The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Frenchfancy I def need to get better again about measuring! Can you roughly work it out yourself adding up the veg and oil separately?

Off to check out the recipe thread for inspiration for tomorrow (starting to get bored of miso soup)

hoops997 · 30/09/2012 19:40

Hi fellow fasters/eaters

I need to check if I'm doing this right, I'm doing ADF and currently have a window every day of 11/12 to 7/8 o clock, that I eat. Is this right does anyone else do this?

I eat normally on eat days and stick to 500 cals on fast days.

Laska42 · 30/09/2012 19:42

frenchfancy if you are worried about too much oil you could gently heat it in a pan so lots of the p oil will float to the top where you could skim a little of it off with a spoon?

Thanks GWTMH but WOT me? a poster girl!! Shock that's really nice of you..

Well i've just had the most HuMUNGouS bowl of chinese-y chicken soup h/m from poaching 85G chicken breast in stock with some ginger , garlic and a bit of star anise in it , then taken out and sliced. Then returned to the pan and heated back up with a matchstick-ed small carrot and courgette, some chopped spring onions. a bit of sliced red chilli and a drop of soy sauce and served with loads of chopped fresh coriander and squirt of lime on top ..

Definitely recommended - MFP has this at 260 cals tops and I'm utterly stuffed ! .

Laska42 · 30/09/2012 19:46

oh and a couple of mushrooms!! Grin cant have chinesey-soup without mushroom IMHO !!

TalkinPeace2 · 30/09/2012 20:34

hoops
be flexible - you'll be doing this for 20 years ....
reddwarf GI diets were designed to sell books .....
historically we did not get 3 meals a day every day, so what your doctor says is just what skinny people have always (quietly) been doing !

Skinnyeye · 30/09/2012 20:35

Hi all just been catching up with all your posts and getting ready for tomorrow's fast day. I made some spicy parsnip soup for lunch and have some left over lentil curry in the freezer for dinner. Getting a cold and feeling dreadful I would have though that a month of healthy eating would have given us immunity but it appears not Shock. Weigh in tomorrow hopefully I have gotten under the 11 stone mark - 1 down and 1 to go!!

hoops997 · 30/09/2012 20:37

talkin thanks for that, I will relax into a bit more Smile

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 30/09/2012 20:58

That sounds lush Laska....think I'll have to do usual miso tomorrow as I'm too tired to even think about menu planning. We went out for brunch today, enjoyed a non-fast day breakfast quesadilla...going to forgoe dinner in favour of cake and prosecco!

awaywego1 · 30/09/2012 21:06

Well done for all the great losses!
I've had a terrible few days-done nothing but bloody eat! I feel bloated and very fat-there is clearly not going to be any loss this week!
I'm thinking if trying fasting for 2 days next week, low cal for 2 days and then 3 days of normal eating. I can't really fast more than that as I don't want people to know (I've a normal bmi-tho currently right at the top end and people tend to be very negative about anything they see me doing that resembles a diet) BUT I need to get a handle on my eating-I've been taking the fast/feast far to literally-Ahhh.

Anyway I've planned we'll for my fast day tommorow- small ham salad for lunch, 100 cal yogurt, hm soup for tea + milk in coffee adds to 500 so I'm sure it will be hard but am looking forward to it at the moment. (Remind me of that when I'm winging tommorow afternoon Grin)

Skinnyeye · 30/09/2012 21:06

Marking my place and heading to bed feeling dreadful and V sorry for myself night all

rachelblythe · 30/09/2012 22:14

Laska - I haven't had my noodles yet either :(
Been two feed days for me, just had half a large dominos pizza and now going to bed. Fast day tomorrow. Still got a cold and cough mingled in with TotM so feeling a bit run down. Humph!

pookey · 30/09/2012 23:23

Isn't it weird how many of us look forward to the fast day.

Also I have a cold too hmm - but then so do lots of other people I know.

BuntCadger · 30/09/2012 23:31

Next fast is Tuesday and last one was thursday. Feel like a big eating gap and I'm really looking forward to fast day. Dh is too and he's noticed he has reduced appetite overall too.

poachedeggs · 01/10/2012 06:29

Fasting today - should be easy with this stinking cold! Fasting today.

Fasting today - should be easy with this stinking cold!

