The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi everyone, so inspired by all your posts that I have decided to give this a go, first fast day tomorrow.

I've tried a lot of different diets over the years with mixed success but always end up creeping back up to where I started. The thought of fasting a couple of days a week and being able to eat normally (OK, my usual 'normal' with a bit less cake!!) the rest of the time seems a lot more appealing than having to watch the calories/count points every day.

I have a couple of quick questions which I suspect may have been answered elsewhere but haven't had time to read all the threads so hope you won't mind pointing me in the right direction.

  • On fast days do you all count the calories in vegetables or do you count them as zero like other diets - suspect I know the answer to this but thought I'd check

  • On non fast days roughly what calories am I supposed to stick to? I don't really want to have to count calories on non fast days but just need to get a sense of where I should be vs a usual diet calorie allowance which would be 1200 for me.

  • Am I supposed to go a certain number of hours without eating at all? I will probably eat somethign for breakfast as otherwise I tend to feel faint by mid morning and will then eat again in the evening but not sure if that works?

Fingers crossed for a 1 stone lighter me before Xmas!

Laska42 · 01/10/2012 21:19

OK 2 glasses wine(not drunk yet!) and 50g dolcelatte .. that's taken me up to 1500..
But it feels so wrong somehow.....perhaps i've been WW ing for too long...

Sputnik · 01/10/2012 21:26

Just popping in to wave at BananaGio, who I pointed in this direction, see, told you it was easy!
I'm now on my seventh or so week, it's just getting easier and easier, last few fasts I've skipped lunch too and either had a late afternoon snack or gone all the way to dinner time, so I get to have a bigger dinner. I didn't really feel hungry at all today, just sort of emptyish.
It's becoming something I don't really think about any more, just do. Still losing weight too, maybe a bit slower than at the beginning, but that's fine.

TalkinPeace2 · 01/10/2012 21:28

welcome meggies

  • ALL calories are counted (use something like myFitnessPay or FitDay)
  • eating days are best kept to between 1800 and 2000 calories for most people
  • if you can, do a 16 hour no eat session in the 24 hours ; 8pm to noon the next day is the easiest!
  • not only 1 stone lighter, but also healthier ;-)
catsrus · 01/10/2012 21:45

laska the noodles really are quite tasteless - and a bit like a string of dried glue Grin but as a padding and a base they are fine. They are no different, in some ways, to rice noodles - but a more rubbery texture.

Laska42 · 01/10/2012 21:56

Hmm you make them sound so yummy cats ill look forward (!) to them Wednesday.. Hmm

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 01/10/2012 22:37

welcome meggie's

  • yup, count every calorie
  • I don't calorie count on eating days personally, only watch the calories I'm eating if I know it's going to be a big drinking night
  • I try to do 16 hours, window of eating, 16hours

Good luck!

awaywego1 · 01/10/2012 22:44

Wow I've survived today and this evening has been hard going as I had a friend over so I made banana bread. I had an inch piece which I don't think will take me over 500 as I just had 100cal soup for tea. Dreadful headache so time for bed-looking forward to a healthy eating day tommorow!
Well done to all the other fasters Grin

ThinkICan · 02/10/2012 05:42

Any veggies that are forbidden on fast days, except potato? Is it ok - calorie-wise - to have them cooked with some lentils and spices to make a broth?

TellMeLater · 02/10/2012 06:03

You can eat anything you like as long as it's within the calorie limits. If you are trying to cut down on carbs and fast then there's a few more veg apart from potato you should avoid, like carrots, beets, sweet potato.

frenchfancy · 02/10/2012 07:13

I generally avoid potatoes on fast days as I can fill up on other veg easily, but they are not forbidden, nothing is forbidden.

I find spiced food easier on fast days, I'm not a chilli fiend but a bit of tabasco in a tomato soup somehow makes it more filling.

claretandamberforever · 02/10/2012 07:26

Well I've lost a pound of the 1.4lbs I gained over the weekend so am a little bit more relaxed now.

The 4000-odd calories on Saturday came from me having an eating day. I'd gone to Greggs and bought 2 pasties, and had some chocolate and crisps, along with porridge and crumpets for breakfast and that was all fine as it was within my calories.

However we then got lumbered with an impromptu night out so the rest came from alcohol and a kebab! (Blue WKD instead of the dieters friend of vodka and diet coke). There's 200-odd in a bottle of those, and MFP estimated the kebab at 1100 so it was easily done.

Back on an eating day today so will try and stick to 1900.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 02/10/2012 07:49

blimey 1100 in a kebab!!!

about to head to bed - it's almost midnight, been up fiddling around with those online calender things for GP xmas pressies.

