5:2 Diet Thread: Part Four! Sit down, have a cuppa..

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Just had supper : A WHOLE tin of Whole Earth baked beans, a trimmed rasher of bacon chopped into it and half a thin slice of toast = 430 calories
leaving my two mugs of tea and my apple earlier makes 500.

Almost the most interesting thing about this way of eating is to discover what you can eat to UTTERLY stuff your face without getting lots of calories, but while getting lots of vitamins and minerals

soups are the best
veggie stews and curries are pretty close
eggs are great for light meals
but baked beans and pulses are a useful one

especially as DH has to be up at 5am tomorrow so needs to sleep well tonight despite it having been a fast day.

Skinnyeye · 01/10/2012 19:10

Hi all not having a good day today. Week 5 fast day 2 and really struggled Sad. I have a stinking cold and been really hungry - much hungrier than usual and not very nice to be around. Cup cakes and biscuits on offer at work but managed to resist then came home and had to watch DP demolishing Chinese take away as I made do with a small portion of lentil curry. Didn't lose any weight last week and feeling sorry for myself and it's too early for bed so in need of some positive vibes from my support group Grin

claretandamberforever · 01/10/2012 19:11

BAH! Messed it up this weekend, had a whopping 4200 calories on Saturday night, followed by 1100 on Sunday, and 770 today which is just a shade over maintenance calories averaged up over three days and I got weighed this morning and had put 1.5lbs on since Friday morning (WAAAAHHHH) so now I'm major paranoid that I'm going to pile all the weight back on again. I am having big trouble sticking to 600 calories on my down days :-(

TalkinPeace2 · 01/10/2012 19:16

clare
go veggie for a week - it will change your diet patterns while keeping your vitamins and minerals up
and I assume a fair few of that 4200 was alcohol : easy to do but NOT good for your liver at that scale. (7 bottles of wine equivalent)

frenchfancy · 01/10/2012 19:16

update just checked out the calories in my home made ratatouille came in 100 cals less than I thought, so I've still got 100 cals to go today :) Actually at the moment I feel fine, but I might have a glass of milk before bed.

skinnyeye positive vibes coming your way. Next time DP tries eating takeaway in front of you on a fast day send him to the shed! (I am going to campagn for all men to have a shed - I think it is important for their wellbeing )

Skinnyeye · 01/10/2012 19:19

Lol French he's a she but I am in agreement about the shed thing!!

RightBuggerforGOLD · 01/10/2012 19:19

Breadandwine, are you serious? I think you are just taking the piss out of us! ;)

Skinny eye, no way! How dare he?! I could never resist a chinese right in front of me, couldnt he have had it tomorrow. Nevermind, you can have something fab tomorrow anyway.

Claret 4200? How did you manage that? Can we have the details?

RightBuggerforGOLD · 01/10/2012 19:23

Oops, crossed posts, how dare *she! And yes, the shed, definately!

Skinnyeye · 01/10/2012 19:23

Thanks losers I knew I could rely on Team 5:2 feeling better already Thanks

TalkinPeace2 · 01/10/2012 19:30

Skinny
can you persuade your DP to try 5:2 as well - as its not about weight loss in the long run - its about having as much energy as breadandwine when we are his age!

Skinnyeye · 01/10/2012 19:36

Nice idea talkin but she already does fasting naturally. She has eating days and not eating days - today is an eating day lol. Most of the recipes I have found make 4 portions I have one and she has the other 3 Envy

Laska42 · 01/10/2012 19:43

eating day today and have had to concentrate on food again ..

so far i've had
omelette with 2 eggs tomato and ham
about 25 almonds
chicken salad . 1 chicken breast ,salad veggies and french dressing
a whole packet of prawns (225g ) with broccoli and teaspoon of spicy laksa paste
a natural yoghurt (2% fat) and 125g blueberries

MFP is making that only just above 1100 cals..!!!!
but I cant eat any more .. i'm stuffed.. but worried that i'm simply not eating enough .......

Dont like cake.. havent any bread..

i've been sort of LCarbing anyway ....but cheese and wine? chocolate?

Dont laugh or raise eyes to ceiling .. I need suggestions

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 01/10/2012 19:46

Big glass of wine!!!

Skinnyeye · 01/10/2012 20:01

Cheese and wine sounds good to me

pookey · 01/10/2012 20:13

Wish I had that problem laska MFP reveals a very unhealthy diet for me and 2500 cals - we could have a supersize superskinny moment ;) Porridge before bed maybe?

