The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I have been putting off telling my mum about the 5:2 thing as I thought that she would worry (missing meals, 500 cals ......) To my absolute surprise she wants to do it too and spent most of last night researching and planning. She has severe osteoarthritis and high blood pressure as well as having a couple of stone to lose. She skipped breakfast today and coped well. She is planning her first fast this weekend and it's me that's worried now!! Confused

TalkinPeace2 · 27/09/2012 22:49

skinnyeye be very proud of yourself. The fact that your Mum can see the benefits and knows that you and she have a reason to make changes is just good news.

pookey · 27/09/2012 22:51

Well done Bunt

awayego1 last night I went to bed at 3.30 am paid for it today as I have a head cold and made loads of mistakes at work. MyNameIsInigoMontoya you could have been describing me in an earlier post I need a kick up the bum to sleep properly and exercise.

TP2 thanks for cal info. Have decided to use mfp on non fast days to reducate myself. Just under 2000 today so about right. BTW amazing you managed to keep 2 stone off for 10 years that must be quite unusual?

catsrus · 27/09/2012 22:56

Well non-fast day here Grin

banana for breakfast, on the run as I needed to do a supermarket shop before settling down to work. Ate veg soup for lunch (left over roast veg from yesterday's fast day whizzed up with some chestnuts and stock) with some rice cakes. Knew I was eating out at a friend's tonight so was ready for potential stodge - but it was a lovely salad nicoise, I had a ferrero rocher with everyone else for pudding Smile. As it had been such a "light" calorie day I thought I needed to up the calories a bit with a couple of glasses of Wine when I got home Wink.

My calorie free noodles arrived today - so tomorrow I will make one of my favourite low cal soups. A packet of frozen stir fry veg cooked with seaweed, bouillon, balsamic vinegar and soy sauce - add a dash of chilli (and cubed tofu for added protein if you like it!). I Will add the noodles to it for a bit of bulk. My offspring love it too so a whole pan soon gets eaten Smile

Skinnyeye · 27/09/2012 22:56

LOL at walking advert - for me it's 2 colleagues, 2 friends and a dd Grin

Skinnyeye · 27/09/2012 23:03

Heading off to bed night all. I know some of you have been having trouble sleeping but I'm actually sleeping better and finding it much easier to get out of bed in the mornings. I feel better - physically and mentally than I have in years and am so glad I found this WOE and of course you guys Thanks

WilfSell · 27/09/2012 23:05

Hi again, have been awol with horrible cold that has rampaged through the family, including me. Managed my second fast day of the week today and I'm starting to get lots of 'have you lost weight?' comments, which I don't mind AT ALL Grin

God knows what week I am on now. Have been doing it since late July after a fashion. Haven't weighed in for a few days but think on Monday I had lost 9lbs in total. Still very happy with my slow but steadily downward progress not least because I am not on a diet!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 27/09/2012 23:06

well done bunt!

ugh used all my calories today and it's only 3pm...good job a busy afternoon ahead of me. Bloody croissant

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 28/09/2012 04:58

Night all, well, good morning I suppose as most of you will be up in about 2hours! Tis 9pm, made it through one of the easiest fast days so far. Bit peckish but exhausted so going to bed - just hope I don't succumb to chocolate in the night, I have a looooooooooong night of sleep training DD ahead of me

rachelblythe · 28/09/2012 06:58

Morning all! Fast day for me. Busy day for me too with taking ds to a Childrens fun park this morning, then a 3 hour tattoo session this afternoon.

Good luck to all the fasters today. Everyone not on a fast, have an enjoyable day.

Piebaldrider · 28/09/2012 07:03

Morning every one :)
I still need to read all of your posts to keep me going and its so motivational to know you are all in this like a team.

Today is my 1st fast day for week 3 and im still doing 4.3 and am scared to drop down to 5.2 incase it stops working.

I still dont weigh myself and just rely on the results i can see and feel. After years of faddy diets and the scales telling me i have put on 7 pounds overnight when i havent eaten or drank anything i decided not to bother and i became much more aware of the subtle changes in my body and i know when im burning fat. When you do Atkins you lose loads of fat but not many pounds as fat doesnt weight that much i suppose so never be disheartened with the results of the scales , try on some clothing and see how much looser it is.

Today i have woken up hungry but after excersise it will pass and yesterday i ate pizza , had as slice of birthday cake and had a few wines so i feel the need to fast today.

There is no denying how much fitter i feel for doing this even when i have my fuzzy head moments and thats enough to keep me going for now ...
Hope you all feel great today.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 07:16

phew, a normal day! only having a bowl of all bran for breakfast, not very exciting but so nice not to have to ocunt the calories in it.

