The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Happy Birthday *GreenEggs"!! Thanks Wine

Bean soup sounds nice, is it on the recipe thread? Must take another look...

And well done don'tcallme, that's amazing. Have you been doing 5:2 or what?

I am eating today and still not feeling 100%.. hopefully will be OK again in time to do next fast day on Thursday. Still not seen any weight loss, but then I've never managed more than 1 fast day a week yet (after failing yesterday...) and also been quite bad on my eating days lately, with loads of chocolate and snacking, so tbh I'm probably doing quite well to stay the same weight. But hopefully that means when I do start managing 5:2, it should have some effect - and at least I know I can hold steady on 6:1, for once I've (hopefully!) lost the weight.

CrackerJackShack · 02/10/2012 10:56

Ok, curiosity is peaked and I've decided to try this out. So far I've lost 8lbs in 14 weeks on WW, but I have 16lbs to go and I find I'm losing my will power (as evidenced by the crisps and glasses of wine I've had the last two nights Blush.

I live in a Muslim country and have had to skip lunches & things during Ramadan before, so I know I can handle fasting.

Today I've had one 0% fat yogurt and I'm planning on having chicken, roast asparagus, garlic and tomato for dinner, should come in at around 400 calories for the day.

Tomorrow I plan on more or less sticking to my weight watchers meal plan (which will be around 1200 calories), but may add in three or four glasses of wine in the evening...is this ok?

Also, what is better for weight loss? The 5:2 or the 4:3?

See, DH and I go for a bike ride 5 days a week, and I don't know if I'll be able to bike on my fast days, cause I tend to feel a bit light headed in the afternoon.... With biking and doing the 5:2 should I be ok?

AncientsOfMuMu · 02/10/2012 11:03

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post yesterday.
I have started with my first fast day and haven't eaten since 7pm last night.

TalkinPeace2 having read through more of the thread I get what you mean about it not being a diet but more of a way of eating. I think the freedom to eat more normally at the weekend will make it easier.

mumofcrazynamedkids I'll do as you suggest and have an early lunch and dinner and then that will allow me to have 16 hours without eating either side of those meals.

GreeneggsandNichts I will do 5:2 (tues, thurs)this week and then 4:3 (mon, wed, fri) next week if all goes well. We have a busy weekend planned and it would be difficult to try and fast on one of those days.

GirlwiththeMouseyHair I will keep in mind your advice about not hitting the coffee and fags before eating Grin

Good luck to everyone else!

LizLemon007 · 02/10/2012 11:47

well, today was supposed to be my second fast day, but it's not..... hmm

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 02/10/2012 11:53

Happy Birthday GreenEggs! Cheesecake sounds amazing, hope you really enjoy it!

I am up with DD and no idea how to get her back to sleep. It's almost 4am and taken 30mins already. Thank god I fasted yesterday and eating today, no way I'm going to have any energy otherwise

mommybunny · 02/10/2012 11:53

Hi all - catching up after a longish absence. Some great progress shown, and welcome to all out new joiners (hope the tales of progress have inspired you!). I have always been posting on fast days but yesterday (a fast day) never quite got round to it. On my fast days I try to go 16 hours before eating lunch (a 2-egg omelette yesterday, with a slice of toast, about 300 cals according to MFP), but then really look forward to another slice of toast with one tablespoon of peanut butter at around 7 (about 209 cals according to MFP, so I went over by 9 cals - I won't worry about it!). I made a bolognese sauce for DH and DCs for their tea (I love how in this country you "eat" tea Smile) and it was hard, but not torturous. I was tempted to weigh myself this morning, as it had been a week since my last weigh-in, but I had promised myself I wouldn't weigh myself for another couple of weeks.

So today's an eating day. I'm hungry but I don't really fancy getting lunch. I still feel really rough from that cold and dry, hacking cough that just will not go away - thinking I should probably see the GP soon (yes, I am such a wimp!).

Also disappointed and frustrated because DH seems to have lost the will to continue with this Sad. He's never been really diligent with it, but he's just gone to Russia for business for the rest of the week and while I can understand that he doesn't want to fast on a business trip, he could have fasted with me yesterday. But he said that because he'll be flying all day today he "needs his energy" so refused to fast yesterday. What the man needs is some freakin' willpower. He needs to lose weight more than I do - his BMI is at least 27, and mine is about 24.5. He's the one who's constantly moaning that he needs to lose weight, and that we drink too much Wine and need to cut it out full stop during the week. I like my Wine but I can work it into a sensible eating plan - I don't need to go cold turkey. In fact, I don't want to go cold turkey on anything - that way lies giving up and reverting back to bad habits. I've learned a lot about moderation over the years (I had none as a teenager, and I was fat for it) and it's helped ensure that although I may overdo it from time to time, I can stay within a healthy BMI and get myself back on track before things get out of control. He's never needed moderation until he hit his 40s, and is struggling with it now.

