The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all, lots of great losses and positivity on here, as well as some new starters...welcome.

last fast was thurs, weekend away with bf, which actually wasn't teh blow out I thought it woul dbe, did go to wagga mamas on fri eve with bf and sis, but hadn't eaten much at all durin the day, just some fruit and 1 slice of toast for bfast. did have 2 egg and chips at the cafe with my mum yesterday befoe coming back, but again, no bfast and onl a small 400 cal pizza for supper, so overall even with snacks I reckon i am doing around teh 2000 cal mark on non fast days.

Today a fast day, as it is my 40th eeekkk birthday on weds and I will be baking cakes for work tomorrow (my day off tomorrow). I know that I will eat more on tues and weds this week, so will fast thurs and not worry too much about any extra loss at my weigh in on friday.

i did buy a new top and jeans from tesco on sunday and had to put the size 14's back and buy size 12 skinny jeans, which is great, although slightly concerned my boobs are shrinking....damn, why is that alwasy the way????

glorious tomato soup for lunch, hot water with lemon, iced black coffee and chamomile tea going to keep me going I think.

good luck all!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 01/10/2012 10:49

ps a big woop woop I just did my bmi and have gone from 26.17 to 24.88 so now just dropped from overweight to normal....albeit top end, that's very good news! now going to workout a target aiming for lower end of normal.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 01/10/2012 10:53

oooh that's quite shocking, to get to just below the middle of healthy I would need to be 9.5 stone (I'm 5'6") I think the last time I was that I was 16! ahh well, 10 stone would do me, but actually whatever my body decides doing this woe will be where I get to, not going to stress about targets, but it is quite interesting.

AncientsOfMuMu · 01/10/2012 10:57

Hi everyone...I would like to join in as I've decided to start this way of eating in a desperate attempt to lose some weight.

I will spend some time later reading back through the thread, but for now I was wondering when is the best time to eat on a fast day? Do you start with breakfast or hang on until later to eat?

Also, do most start with 3 fast days per week?

Any brief advice welcome before I get a chance to read the previous threads tonight. Thanks.

LizLemon007 · 01/10/2012 11:07

I have only done one fast day and for now anyway I'm planning on one every five days or so. That's just me. I don't think i could face it twice a week. especially as I eat low gi and about 16-1800 cals a day as it IS. I will see how this goes. My first fast was OK, tough between 3 pm and 5pm but then I had my meagre rations for 'dinner' and made it 'til bed time, knowing I was done. so all in bad, only two hours of suffering!! not like 24 hours of suffering! so not that bad. I didn't have my breakfast until hunger actually kicked in.

in fact, the last few mornings i've found it hard to eat my all bran. normally i eat it on auto pilot. couldn't face the 7.30 bowl of all bran this morning which is not good because i've just caved in to a white muffin with butter. skipping breakfast not a good plan for me.

Aboutlastnight · 01/10/2012 11:14

Fast day for me today. Night shift again tonight so I think I will have an omelette tonight around 8/9pm then some chicken soup at 5am which hopefully sustain me so I can sleep from 9am til 2pm. Then another fast day Wednesday which should help me control those post night shift carb cravings.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 01/10/2012 11:15

hi ancients tbh we're all different, although many of us seem to do 2 or 3 days a week. and I think you need to work out what works best for you, some people really need to eat breakfast - michael moseley the presenter on teh horizon programme did breakfast and dinner, 2 days a week, tues and thurs, which is how I started, but I now find that i prefer to leave it as long as possible before I start eating and then have lunch and dinner. but usually I do tues and thurs too, but swap around to fit in with my schedule.

but some people save all their cals for one big meal. Ultimately there are no hard and fast rules.

I would see how you get on, if difficult to fast just do 1/2 days a week at first and see how you go.

There are some thoughts that a 16 hour period between your last meal yesterday and first meal today for a fast day is optimum though.

good luck!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 01/10/2012 11:18

aftereights If you've lost 17lbs (congratulations, btw!) there is no way that's all muscle you've lost. Some will be water as well, but some of it has to be a reduction in fat. I am not sure what to advise as you're unable to exercise, other than to speak to you GP if you really think it's an issue? I know if you're using a home scale to measure fat, they aren't terribly accurate. Perhaps someone else here can help?

bananas welcome! That's how I was- I heard about the diet one day, and fasted the next. :) I'd have to check the calendar but I suspect that was almost 6 weeks ago now.

