The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

2012 beware the fish and chips! Grin Not preaching, just bitter words of experience from a couple of weeks back. I only ate half and that fish sat like a rock in my stomach until halfway through the next day.

Enjoy your evening, it sounds very nice!

my kids always get in from school starving so i had to go to tesco just now and get carbs and cereals and bananas and milk. not the most exciting basket ever but I could SMELL those bagels and shreddies.

ChazsGoldAttitude · 27/09/2012 13:32

Hello all and well done to all those who have lost weight.

Lakota - given how close you are to your appropriate weight I think your steady weightloss is very good.

I'm fasting today helped by the cold / chesty thing that a few of you seem to have. Only just starting to feel peckish now and I had planned to eat at 2pm anyway.

I went down a trousers size last week and they are now feeling comfortable rather than slightly tight so I assume I've lost a bit more.

One thing I have really noticed is how habitual some of my eating is. Yesterday (normal day) mid afternoon I kept thinking I must get something to eat but I wasn't in the least bit hungry, its just that I am used to eating mid afternoon. I had a cuppa in the end but I was really shocked how strong the urge to eat was even though I wasn't physically hungry.

Lakota · 27/09/2012 13:32

Ooh that sounds like maths. It doesn't help that I'm only guessing when I started. I guess I should be a little more scientific about it. And have a proper weigh in day and time - it seems to fluctuate a bit.

Lakota · 27/09/2012 13:37

ChazsGoldAttitude - I found the very same thing last night. I usually eat something post dinner and pre-bed as I eat dinner with the children somewhere between 5/6pm, but despite thinking 'Oh I'll be hungry if i don't eat something else before bed and it's a fast day tomorrow', in the end I forgot about it and kept myself busy on YouTube instead! (Am also trying to generally improve my look as well - am useless at hair at makeup so getting some hints!_

ThatBintAgain · 27/09/2012 13:41

Slightly random aside, having just watched the Horizon programme, am I the only person that thinks Michael Mosely is quite...hot? Did you see him looking back at pics of his younger self at the end? Grin

mommybunny · 27/09/2012 13:44

thatbint' no, you were not the only one Grin.

BuntCadger · 27/09/2012 14:29

Nope bint Grin

Fast day here, 2nd of week 7 and number 16 for me . Had to make extra hole on belt Grin size 12 jeans fit comfortably now Smile

BuntCadger · 27/09/2012 14:30

They are a small 12 too Grin

TalkinPeace2 · 27/09/2012 14:36

CALORIE COUNTING : I check foods on fitday.com : I did a food diary for a while but now I mainly use it to check individual meals - especially those cooked from scratch ingredients. Only downside it its American so is a bit confuddled by the Eccles Cake I just had for part of lunch.

EATING ON NON FAST DAYS : The guidance is to eat 2,000 calories a day which is 14,000 a week.
Almost everybody underestimates their calorie intake by probably around 20% (that is why their BMI is not 21) so are actually having 2,400 which is 16,800
Fasting down to 500 calories a day is therefore a 3,000 calorie drop ideally in a week.
If you plan to maintain your current weight, that allows 2,200 a day for the other days
BUT on the 20% margin of error guesstimate, aim for 1,900 and the weight will come off steadily down to a healthy BMI with healthy organs inside that skin.

SNACKING : Eating outside of mealtimes is a very recent invention (since the early 1960's) of the food industry to sell more of their products. It has NO basis in historically healthy eating and the sooner you can train your body to accept that your stomach will empty periodically the better.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 27/09/2012 14:43

buntcadger woop woop, you must be so pleased.

thatbint I agree about Michael Wink

well I only ate 2/3 of my glorious african spiced veg soup (didn't really like it) so was feeling virtuous at 116 cals, and then plates of food came into kitchen from a client meeting, I just couldn't resist a salmon and a chicken skewer. wonder how many cals??? they were only small (size of a mans middle finger?), more than 100 cals?

Confused
LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 14:47

I have a headache now. is that normal? I felt FINE until half an hour ago. I have 250 cals worth still left to eat, and it's only ten to three so I will try to hold out for another hour for my 'dinner'. I'll have some celery now though

TalkinPeace2 · 27/09/2012 14:51

Liz
have you had plenty of water / black coffee / black tea ....

