The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks talking, but will be a long time before I'll be able to see my ribs I'm 6 stone overweight! Actually now 5 stone!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 27/09/2012 17:15

Adding to the experiences of fruit on fast days, def make me more hungry and I end up snacking to stave off hunger when a proper meal would prob be better.

Fast day today, feeling surprisingly ok despite horrific night with DD. ate too much chocolate yesterday!!

Laska42 · 27/09/2012 17:23

Well the headache didnt go until after my lunch which i end up eating early as started feeling really shaky, ratty and ill at about 11.30 this morning ..Then I thought about it and put my yesterdays food into MFP and discovered that I only ate just over 1000 calories after a fast the day day before (though wasnt hungry ) . So probably thats why I started feeling so bad..

So I have sort of abandoned the fast today and just had the lamb steak I forgot to eat yesterday so that makes about 850 for today .rather than 500 but im ok with that .. ..

But forgetting to eat food? Thats' not like me at all...

mommybunny · 27/09/2012 17:23

Is anyone else experiencing mouth ulcers on this WoE? I don't know if it's this bug I picked up or the diet. I usually get them when I've been having lots of sweets but I haven't lately.

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 17:29

ok, phew, i got to 5.30. Just had my beans and they felt like food! I'm happy again. I know now I've got to 5.30 I'll be fine, I'll go to be with the kids if I want to. But I think I'll be fine now! I know now that from 3pm-5pm is the KILLLLLLLLERRRRRRR

i think i'm feeling strong enough to make the sandwiches for tomorrow.

mommybunny, have you recently cut down on bread? i got mouth ulcers when I cut out bread last year. I switched to only my own oat bran bread. 'bread' ha ha. I took a vitimin b supplement and they went away. but it definitely coincided with giving up bread.

mommybunny · 27/09/2012 17:47

Hmm, Liz, haven't cut out bread, but probably have cut back a bit. Will keep it in mind, thanks. Well done for getting through today!

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 17:57

@ captainmummy that's interesting that 6:1 is working for you and you don't have a lot to lose. I think I may try doing this once a week before I try doing it twice a wee! why not? I would say I don't have much to lose either. My BMI is about 23. I know that if I do manage to lose a few pounds it will go off my tummy and inner thighs though, so I feel so much better.

Aboutlastnight · 27/09/2012 18:00

Am torturing myself watching nigellisimo

awaywego1 · 27/09/2012 18:26

About-I'm watching Ramsay but have just eaten my porridge so surviving!

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 18:52

I am up to 490 but i'm going to have a punnet of rasberries later. which will take me to 525. I'll feel a bit guilty! like I've failed. But the 500 is approximate isn't it?

Just eating normally tomorrow will be such a treat. I will really savour it. (like they always tell you to)

frenchfancy · 27/09/2012 19:00

Liz - save the punnet of raspberries for breakfast. They are quite high in sugar to be eating in the evening on a fast day. they might make you feel better for about 30mins, but then you will feel worse when you go to bed.

Raspberries for breakfast however always feels like a treat :)

awaywego1 · 27/09/2012 19:28

Liz-remember its about it being a sustainable woe-and the 500 cals is just a rough guide.
I've gone over-had a huge bowl of porridge (made with 90% water) but it will have taken me over I'd imagine. Not to worry!

mommybunny · 27/09/2012 20:15

I've gotten through the fast today, but still feel so rough. I've been in bed just about all day! I don't know if I'd have felt better not fasting - DH was trying to get me to abandon it today. I did have a headache earlier - don't know whether it was the fasting or the fever. But at least it's almost over, and I've gotten through it. Tomorrow will be better (I hope?).

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 27/09/2012 20:24

mommybunny reckon when you're sick you just survive as best you can - I'd have been tempted to stay on the fast too as eating just isn't enjoyable anyway when you're ill. Well done for getting through it, hope you feel better tomorrow.

Have had one cup of coffee today and going to try to get through the rest of the day without caffeine. Had a DELISH croissant for 300kcals at 11am with a friend, couldn't resist but knew I had 100kcals of miso sitting in the fridge for later so should be fine as it's properly filled me up so far. I think I OD'd on caffeine last fast day hence being so horrifically sick - hoping water will keep me going. I hate the afternoons and evening of fast days because you're all going to bed so I have nobody to keep me going!!