Ancients I think many of us are doing 4:3, but you can certainly start with 5:2 if you feel more comfortable with that? I just leapt in with 4:3 because I have a lot to lose and I was happy with it. I highly recommend waiting as long as possible to eat on a fast day. I am at the point where I don't eat until evening. This helps me because eating earlier just stimulates hunger (for me), and if I leave it all til the evening then I can have pretty much a normal meal in the evening, if I decide to, or if I'm invited out I can have a glass of wine while others eat, etc. It keeps my life a bit more normal. :) I usually just eat veg on fast days.

Hope that helps!

AGeeksWife · 01/10/2012 11:18

Well done mumofcrazy that must feel great to be in the normal zone!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 01/10/2012 11:22

Liz fwiw, the first couple of fast days are very difficult, but get surprisingly easy after a while. I could have written your post in the beginning. Grin My way of getting through my first few fast days was to plan a baking project/ nice dinner for the next day. I've made a lot more homemade pizza dough lately, that's for sure.

OP posts:
LizLemon007 · 01/10/2012 11:26

Greeneggs, when you say you eat only veg, do you make them up into a soup? I was thinking of getting celery, carrots, leeks, and making a soup.

That weight watchers no point soup might do the trick, obviously no points is not no calories, but I doubt it would have many calories in it if it has NO points Confused Grin hopefully. I must google it.

RightBuggerforGOLD · 01/10/2012 12:33

Well done mumof and aftereights and all the other losers! I'm weighing in today too and have lost another 2lb this week. So that's 1st 10lbs in 8 weeks, yay. Around 1st 2lb to go I think.

Fast day today, just had a delicious ww risotto and the rest of the calories are for drinks today. Happy fasting or feasting everyone!

TalkinPeace2 · 01/10/2012 13:00

aftereights
can you get to an aquafit class - that will let you get your pulse rate right up and the blood flowing without nadgering your joints any further.
Do not worry about how big you are - the aqua ladies at my gym are mostly big and care more about what they will be than what they are.

ancients
everybody is different on when they are hungry.
BUT this is not a diet. This is for the rest of your life so pick what works with your system.

I'm fasting today - tea with milk this morning, black coffee and an apple for lunch, hot salad for supper. And no booze till the weekend, even on non fast days. Appointment with the scales tomorrow!

Aftereightsaremine · 01/10/2012 13:58

Thanks greeneggs & talking, unfortunately for me I'm fine when I'm in the water but as soon as I come out my joints start to swell! I'll speak to my rheumy again when I see him in November. Still weightlisd us good so I'll keep on going!

Thelittlestranger · 01/10/2012 14:08

Phew, just eaten some of the carott and coriander soup I made up, and I'm stuffed! I couldn't eat a whole portion, and 1 portion equals 115 calories, so very pleased with that.

As others have said, you need to work out what works for you. Originally I didn't eat all day, but recently I've been having a small snack at lunchtime (carb free as it stops me wanting more and more...). Today it was soup, last week it was a few slices of ham, boiled egg and a tomato. I find I'm less grumpy with the kids if I've eaten something before I pick them up...but it takes me longer to feel hungry now.

Talkinpeace, without a doubt it is booze that puts on the pounds. Evidence of which was in my scales this morning after my weekend. Sigh. Luckily I also find temporary weight gain from it can go quite fast with a good day.

awaywego1 · 01/10/2012 15:05

Fast day here. So far so good. Definately easier this second week so far-phew!
Have had a couple of coffees and a small ham salad so far and managed the 16 hour gap.
As I'm doing 5:2 I'm thinking I adding in a 24hr fast too-so from dinner to dinner this week. But mainly want to keep on top of the eating day snack binges which has led to no loss this first week-I'm still 9.10 Sad

Alaska77 · 01/10/2012 15:21

Hi All, been watching and reading with interest. I've been doing ADF for about 3 weeks now and have been pleased with my progress so far. I have about a stone to lose. Not much I know but I'm only petite so a few pounds here and there make quite a difference on my frame. I've had a couple of slip ups this weekend but did a fast yesterday which helped get things back on track. I still find that I have an overwhelming urge to eat loads of crap on my feed days but I think this will always be a work in progress for me! It's not so much that I want to eat all the crap, more that I'm excited that I can eat lots of crap so I convince myself that I should take the opportunity whilst I can! I hope the novelty will wear off sometime!

I'm not weighing myself (the scales and I have never been friends so we parted company about 7 years ago) but I have some clothes that I never seem to be able to quite get into that I'm measuring my progress against. I'm trying not to get too hung up on how I look, more about how I feel in myself.

Will keep watching with interest. Good luck everyone x

Breadandwine · 01/10/2012 15:32

Hi folks

I've been practicing 5:2 eating , after a fashion, for getting on to 8 months now.

After reading a lot of research on CR and IF, I thought I'd start it by having just half my normal calories two days a week - for the health benefits more than anything. So for 6 months I ate half a breakfast, half a lunch and half a dinner.