Somehow managed to pick on some sugar snap peas around 8pm and not eaten since. Hungry but not massively and definately hovered around the 400kcal mark today.

soooooooooooo looking forward to a chocolate cupcake - we baked them yesterday and I have managed to keep away all day from them

mrsharrycunningham · 02/10/2012 08:24

Hi,

Am dithering as to whether to give this a go. I have the willpower of a gnat, but want to lose as much weight as poss in the next 4 weeks as we are off to a wedding abroad (with a very slim bride!!). I've heard mixed reports as to whether the fasting days can be consecutive - Tuesday and Wednesday would be best for me as hubby not around but would that work? Also, do I just each sensibly on the other 5 days? How much weight do you think I could realistically expect to lose in 4 weeks?

Big thank your for your help!

catsrus · 02/10/2012 08:30

As others have said - nothing forbidden - even on a fast day. Personally I have been losing weight by having jacket potato and salad (with tons of beet root as I love it) as a main meal on fast days - and I don't count calories even on fast days - just stick to plant based meals. I think we all have to find what works for us - depriving myself of potato and beet root on fast days would be a disaster for ne personally so I don't do it Grin

Laska42 · 02/10/2012 08:57

catsrus are you my long lost sister? I'm sure you must be!! Grin

eating day .. I think..

MrsH you can fast two days running but it would be pretty hard going .. im not sure if I remember if anyone here who does it but i'm sure someone else will be along soon .
How much weight of course depends on lots of things .. it seems that if you are in normal BMI already you may not lose so much ( but some have!) ,, I lost 10lbs in 5 weeks but was just over normal BMI when I started ..and I'm now on week seven and haven't lost any more yet. However im very happy with that .. its now a confirmed WOE for me I think, What i like is being able to eat and drink at weekends without too much guilt.

Its also its good to work out your BMR (link above) to discover what you amount you should be aiming for on eating days

catsrus · 02/10/2012 09:09

Well it would be a lost sister laska because the one I grew up with is skinny as a rake - mind you she really does eat like a bird at home, but does then have decent sized meals when she goes out to eat - so I suspect she is "doing this" naturally

To newbies - I was top range of normal BMI when I started and have lost 11lb. Would love to lose another 4-7lb but am happy for that to happen slowly as the loss has slowed right down. Bus as laska says, I'm happy with this as a WOE - I can go out next saturday night and eat and drink with friends and not feel I'm in danger of being on some slippery slope to putting all that weight back on again.

catsrus · 02/10/2012 09:10

Computer weirdness - there were lots of smiley in that message but it hiccuped and theyre gone - insert as desired Grin

dontcallmehon · 02/10/2012 09:28

I haven't posted on here for a while, but have been following with interest. When I started this I weighed 11 stone. This morning (after a fast, but I'm taking it anyway!) I weighed 9 stone 13 pounds! I haven't weighed less than 10 stone for nearly 6 years. I am so happy with the results. I am glad I stuck with it, because there were a couple of weeks when I kept hovering between 10 stone 3 and 10 stone 4 and the scales wouldn't budge.

Laska42 · 02/10/2012 09:42

Whooooo!fantastic news DCMH well doneGrinGrin .. I want to be you !! (oh hang on , didn't I just say I was happy where I was?Confused Blush )

How long have you been doing this ?
Do you do lots of exercise.. I haven't been really , really should do more

GreenEggsAndNichts · 02/10/2012 10:11

dontcallmehon that's great news, congratulations! :)

Today is my birthday, so I've switched days around so that I have today and tomorrow as non-fast days. I fasted yesterday, and will do so again on Thursday. Today, though, I've got a nice cheesecake waiting for me that I baked yesterday. Will share as much as possible with friends so that it's not sitting around all week! (Might freeze a bit as well)

I wouldn't call my veg on fast days boring. I really like certain veg, and if it's cooked right, it's quite tasty and filling. I think all I meant was that I couldn't eat say, smaller portions of foods I really like on fast days, because I would just be left wanting more.

However, I think I'll change my mind on that slightly now that soup season is here. I really like making soups, mostly bean soups (am originally from the US so Southwestern black bean soup is one of my faves), but also veg. I ate a small portion of a split pea soup I'd made on a fast day, then I worried over whether or not I'd gone over calories because I'd liked it so much and it was filling. Confused It was literally the only thing I'd eaten that day.

So that's my next hurdle- incorporating some different foods into fast days without worrying too much.

Greeneggs - Covent Garden Soup of the month is butternut squash and turtle bean - a serving is just 80 calories which is amazingly low...