I'm just hoping that once DH sees my progress, and how "not difficult" it's been for me, it will inspire him to give it another go.

Rant over. Happy fasting/feasting, everyone!

lagartija · 02/10/2012 11:54

me too. Was going to fast today but sooooo shattered from being back at work full time I can't face it today. Have a horrible week this week as well. Weighed myself...no heavier, just sitting at 11st11lbs still.

mommybunny · 02/10/2012 11:54

Oh and Happy Birthday from me GreenEggs!

BigStickBIWI · 02/10/2012 12:07

Thanks Happy birthday, GreenEggs!

Another one here coming down with a cold. Scratchy, peppery throat and headache starting now. Good job today isn't a fast day.

I was completely rubbish last week, on any diet front you care to suggest Blush and I can tell you that two MN meet ups do not mix well with a desire to lose weight or perform well at the gym.

BelinaTheChicken · 02/10/2012 12:07

For the second time yesterday was a slightly failed fast, went to 660 calories. Annoyed with myself, as it was unnecessary picking on a night shift. Only four more nights then I'm back on days, but they are 12 hour shifts, so not sure how I'll cope on those either Confused. The novelty has worn off now though, so it's not as fun making my low calorie meals. But maybe when I'm less exhausted I'll get another bout of enthusiasm.

Definitely want to stick to it though, have noticed a lot of changes, apart from the weightloss I have more energy (I'm knackered, but I've been doing nights with no one to take the DC during the day, so I'm a lot less knackered than I could be!) and feel generally healthier. Part of this could be down to drastically cutting back on coffee and replacing it with green tea, as I used to have 5-6 cups a day and diet coke on top, so far far too much caffeine

AGeeksWife · 02/10/2012 12:20

Happy Birthday GreenEggs!

I'm on week 1, fast day 2 and it's going quite well again I think! Being a bit lazy again and having an innocent veg pot for tea but they fill me up nicely and are easily measurable calorie wise.

Can't wait to weigh, forgot to weigh on Saturday before starting so weighed yesterday and so I am going to wait until next Monday, I was a twice a day weigher previously so it's hard, but probably better for my mental wellbeing!

catsrus · 02/10/2012 12:29

yes, happy birthday greeneggs I love cheesecake so have a big bite for me!

need to convince myself to eat today - not very hungry maybe it's the superglue calorie free noodles still in the system from yesterday's fast day Grin.

Thelittlestranger · 02/10/2012 13:21

Ageekswife, I need to break my habit of weighing every day. I only ever count my official weigh in day on a Friday, but I get depressed when I see I've put on 4lbs (yes 4) in a weekend. I really didn't overdo the calories either and I went to the gym and played squash. Hurrumph.

Eating day today and I've had toast for breakfast, pate on toast for lunch an lasagne for dinner. I'm going to fast again tomorrow too...

To whoever asked, I continue to exercise on fast days and feel fine.

Happy birthday Greeneggs!

TalkinPeace2 · 02/10/2012 13:24

thelittlestranger
Put the scales in the boot of your car, under the cover bit by the spare tyre.
Then you can ONLY check your spare tyre by going out to the spare tyre!!
I do not own a set of scales - I use the scarily accurate ones at the gym once a week.

Happy birthday Greeneggs ....

QuaintIrene · 02/10/2012 13:44

Have bought scales so while I can't tell you what I was before starting the 5:2 on 14 Sept, I know that i have lost some weight ? which is great.

I am trying to keep where possible to the 16 hour fast regime (so, eg, finish eating at 8pm Sunday and fast on Monday, beginning eating at 12 noon). Is this the way other people are counting the hours? Yesterday I felt really quite zoned out with lack of energy, so maybe I need to look at my fast recipes.

dontcallmehon · 02/10/2012 13:44

Hi Laksa- I'm not sure how long I've been doing this - a good couple of months I think. I do exercise sporadically, but I work most evenings, so not as much as I should. I have the odd week where I'll do a couple of spin classes - but it really is this way of eating that has done it for me. I also tend more towards ADF rather than 5:2, although I have the odd lapse on a fast day. I'm really noticing that my appetite has shrunk.