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 15:08

Feel a bit better now. The two nurofen have kicked in. had a yog (50 cals) and more celery!! I have been drinking, lots of peppermint tea. (and water).
Kids fighting now. Hard on the nerves.

captainmummy · 27/09/2012 15:10

Crazynamedkids - linseeds in hot water... always does tyhe trick for me!

Today started off as a fast day, as wasn;t hungry for breakfast, and only just got home from work (2 coffees with milk). Had 2 big bowls of curries cauli soup homemade form yesterday,. but no idea how many cals in it!

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 15:14

Captainmummy, i see you are doing 6:1. is that working? I'm thinking through my headache, why do this twice a week if once a week has the same effect?

awaywego1 · 27/09/2012 15:17

2nd fast day for me today and finding it tough! I'm really bloody hungry-and quite lightheaded but it's early days so am hoping it will get easier.
So far I've had half a pineapple, a banana and 3 coffees with a dash of milk. Managed to resist birthday cake at work-so very proud of that Grin really looking forward to my homemade tomato soup later and a couple of cups of tea and that will take me to roughly 500 cals (although I am very much estimating) really hope I can avoid any further temptation.
What's really helpful for me is having a couple of totally Non negotiable alcohol free days-when I was calorie counting I would always factor in a small glass of wine-with this woe there is no room for that which I think is very healthy.

captainmummy · 27/09/2012 15:25

Liz - i'm only on my 3rd week of 6.1 and only lost about 1lb (bbut I don;t have much to lose, only about another 2-3 lb), I'm low-carbing as well. Today wasn't supposed to be a fast day, I did one on monday, so it appears i'm doing 5.2 this week!

Are you drinking enough water (for the headache?) you should be on about 2 litres a day, tho you do need to check you're getting sufficient electrolytes too.

ChazsGoldAttitude · 27/09/2012 15:48

awaywego
Good luck for today.
One thing I find is that I am better if I don't have anything sweet, even fruit, on fast days as I tend to feel hungry fairly soon afterwards. I know this is different for other people, I'm a bit sugar sensitive. For your next fast I would think about whether a bit less fruit and more protein might help stave off some of those hunger pangs.

Your soup sounds lovely.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 27/09/2012 15:51

Liz it's also worth just giving it a couple of fast days (not in a row, I just mean do this for a week or so) to get a feel for how they'll be. The first fast day or two are quite tough, at least they were for me. Now I find them rather easy.

Good luck :) Fast day here, I've not eaten anything, just had coffees and water. It'll be veg tonight, and perhaps a bit of soup.

Just a tip for the headaches, use paracetamol rather than Ibruprofen. Anti inflamitories are not good on an empty stomach, taken too often they can lead to bad stomach cramps and eventually ulcers.

I was prescribed them recently for a broken arm, and had to learn to take them just after eating to avoid some very unpleasant side effects.

Aboutlastnight · 27/09/2012 16:19

Was doing well until my three consecutive nightshifts -was okay first two, tried to eat normally, not eat during the night, cereal for 'breakfast' at 4am Hmm but...

Third nightshift was meant to be fasting and I snapped and had a packet of crisps and a Twix at 5am then toast when I got home at 8.30am - I was ravenous for fat and sugar.
So have put on 4 pounds but sm fasting again today.

Does anyone else do nightshift? Anyone one worked out how to fast when on nights?

Aftereightsaremine · 27/09/2012 16:29

Has everyone lost body fat on this WOE? I've lost a stone but body fat has stayed the same. Anyone know how I can improve on this? Can't exercise due to RA & I can only walk about 15 mins a day & that's with a walking stick!

awaywego1 · 27/09/2012 16:43

Chazs-that's a good point about the fruit sugars-will aim for more protein next time!
Quick decision-should I go for homemade soup or porridge for tea?? Not sure high will serve me best?

TalkinPeace2 · 27/09/2012 16:55

aftereights If you are using a home set of bodyfat scales I'd not worry too much. Compared with the data I had taken on me in a hospital, they have a margin of error up to 10% !
Depending on your weight, when you have not eaten, can you pull your tummy in so that the bottom of your ribs show? Is your abdomen a smooth curve - as if you have an invisible football pushed into it ? Then your visceral fat - the REALLY dangerous one that home scales do not measure properly - is dropping.
