The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

its Alternate Day Fasting liz - the most extreme version of this WOE when literally you fast every other day.

Intermittent Fasting is the general term for any variation of this - and it's this process which has been shown to have health benefits apart from weight loss. How many fast days you incorporate really depends on whether you want to lose weight or just get the other health benefits. I'm doing 4:3 (having started on 5:2) because it suits me and I don't find it that difficult to maintain. Once I am at target weight then I will experiment with how many fast days I need to do to keep the weight stable.

welshmill · 28/09/2012 10:35

blondie I'm doing 4:3 at the moment (started off at 5:2 at the end of August but sort of fell into doing an extra day after that so carried on) and I've found that I really have to eat my maintenance calories on normal days (about 1820 for me as I'm a shortie). I've managed to lose 8lb so far. But it has been in fits and starts and sometimes I don't seem to lose anything at all but having measured my waist and hips every few weeks I know I'm on a downward trend.

Blondie276 · 28/09/2012 10:37

Thank you! Was beginning to panic- especially as I have a wedding dress to shoe horn myself into!
I thought I'd do 4:3 until I've made a bit of a loss at least. I'm 5'6 an weigh 10st10 at the mo but would like to lose atleast 10 by June so hopefully I'll start noticing a difference soon. I FEEL smaller so maybe weight takes a while to show?
Thanks for your help!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 28/09/2012 10:57

lizlemon adf is alternate day fasting, which is one of the methods advised in the panorama programme, i agree with catsrus blondie 4:3 fine, but you are also restricting your calories too much on the other days, it's likely your body has gone into starvation mode and is holding onto the calories.

for many of us it takes longer to start, or is up and down in the beginning, I would weigh yourself only once a fortnight, give yourself a good 6 weeks and see where you are then, my progress has been very up and down, but i've just continued as I find this WOE easy and overall I'm definitely getting the results i want.

woop woop to laska excellent news on weigh in!

catsrus · 28/09/2012 11:13

I think that's right mumof - for me it's really nice to just relax about it and carry on with a WOE which in the end will have the result I want, even if I don't see it on a weekly basis Grin 11lb lost so far!

BurningBright · 28/09/2012 11:34

Nosh day for me today. Fourth fast was yesterday. Have lost 8lbs in two weeks. Am most happy, although assume this will slow down in the coming weeks.

saladfingers · 28/09/2012 11:45

Wow this is moving fast!
Not checked in since last thread. So many new comers and successes.
I'm a soup convert this week although I cant resist a slice of wholemeal to go with it.I'm still having 500 all in one go around 2pm.Evenings were getting easier but last few have been hard again.
I changed to this WOE 5 weeks ago today.I started with 5:2 but am now on 4:3.My BMI has fallen from 31.3 to 28.8 in that time. The scales say I have lost 16lbs.I think it feels like more in inches but didnt measure at the start. However had cholesterol tested last week and it was 7!Blush God only knows what it was before i started.Planning on having it tested again in Dec.
The thing that amazes me most is my changed attitude to food and the realisation that I have probably only ever felt really been hungry before this a few times in my entire life!ShockI used to be a snacker so was constatly grazing.
I feel totally committed to this which also amazes me.When i get to a healthier weight I'll probably go back down to 5:2.
Has anyone else had a cholesterol test and has something to compare it to?

HappyOrchid · 28/09/2012 11:45

Tried to post on Weds, but the site kep throwing me out.

Anyhoo, Fasted Mon & Weds and both went really well. I have discovered that for me making sure I go minimum of 16 hours from previous day, then having a stock cube and a piece of fruit for lunch, then saving all my calories for tea works best.

I have averaged approx 450 calories on each fast day & am fasting again today. I feel a lot slimmer and did do a sneaky weigh th is morning (after tea and a glass of wine at the pub) and am 3lb down this week.

This is Week 8 & I really feel that this weeks fast days have been the best. IN the beginning I was grazing and spreading my 500 cals across the day. In the first 7 weeks I lost just over 4lb. I work away a lot & eat out, but nevertheless I wasn't really seeing any results.

It seems that for ME at least making sure that fasting is maintained for at least 16 hours one day and 12 to the next morning is working far more effectively.

Will let you know after proper weigh in on Monday how I've done.
Good luck to all those fasting today, self included.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 28/09/2012 12:06

I also do 4:3, and have lost 11 lbs or so with it. It's not a problem of too much fasting, it's more that you need to make sure you aren't dieting on your eating days, too. Eating your maintenance calories is important. If you're eating 1500 cals on eating days, and 500 on fasting days, then you're only averaging just over 1000 calories per day. That's too low for most people.

(I know several others have just said a lot of that but I thought it was worth noting the calorie average)

I don't actually count calories on my non-fast days. I might be able to lose a bit faster if I made some additional changes, but at the moment I'm quite fine with the pace I'm losing at.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 12:25

ah right thanks for spelling that out!

I don't think I could face fasting every second day. I feel gung ho for the next one now that I've decided it's not til next tuesday!!

mistlethrush · 28/09/2012 12:52

I had to remind myself to eat sensibly yesterday evening - and even then had less than I would normally have done and didn't feel hungry - which is good.

