a lovely day Grin feeling much better today now I know yesterday's wobble was TOTM related. Normal day today hence the Wine. Must go shopping tomorrow my trousers nearly fell off today Blush. Seem to be losing more inches than pounds but very happy with that

meggiesmummie · 02/10/2012 20:37

Well I've just about survived the first fast day - harder than I thought but not impossible. Starting to wonder whether I should just not eat anything until the evening. I felt ok until lunchtime but then had some chopped up veg and spent the rest of the afternoon feeling hungry!

The thought that I can have a normal day tomorrow has kept me going although must try not to go overboard I think!

mommybunny · 02/10/2012 20:49

For all my whinging about how awful I've been feeling, I certainly managed to polish off a fair amount of food! Fried chicken and chips for lunch and penne carbonara for dinner. But I have to say I really enjoyed it - it felt so great to have no guilt. I don't really snack much anymore, so I don't worry too much about what I have in my meals. And as DH is traveling I'm not drinking wine - I rarely drink alone.

It's funny, DH doesn't really have much in the way of moobs. So I don't know if that would be an incentive for him Hmm. My own weight loss might.

Good evening ladies (and Man!)!

BananaGio · 02/10/2012 21:03

How much calorie counting should you do on feed days. I have counted today and got to 2100. Should i try to keep that strictly to 2000? I think most times i will not go over, i think i made conscious choices to have lots of bread and cheese and carbonara and a pile of biscuits because i could Smile. hi Sput and thanks for pointing me here!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 02/10/2012 21:22

in all honesty bananagio for me part of the joy of this WOE is I only calorie count 2 days a week, and am really strict about it. Doing this has resulted in a reduction of appetite for me but I'm making a conscious effort not to think about calories on my normal days - otherwise I'll start watching, measuring and monitoring everything!!

awaywego1 · 02/10/2012 21:30

Banana-my thoughts are that it's good to have a rough idea-but I also want to avoid calorie counting really. However I went overboard on eating days last week so am trying to keep an eye on it. Partly because I'm only 5.2 and so my maintenance cals are woefully low ( around 1650) so it's pretty easy to overdo it! Once I've got into a better routine I hope that it will all come a bit more naturally.

catsrus · 02/10/2012 21:47

I find it easier not to eat until the evening of a fast day meggiesmummy for that very reason - so long as I can keep busy. If I'm at work or out and about then that's easy. I find days at home harder so I have a different strategy - for days at home I make a huge pot of soup and just have that for most of the day. By the evening I'm adding curry and all sorts of flavourings to make it more interesting Grin.

Do what works for you - that way you will be able to maintain this as a WOE.

Sputnik · 02/10/2012 22:11

Hi Gio :)
I don't calorie count, I found (and a lot of others here too) after the first few times you begin to self regulate and you feel fuller sooner. I've also stopped snacking, not because I decided to, I just don't feel like it. I also find myself drinking less wine. Occasionally I'll have a big eating day if I feel that way but it's all part of the plan: I'm still losing weight!

I think the beauty of this is that 5 days out of 7 you just don't have to think about all the usual diet stuff.

pookey · 02/10/2012 23:47

Happy birthday greeneggs

TOTM to you Manonboard

bananagio I am calorie counting on my fitness pal for now but I think it's good for me to see that I am going over my maintenance cals by a couple of hundred cals and I guess that is where my problem has been.

Agree with comment about skinny friends, I remember one of my friends would save herself for dinner if she was eating out. I could never understand why she would need to - she's skinny. TMI but I used to get tummy cramps if I went for a long while without eating but that's not happening too much on this woe - I think because the meal I am having on a fast day is so small?

Fast today and under 500 cals woohoo! had planned to drink herbal teas which was a failure but I tried not to go overboard on coffee and had a few glasses of water. Had slow cooker rice, lentils and veg with a slither of feta for my dinner.

I find I am a bit vague when I do the pm school run on a fast day and have a headache now but nothing terrible.

Breadandwine · 03/10/2012 02:40

Mumofcrazynamedkids asked me for this chili non carne (I?m a vegan) recipe:

Basically it?s about 600g of low calorie veg (whatever?s in season, mainly), with added red kidney beans. I have half of this with a diced vegan sausage plus a small baked potato and maybe some broccoli.

In a small pan I simmer 2cms of water (I try and use saved vegetable cooking water) and a teaspoon of chili powder. Then I add, in no particular order, the chopped veg. Here?s what I used for yesterday?s and tomorrow?s fasting days:

155g celery - 12 cals
95g onion ? 31 cals
115g cabbage ? 15 cals
64g carrot -19 cals
100g cauli ? 31 cals
115 mushrooms ? 15 cals
200g red kidney beans ? 200 cals (I cook 500g of dried r-k-beans, then freeze them, so I always have them to hand)
200g tinned tomatoes - 42 cals
10g bouillon powder ? 24 cals
1 teaspoon chili powder - 8 cals
1 teaspoon mixed herbs - 0 cals

Total 400 calories.

I measured this out onto two side plates (I use a side plate instead of a dinner plate these days) and it came to 7 large serving spoons ? but I only used three yesterday, since that filled up the plate.

To this I added a Fry?s vegan sausage, chopped ? 58 cals
I had this with 120g microwaved potato ? 86 cals

And I had it with 50g red wine ? 44

Total 171 (400/7) + 190 = 361 cals

I vary the amount of r-k-beans depending on how many calories I have to play with. This dish works perfectly well with 100g of beans.

You could leave out the beans and sausage and make a perfectly acceptable veg curry ? I would probably fry the curry powder in a teaspoon of oil (16 cals)

I?m always full after this meal ? especially if I have some broccoli with it.