I noticed some of you are getting fed up when the scales stick for a couple of weeks. The same thing happened to me and I thought this wasn't working for me anymore, but the scales are moving downwards again now! It is so easy to follow. I am starting to feel slimmish again now, after struggling with feeling frumpy for so long. I want to lose another 13lb, to take me to 9 stone. I'm 5 foot 7, so don't want to go any lower than that. I think the weight will probably come off very slowly now, as I'm near target, but I'm happy with this way of eating and I think it is sustainable.

Keep at it, it works!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 02/10/2012 13:45

You're going to have weight fluctuations with this woe, especially seeing as one day you'll have only a tiny amount of food going through your system, and another you'll have 3x as much food in your system. I weigh the same day each week, after a fast day, first thing in the morning. I realise this isn't my "real" weight, for those reasons, but it gives me a consistent base for checking my weight loss progress. I'm more interested in the numbers getting smaller than I am interested in the actual number itself, if that makes sense. :)

And thanks for all the birthday wishes everyone. Thanks Grin Shall have some wine later.

Oh and happy birthday, GreenEggs - have a great day!

Thina · 02/10/2012 13:55

O. M. G. It's taken me bloody ages to catch up with you all.... it's as if I am running along at the back - puffing n panting trying to keep up (story of my life lol).

My fast days are CRAP. I need to re-think. I have stopped the diet coke. Now I need to stop the fruit on fast days. I did ok yesterday, kept busy.... but I know I didn't drink enough water and then I realised I had had about 650+ cals. I was blooming starving, I could've eaten the cat's food ha ha!

HOWEVER, as this is a WOE, I am NOT giving up. I will find a way to make the fast days work for me, even if it takes me another couple of months. Grrrrrr.

Thina · 02/10/2012 13:56

and more Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrs.

RightBuggerforGOLD · 02/10/2012 14:33

Happy birthday greeneggs.

Feed day for me, so i will have some cake for you!

frenchfancy · 02/10/2012 15:24

CrackerJackShack if you are going to do 5:2 or ADF then on eating days you need to eat normally (ie your normal maintenance cals - normally 1800-2000) NOT your WW plan. (1200 I think you said). Otherwise you will be having too few calories in a week.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 02/10/2012 15:27

Morning all. Grand total of 3hours of broken sleep last night. Actually feeling fine this morning, will undoubtedly crash and burn later!

Was so looking forward to marmite on toast for breakfast. Forced my way through 1/3 slice and given the rest to DC Sad prob more to do with US bread being shit than anything else - I eat so much less since we moved.

I usually fast on a Tuesday so actually looking forward to having Tina of frozen yoghurt then stuffed pretzels for dinner with DS after his gym and swimming classes - I normally sit there salivating while he scoffs!

Joining the weigh in discussion, I don't own any scales so also weigh weekly at the gym - I don't do proper exercise on a fast day (running after DC is enough!) so inevitably weigh in after a fast day

Good luck fasters today

Alaska77 · 02/10/2012 16:39

Hi All, another fast day for me today. Surprisingly looking forward to my omelette for dinner. Had a wobble around 11.30 and 2.30 but distracted myself by painting my nails! You can stick your hand in a packet of mistrels if your nails are wet! Ha. Later on slathered my hands in very fragrant hand cream so anything I touch (or attempt to eat) smells like the cream. Eurgh. That did the trick.
Have actually been doing really well on a mixture of ADF and 4:3 for the past few weeks but had a slip up this past weekend for no particular reason and now just attempting to get back on the wagon. I love that this is a WOE rather than a diet. Once I get back into the swing of things this week I know I'll feel great again. Previously my days were spend emotionally wrestling with what I should/shouldn't eat but with this WOE you just tell yourself that it's a fast day and that's that. Once I know Idon't have to make decisions about what and when to eat I find that I just get on with my day.
Good luck fasters x

Breadandwine · 02/10/2012 16:43

Thanks for the recipe thread, frenchfancy.

"DH and I go for a bike ride 5 days a week, and I don't know if I'll be able to bike on my fast days, cause I tend to feel a bit light headed in the afternoon.... With biking and doing the 5:2 should I be ok?"

CrackerJackShack Here?s a thread I?ve been watching on Yet Another Cycling Forum. These guys are serious cyclists and the thread is about the 5:2 method and cycling. They all seem to be getting on well with it, so you should be fine.