Bon Courage to anybody doing the fast day today, especially for the first time.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 08:01

I'm really enjoying the skimmed milk in my tea & coffee this morning but even a litre of skimmed milk has 410 calories and I get through almost a litre of skimmed milk a day! Shock

mumofcrazynamedkids · 28/09/2012 08:25

Morning all, well yesterday was a fast day, and i was doing brilliantly until a gf came over in teh evening, and then I decided to have 2.5 glasses of wine for dinner, but actually that's probably fine, no longer felt hungry and enjoyed teh wine and company immensely.
Then this morning i weighed in and I am ecstatic, I weigh 11 stone dead, whcih means i have lost 8.6 lb's in 8 weeks, so a definite 1lb a week average, which is just perfect for me, given i am absolutely eating what I want on non fast days.

just had a slice of wholemeal toast with unsweetened peanut butter and marmite with a kiwi, a small glass of oj and a strong coffee for breakfast and feel stuffed!

off to visit my bf for weekend and hope he will appreciate the slightly flatter tummy!

happy fast/non-fast day all, and have a great weekend.
xxx

Laska42 · 28/09/2012 09:05

I cant remember when I last posted my loss , but my 'official 'WI' is fridays and i've now lost 10lb in 5 weeks. So very pleased with that .. scales firmly on 10.10 ...would like to get to 10 if Ican, but if not ,well so be it .. I think ill be doing this WOE for good now..

This makes 3 stone i've lost all told (although most of that was over a year a go and before doing this I had been about 11.7 (losing and gaining the same few pounds for about 18 months ).so im 'well chuffed' as we Portsmouth girls say!

Feed day today!

I did make about 800cal yesterday , rather than 500 due to stupidly not easting enough the day before (forgot to eat !??!!) and getting all shaky mid morning, but im ok with that .. still got my 16 hours in and feel fine now

I have a nice lunch out with mate today and planning some Wine Wine this weekend..

Good luck all fasters today!

2012fan · 28/09/2012 09:13

Off to a Macmillan coffee morning to have a lovely slice of cake! You fasters will have to wait till tomorrow - I'll be on the wagon then.

GreenEggs my fish and chips were divine and haven't lain heavy but they have given me a hangover!! Wink

And awaywego1 yes, I have suffered with insomnia and bad sleep. It's the only down side of this WOE for me.

Have lost almost a pound this week!

Thelittlestranger · 28/09/2012 09:34

My weigh in is on a Friday, which is usually the day after a fast day, but I swapped days this week. I'm pleased to say that despite eating normally yesterday (1800 calories) I have still lost 2.5lbs this week!! It was 3.5lbs yesterday after my fast day...

Have decided not to have breakfast so I can enjoy my banana bread at a Macmillan coffee morning at my daughter's school this morning, and we're planning on fish and chips tonight.

I suspect I will not have breakfast tomorrow, as I'm off to the gym, and will try to get a 16hour intermediate fast in, as I don't usually have 4 feed days in a row, but I can't bring mule to have a full fast day!

Does anyone else feel hungrier the next morning after a feed day, than they do after a fast day?

This thread really helps me to not bore my OH so much about this WOE, so thank you!!

Blondie276 · 28/09/2012 09:48

Hello all,
Have been following this amazing thread to find out more an started a week ago. I done 4:3 this week and been really good with only sticking to about 1500 cals on an eating day.
So.... A week down today and weigh in...AND I'VE PUT ON WEIGHT!!!
Only a pound but help!
Anyone else found this? Any advise?

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 09:56

I feel so fine today, and amazingly when I woke up this morning, not hungry and I didn't race downstairs for breakfast at top speed, so with this in mind, I'm planning another fast day for tuesday. I think I'll do one every five days, roughly, which will be less than 5:2, but why do this more than necessary?

blondie i'm no expert on this 5:2, very new to it, but 4:3 sounds too much to me, you're fasting too often and it's bound to effect how you eat on the normal days. I'd try fasting LESS. Otherwise, what are you going to do, fast every second day of your life for ever?

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 10:02

I will call it the 24:6 woe

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 10:02

btw, what does ADF stand for, I was hoping I would have worked it out by now but still Confused

catsrus · 28/09/2012 10:21

don't panic blondie - it sounds to me like you are not eating enough on the non fast days.

I think 4:3 is fine tbh, once you lose what you need to then you can begin to come down to 5:2 then 6:1 and so on until you find what ratio keeps your weight stable.

Just stick with it for a few weeks. I haven't lost anything this week, but experience over the last few months tells me that I should just carry on and ignore fluctuations - the downward trend will still be there.

hoops997 · 28/09/2012 10:24

liz it stands for alternate day fasting which is what I'm doing, basically I'm fasting every other day not following 5:2 Smile

It seems to be working for me 6 lbs lost in the 2 weeks I've been on it