Laska42 · 28/09/2012 14:39

Eating enough on food days is the problem i'm having too.. just not so hungry (maybe i never was! just thought i was....) and I definately didnt eat enough calories on food days earlier on in the week .

Anyway no probs today, just had fab lunch out ...pepper and almond frittata and salad (with good drizzle of a local producer's cherry and chilli oil - rather yum actually) .

Lamb and couscous tonight i think ,and Wine (Oh yes) Grin
No more fasting for me until Sunday ...

Good luck all weekend fasters .. Smile

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 14:41

I need to get a recipe for a nice soup in time for next tuesday. If I can start off the onions and leeks on about 15mls of rapeseed oil, how many cals would that be? (the oil I mean). celery and leeks and onion all have very few.

TalkinPeace2 · 28/09/2012 14:43

Hopped on the scales at the gym today and had to set the big weight to 50 rather than 60 - OK it was 59.8 but psychologically moving the big weight to the left for the first time in a year was just WONDERFUL.

Overslept so no breakfast today and small bowl of soup for lunch but as its an eat day today, pizza and wine for supper.

And in that really annoying way that men do, DH has lost three inches from round his waist (trousers that were tight need a belt) in less than a month !!!

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 14:45

Well done!!

haven't weighed myself yet... will leave it 'til a couple of days after my second fast.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 28/09/2012 16:19

Wow some amazing losses, really motivating!

I am on feed day today and bit frazzled with DD's potty training, so have been picking at my box of chocs a bit to cheer me up, but never mind! (She has pretty much cracked it really, but still always seems to need the potty when we're in a rush, and then faffs about wanting to empty it herself etc etc). Also had a Macmillan coffee morning at DS's school today, but I wasn't too bad despite all the lovely cakes they had.

Think I'm going to try for another fast day on Monday perhaps, to finally get up to 5:2.

frenchfancy · 28/09/2012 17:07

Talkinpeace2 don't you just hate it when men do that? DH has lost 5kg to my 2.5kg, and he is eating much more than me on both fast and feed days.

I realise that one of my past problems has been eating the same protion size as him. Obviously he needs more calories than me, so he should eat more than me - it just doesn't seem fair Envy

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 28/09/2012 17:25

some brilliant weight losses ladies! I'm not going to bother weighing in today as my clothes feel exactly the same so pretty sure the scales won't be any less.

I'm doing 4:3, pretty sure I'm getting in enough calories on feed days so not sure why there's no change. Even if I am in normal BMI range surely the drop in overall calories should be having an effect?

TalkinPeace2 · 28/09/2012 17:58

An interesting link for Friday evening....
www.cockeyed.com/photos/bodies/heightweight.html
I found it really useful when trying to visualise my target weight.

Looking at the pictures I can relate to the 5'5" and 10 stone and would be happy looking like any of the 5' 5" 9 stone ....

claretandamberforever · 28/09/2012 18:04

I've settled into a 3:3:1 which is

M = fast
T = Eat
W = fast
Th = Eat
Fr - Fast
Sat - Eat
Sun - moderate calories (around 1300)

With a Saturday morning weight in and I appear to have lost 2lbs this week :-) which I am happy with.

rachelblythe · 28/09/2012 19:10

Hey, I had my Thai red curry for dinner earlier, which was yummy, but I was bloody starving by the time I ate it, 23 hours after my last meal! I know there are 1 or 2 people who do the compete 24 hr fasting with no food, I don't think that is for me!
I have been doing this for about 7 weeks now and experienced the metal taste in my mouth for the first time last night, I'm am just starting my period and have a cough/cold so hoping it was just a combination of those things and isn't going to be a regular occurrence.

BelinaTheChicken · 28/09/2012 21:47

Oh dear, was supposed to be a fast day, and had planned my food out perfectly, started on the black coffee (no coffee mate, yay!) and green tea, then DH invited a friend round for a roast, so ended up eating around 800 for the day (bloody DH and his perfect bloody Yorkshire puddings), so now not sure if I should do a fast tomorrow, or just leave it? Or maybe just not go crazy eating tomorrow instead. Going out for lunch with PIL on Sunday so definitely won't be fasting then.

TalkinPeace2 · 28/09/2012 21:55

2000 + 500 = 2500 -800 = 1300 for tomorrow : so long as you do a 16 hour gap ....

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 28/09/2012 22:06

All getting a bit mathematical for me to get my head around.

Really struggling today even though it's a feed day, just exhausted. Prob combination of DD and her shitty sleep (up constantly in the night and I've finally just won a two hour battle to get her to nap), working myself quite hard in the pool for an hour this morning, added to hour round trip to the gym walking pushing 2DC in the buggy and stupidly using chocolate and sweets today to give me quick energy boosts. Stupid stupid, am exhausted!!

On the plus side I did weigh myself after all and lost 1lb a week doing this Grin

TalkinPeace2 · 28/09/2012 22:10

(((Mousey)))
the main thing is that fast days are NOT interspersed with feast days - those with BMI over 25 need to be aware that their reduced hunger is a GOOD THING
those of us with BMI under 23 can have a tad too much wine once a week (lucky that !)