BananaGio · 01/10/2012 07:59

Hi can I join in. Starting with 5:2 today and kicking it off with a fast day. Had a cup of tea instead of my usual latte, planning on porridge at lunch and soup at dinner time. Watched the horizon programme over the weekend and decided I cant not try it after watching that. Have quite a bit to lose and also want to see effect on my bloods as cholesterol is borderline.

captainmummy · 01/10/2012 08:32

FAst day today - also bootcamping, so had the weigh-in and a cup of black tea, and hope to keep busy!

(Shopping later tho, never good when hungry!)

mistlethrush · 01/10/2012 08:37

Hello Banana - I'm one week in, so I'll hang around with you!

I had a chaotic weekend eating wise - went to a uni reunion where there was food put on - but not until 5 which really threw things out (not that I knew it wasn't until 5 before getting there...) and not really feeling like eating much yesterday - only 'real' carbs were some muesli at breakfast time. So I've decided to do a normal day today and fast tomorrow.

Aftereightsaremine · 01/10/2012 08:53

Official weigh in today & have lost another 3lbs making a total of 17lbs so really pleased. Only another 67 to go! May not do 4:3 this week as lots of meals out for different friends birthdays but I will choose carefully when out!
On another note my body fat percentage hasn't changed & not sure what I can do about it, as not really able to move much due to RA. Any ideas anyone?

frumperina · 01/10/2012 08:55

Second fast day today for me.
I think I'll stick to the no breakfast, only lunch and dinner routine. Worked for me last week. I noticed I have been feeling full much more quickly on the eating days, thats a promising development!
I wish Waitrose still had their Gazpacho soup for sale, that was delicious and can't have been many calories. Might have to make some myself.

Has the fasting made anyone else more sensitive to caffeine? After thursdays fast day I had a coke friday evening and did not sleep all night, at all, it was awful. I don't drink a lot of soft drinks but that has never happened to me before.

catsrus · 01/10/2012 09:02

Fast day for me - after abandoning one yesterday - note to self, do not attempt fast day when working at home on boring tasks like filling in forms neatly

laska my noodles arrived and I added them to a sweet and sour soup with tons of veggies and seaweed. They are a bit like the dried glue you get at the top of the tube when it's not been used for a while Grin - but added to the soup they were fine as "filler". With a very tasty sauce or stir fry would be ok too.

ChazsGoldAttitude · 01/10/2012 09:24

End of the first month of this for me. I started on 1st Sept and have been following 5:2.

Results of Month 1
Weight Loss - 3.6kg - a bit over half a stone
Clothes - Down a size for my trousers
BMI - below 35 for the first time in over a year

Overall I am Grin

Fasting hasn't been too bad and I haven't been going mad on non fasting days nor have I been overly restrictive.

Roll on Month 2

Thelittlestranger · 01/10/2012 09:35

I all...I have to agree with those that are saying they no longer feel like breakfast. I didn't have it on either Saturday or Sunday, but unfortunately made the calories back from wine on satuday and flapjacks on Sunday...

So, fast day for me today and happy for that to be so...just having a milky coffee, and am going to make a carrot and coriander soup for dinner I may have some ham and tomatos for lunch. Also got aerobics tonight, so I hope that I can get rid of the pounds I put on over the weekend and start losing again from tomorrow...

I have a weekend away with the girls this weekend, which will involve drinking copious amounts I'm sure, so I may fast Monday and Wednesday this week, and then on Friday just do a 24 hour fast...will see where my head is, and what the scales say at my weigh in on Friday.

TellMeLater · 01/10/2012 10:01

Fast day for me.

Going to make prawn vindaloo and serve with cauliflower rice. Will probably have yoghurt for lunch and hot drinks throughout the day.

Lost 1/2 inch off my arse since last week but scales have gone up due to a carby weekend - a few days off the carbs should see things back to normal.

rachelblythe · 01/10/2012 10:01

Hi laska, my noodles just arrived with the post man. Will definitely be giving them a go today now. I'm surprised at how small the pack sizes are. At around £2.50 per pack, I'll probably have to limit myself to one pack per week. I was thinking I might get two portions out of a pack, but doesn't look like that now they have arrived. I'm going to have a stir fry today :)