As a by-product I thought I would lose the kilo or so that I'd added over last Christmas - but in the event I lost that kilo pretty quickly and, over the last 6 months I lost 4 kilos altogether. Since then I've gone down to 600 calories or less and I've lost a further kilo. All this without even trying (yes, I am one of those annoying blokes, I'm afraid!)

As others have said, it doesn't matter when you eat on your fasting days. I have ground flaxseeds (for omega 3 - I'm a vegan) with apple juice for breakfast; mushrooms and tomatoes fried in One-cal olive oil with balsamic vinegar for lunch; and a celery/mushroom/cabbage-heavy chilli non carne with a small baked potato, for dinner, along with 50g of red wine. I make enough of this for two meals - I'll have half of this on each of my fast days, Monday and Wednesdays. I generally feel stuffed after this meal.

As a treat I have filter coffee on my fast days instead of the instant stuff. But, really, I find the fasting days very easy now - although the first week or two were a bit of a struggle.

I have to say I've never felt better. I spent 4 hours on the dance floor on Saturday night, drank 3 pints of beer, a large glass of red and a Jaegerbomb - and was up and out for a swim by 8 in the morning. And I'm in my mid-seventies!

I'm not too bothered about the longevity aspect of this lifestyle, but the thought of a healthy old age very much appeals to me!

MoomieAndFreddie · 01/10/2012 15:37

just marking place to read thread/s later

Thelittlestranger · 01/10/2012 16:00

Wow...great post, but can I just say the bit that stood out for me the most is that you're in your mid seventies and have a better social life on a Saturday night than me!! With added jaegerbomb.

If fasting gets me to that, I can see another happy 40 years doing it...

mumofcrazynamedkids · 01/10/2012 16:23

breadandwine - RESPECT! 4 hours on the dance floor? i'm just about to hit 40, relatively fit and healthy, and am not at all convinced I could manage that!

your chilli non carne sounds good too, maybe you could put the recipe up?

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 01/10/2012 16:35

BreadandWine that's pretty inspirational! I'm hoping the the health and energy benefits will be more noticeable once DD starts sleeping through!

ancients I think it's a bit trial and error really - I'm doing 4:3 because while I'm in the healthy BMI range which means I'll lose weight much slower, I thought going for more fast days would help me "acclimatise" to it much better - and I think it's worked. I'm only doing 5:2 for the next few weeks as we have tons of visitors so I don't want to have to work around it so massively, though helpfully my parents are doing it too which makes meal planning easier!

I definatel find holding out as long as possible best - but I'm normally starving by the time I get to 16hours so I try to keep all my food in a window in the middle of the day which allows me to fast 16hours either side. My mum on the other hand really needs breakfast and finds that sustains her until an evening meal (she does 12hours each side of eating) so I think just try it out.

DO NOT however eat less than 200kcals during the day then tank yourself up on a shit ton of coffee, chased by a few fags to keep going til you have time to eat - I ended a fast day like that last week and promptly threw up everywhere and was jittery for the next few days. Horrible!

Planned some lovely meals for when Dad is here next week so we can fast together

Fast day today!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 01/10/2012 17:22

awaywego try not to worry too much if you haven't lost after the first week, for some of us it took longer to start seeing a weight loss, and for others it was up and down, and for more still it was fast at first and then slowed right down, we're all different, good news is that you are finding second week easier and in a few weeks time you'll really be seeing a difference!

can't believe i'm on my 9th week now, the time has flown and I'm pleased with progress, and it does get easier and easier, although still some days can still feel like i'm a bit preoccupied by it, when work is slow for example! better to keep busy I find.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 01/10/2012 18:02

Hi all!

Just a quick update - was trying for a fast day today to finally get up to 5:2 rather than 6:1, unfortunately I think I've got a cold coming or something and had a headache all day and then started feeling very jittery and generally horrible. I don't think it's anything to do with fasting as I've been fine every time so far, but had a feeling it wasn't helping so have jacked it in for today and started eating a bit more (including chocs that a colleague kindly brought in which are helping me feel a bit better!). Still, I skipped breakfast and only had a teeny lunch so will still have had less calories than otherwise.

Oh well, will try again once I'm feeling a bit more normal!

(PS am also very impressed by breadandwine's social life!).

BananaGio · 01/10/2012 18:38

OK so first day done and not quite as horrendous as thought it would be. Felt OK by lunch so just had a couple of crackers and half a peach and then had home made veg soup with parmesan tonight. So by my calculations that's 428. Is the idea to not go below 500 as trying to debate whether I try to leave it at that or celebrate making it through my first day with a cup of tea and biscuit (which would make it 519)?