Blimey skinnyeye natural fasting, can't she coincide this with your fast days or vice versa?

pookey · 01/10/2012 20:17

TP2 I agree with you on all those filling foods except soup. Really cannot stand soup. Just about tolerate it with lots of crusty bread, which obviously is not the point!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 01/10/2012 20:19

Wine. Cheese. Go for it. :)

pookey · 01/10/2012 20:21

Wow breadandwine was not expecting you to say you are in your seventies!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 01/10/2012 20:23

Liz I do sometimes do a soup with them. I often just steam them and add a tiny bit of butter (by tiny I mean, it doesn't register on my scale which measures in 2gram increments!) and some spice.

I know it's boring but I try not to make my fast day food too tasty, because I'll just want a lot more. :) I like veg so it doesn't bother me. I probably need to look into more soups. I love making pea soup. I could do with a recipe for a veg soup.

Hand blenders are also your friend if you want to make a small portion of a soup. I use them for my split pea and black bean soups. Saves faffing with a blender.

it must be very frustrating to have a dp who manages their weight well skinnyeye Envy my exDh at least had the plus of putting on weight as easily as me Wink

For those stressing about putting on weight and falling off the fasting wagon Smile I had a bad weekend food wise too - in that I appear to have put on weight and I aborted a fast day yesterday - but I'm not worried in the slightest Grin. Experience has shown me over these last couple of months that this happens - and it's OK, you just need to go with it. If you are feeling ill or hungover then eat, fast another day, it will be fine.

Today I was on work-related training day so had planned to have a non fast day (the venue has fab lunches) but to fit my fast days in this week I really needed to do it today Sad. Cup of tea with milk then just black coffee all day. the trainer asked if I was having some lunch (as I hid in the seminar room) and I decided to come clean. I started to say "actually I;m not, I don't know if you saw the Horizon programme....." and of course he then told me how he hadn't but his office colleague and her husband were doing the fasting and they had lost a stone each, and she was a runner and was telling him how much more energy she had and how injuries seemed to be healing much more quickly....

I decided to have a stir fry when I got home with some of the expensive calorie-free noodles. I have to say they were quite filling, so from that point of view a good thing, but at £2.50 a pack I think they will be kept for days like today when I want something quick and filling.

So back on track I hope - accepted an invite to go out to dinner next Saturday with some friends that I haven't seen since before starting this - making sure I can have a non fast day as they live near a fab Indian restaurant Grin

Laska42 · 01/10/2012 20:29

Yes it does sound silly doesn't it? eating is not something I usually have a problem with .. I think these fasting days have really changed my appetite I am so full after my dinner..

I don't usually drink during the week (as I used to drink too much everyday and that's what got me fat I think .. yes every day..at least half a bottle of red .. shameful really .. but there's some chianti left in the fridge from the weekend.. so just poured myself a glass.. ..

Rachel well my zero calorie noodles were here when I got home this evening.. they are small packets aren't they? Yep and probably too expensive to afford too often

Laska42 · 01/10/2012 20:34

catsrus what were the noodles like? I was going to fast again tomorrow , but might make it Wednesday now and get myself a large steak or something or tomorrow instead

Breadandwine · 01/10/2012 20:47

Hi folks

Thanks for the kind words!

I'd better come clean about my 'social life' :): I wanted my first post to be about my experiences of 5:2 - so I didn't want to go into too much detail about the party.

It was my 75th birthday party, and I chose all the music - from the 40s, 50s and 60s, music I'd grown up with. But further than that, I had to be able to dance to every record, so nothing that wasn't four beats to the bar!

The Jägerbomb (as I've now learned to spell it) was as a result of a challenge from my son and son-in-law. Well, I thought, you're only 75 once! I really enjoyed it - and, had they but known it, I would have had another, but they didn't offer. Perhaps just as well! Grin

I doubt I'll have three pints in an evening again until the works Christmas party - and that'll be it for the next few months. I'm sure you guys will do better than that!

About the recipe, mum, I'll gladly post that. Is there a separate recipe thread?

TellMeLater · 01/10/2012 20:53

Just had some homemade prawn vindaloo - made 4 portions, so dinner is sorted for next fast day. Have only had 400kcal today.....getting more used to not eating but TOM is coming up and I fell at this hurdle the last time.

I need to have tasty food while I'm fasting, I can't eat dull food - but I can see how it can work - poor quality, bland food would cause me to lose my appetite....I don't really want to lose my appetite though.

Claret 4200kcals - what did you eat? Something delicious I hope!