RightBuggerforGOLD · 27/09/2012 21:20

2nd fast day of week 8 for me, got another on Saturday. I discovered a fab meal today, a slice of nimble toast with a slice of wafer thin ham, a slice of leerdammer light and an egg (fried in that 1 cal spray) on top. Effing delicious!! Tastes really naughty but only about 190 Cals.

Yesterday I went shopping and I bought a load of new clothes - most of them will look better in a few lbs time, but it won't be long and I deserved the reward! Also I had nothing to wear, so just had to. It feels fab having a nice choice of trendy clothes again, even if they are all a little bit snug. I saw a friend today who I only saw about 3 weeks ago and she said how 'slim' I was looking!! Ideally I still have probably a stone and a few lbs to go, but I've come so far and I feel like I'm really getting there now.

rachelblythe · 27/09/2012 21:23

Been a feed day for me, I had my dinner at 5:30 and planned to have maybe a bowl of cereal before bed but I've got a terrible cough and sore throat and just didn't fancy anything else.

I have put some Quorn to marinate in a Thai red curry sauce in the fridge, to have with a stir fry tomorrow (fast day), but I'm busy in the morning, then have to rush to another appointment in the afternoon and won't get home until about 5 for my dinner.hoping I'll be able to survive that long without caving in! I really want some rice or noodles with my dinner so can't waste any more calories throughout the day.

Been shopping today and bought all sorts of herbs and spices ready to try when my shiritaki noodles arrive :)

For any fasters, well done - you have made out, now go to bed! :) I know I am.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 27/09/2012 21:39

Aftereights I don't use anything to measure body fat specifically. I have lost just over 10 lbs, though, and have moved down a size in my jeans. The ones I wore when I started this are hanging off of me.

So, I must be losing fat, because my hips aren't carrying a load of muscle. :)

When I lost weight years ago (3 stone in 6 months) I gave all my old clothes away and bough a whole new wardrobe - and the wonderful thing about being a size 10 is that Charity shops have some real bargains in designer labels ....

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 27/09/2012 22:04

3 stone in 6months? wow, that sounds incredibly impressive! What size are you now TalkIn, and what size are you trying to get to?

RightBugger shopping trip sounds ace. I need to go myself in October, now I'm not breastfeeding anymore need new underwear and new post pregnancy clothes - I seem to rotate about 3 outfits and it's all summer wear. Really really hoping I can get in a size smaller!

TalkinPeace2 · 27/09/2012 22:12

mouseyhair
I was 12 stone. Joined WW. Went 8 times. Sussed out what I needed to do and kept at it till I got to 9 stone.
Over the last 10 years one of those stones snuck back.
Since starting 5:2 a month ago have lost 7 pounds. 7 to go till BMI of 22 again.

Skinnyeye · 27/09/2012 22:40

Hi all been really busy this week so not on much. Finally managed to catch up with all your posts - you do talk a lot!!

Week 4 fast day 2 and it's been the easiest yet :) Had some soup at lunch and another BBC Good food recipe for dinner.
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1364/spicy-root-and-lentil-casserole
very tasty it was too

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 27/09/2012 22:42

Well provided I can make it from now to bedtime without getting the munchies, I've not done too badly... stuck to my 500 cals, except I did get led astray by DH into having a teeny bit of wine - less than half a glass though so hopefully not too bad! I wouldn't normally have any on a fast but he was a bit upset about something and wanted a glass of wine and a chat I think so I had a tiny bit to join him. Still, managing to stop at such a teeny amount can't be bad.

Goal for next week: Manage 2 fast days somehow!

BuntCadger · 27/09/2012 22:43

End of 16th fast day and week 7 and I've lost 15lb in total Smile

awaywego1 · 27/09/2012 22:44

Does anyone else suffer from fast day insomnia? Happened on my last fast day too-so frustrating-am shattered but cannot sleep! Angry

awaywego1 · 27/09/2012 22:44

Well done bunt that's amazing!
