5:2 Diet Thread: Part Four! Sit down, have a cuppa..

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

It's my fast day. Luckily hunger hasn't even kicked in yet, been up for nearly an hour. I have the oat bran muffin in my handbag, so I won't eat it until I am hungry.

Belina, I can imagine, I feel all "in the zone" about this today and I know I can do it. I'd say it just gets a bit drudgy when you're losing count of how many times you've done it.

frumperina · 27/09/2012 07:57

First fast day today.
About to have my first cup of herbal tea and thought I won't eat until lunchtime, then have some scrambled egg maybe.
I really hope I can stick with this, my BMI is 33 Blush, I need to shift the weight!

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 08:00

ThinkICan, I must read that article later!

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 08:01

My first fast day too frumperina. Good luck. I'm on my second black coffee here. Would normall have had about 50mls of semi milk in that.

BrigitBigKnickers · 27/09/2012 08:11

I nearly broke my fast last night by having a yogurt but strangely I tried the first taste and it was horrible so I thought perhaps it was off so I tried another but that tasted awful too so I didn't eat it. I am wondering if I am beginning to lose my taste for sweet things?

Have woken up this morning (after having slept brilliantly- not like me at all Smile not especiallly hungry- am going to try and wait a bit before I eat to eek out the fast for a bit longer.

captainmummy · 27/09/2012 08:13

I fasted on monday - i'm doing 6.1 - but woke up not hungry,so might turn today into another fast. I ate such a lot yesterday, that it couldn't hurt.

I've got curried cauliflower soup i made yesterday, for lunch later.

AGeeksWife · 27/09/2012 08:18

I've been reading these threads with interest (it's taken me days to get through!) and I really like the sound of it.

I like not eating but have not really done this before as I'm worried that when I do eat it will stick and my metabolism will be messed up- is it the consistency of fasting that prevents this?

Also I would like to only eat dinner on fast days, is that ok or does that make it too long to go without? Physically rather than mentally as my brain is ok with this.

I have a lot of weight to lose, I'd like to break the cycle of deprivation and then long binge phases and this seems ideal for me.

I am going to do 5:2 for a few weeks and would like to build up to ADF but want to see how I go by myself before telling DH (and he'd know if I was ADFing!)

BrigitBigKnickers · 27/09/2012 08:38

Blimey- just took the bull by the horns and weighed myself.

Being doing this for 10 days (inc 4 fast days) and I have lost...

5lbs Grin

On a food day- this just gives me the incentive not to go too mad and eat sensibly (which I have spent the last ten years not doing!)

Laska42 · 27/09/2012 08:39

yes .. cake i can easily leave.. but TIC and Pookey.. just put me in a room with a packet of tortilla chips and some dips .... or a lump of nice cheese .crusty bread and butter and pate and pickle .... or a pan of mashed potatoes with lots of butter (cant make mashed potato anymore - i just eat the lot!)..

Ah ...I think ive just described my Last meal option !
Now planned on fasting again today but woke up with horrible headache today .. have fasting lunch in offiice with me but will see how it goes

Laska42 · 27/09/2012 08:46

oh look ,sorry fasters for describing all that lush food..I do hope i havent runied your fasting resolvefor today .. , as for me , well .. its made me feel quite weak at the knees..

stomps off for green tea and to work ..

frenchfancy · 27/09/2012 08:52

I was another one who mentioned chocolate cake. It was my daughter's birthday this week so birthday cake is on the menu. I am not a binger, never have been (unless you count wine). I had a small slice of cake last night, but have no temptation to eat the whole cake.

I was still under my non-fast day allowance of 2300 cals by a good 300 cals.

I genuinely see this as a long term WOE and as such I eat normally on my non-fast days. That means chips sometimes and cake others, but it also means lots of veg and fruit.

I am loosing weight slowly (about 1lb per week), I have no doubt if I cut out all the junk then I would loose weight quicker, but then it would feel like a diet rather than a WOE and I would not be able to stick to it long term.

catsrus · 27/09/2012 09:32

Lol Laska we've both definitely got the same taste buds Grin

Goog luck to those starting out - realised I can't remember whether this is coming to the end of week 7 or 8 and I have no idea how many fast days I've done ... I'm just slotting fast days in where I can (never 2 in a row) until I reach my target, then I will slowly do less. The scales now consistently show 10.7 ( don't have to "lean to the right" to get the result LOL) so my loss is 11lb.

Some fast days I eat salad, veg etc throughout - others I wait until the evening meal and have only tea with milk and black coffee during he day - it depends where I am and what I'm doing work-wise. I would say find what works for you and be prepared to be flexible - that's the beauty of this WOE Grin

ThatBintAgain · 27/09/2012 10:03

Ok, after complaining on Monday I weighed this morning and have lost 2lbs since then. I'm fairly happy with that! I have got the weird taste a bit again today, it seems to happen the day after a fast, anyone else finding that?

mumofcrazynamedkids · 27/09/2012 10:25

yay frenchfancy I am so pleased to read your post, for me too this is a WOE, and i definitely eat normally on non fast days (which may mean choc/bread/cake/sweets, or may mean loads of veg or fish or meat)

I lost 2 stone of baby weight plus another 2 stone 4 years ago doing Paul Mckenna which really worked for me, and taught me about eating smaller portions and more importantly listening to my body and eating what I actually wanted rather than what I thought I should eat. I wish i hadn't gained a stone back over the past year, but a divorce dragging out, long distance boyfriend and being a single parent to 2 amazing kids has been enough distractions that it was hard to go back to the Paul Mckenna way of conscious eating when you want.

so this seemed like the perfect answer, and so far it is, i am losing slowly too, about 0.5 -1lb a week on average, which is perfect.....once I got my head around not losing as much as Michael Moseley!

also rediscovered chamomile tea and hot water with lemon! I allow myself one or two cups of tea with milk to stave off the caffeine withdrawal, but I'm drinking loads to fill me up.

second fast day this week, a super low cal soup for lunch, and I will cook some chicken with broccoli in a tomato sauce for supper tonight (adding rice for the children)

welcome lizlemon and frumperina enjoy the support here, it's great.

well done brigit excellent progress!

happpy fasting or normal eating days everyone.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 27/09/2012 10:38

Hi again and well done everyone who's losing weight or just feeling better!

I am on fast day again today but again only managed one so far this week (and prob won't manage any more now as it'll be the weekend). Finding it a bit tougher than sometimes though - I've not eaten yet but feeling quite hungry. Should be able to hold out till at least lunchtime though and then I've got a nice salad thing with prawns. Maybe I should get some herbal tea for work too, to help me keep going...

Apart from the fast days I am in a bit of a bad rut at the moment though, and have just ended up with a big box of chocolates as well Shock. Been eating fairly badly on my non-fast days (too many of the chocolates, and other snacks too - though some of it was due to TOTM which always has that effect), I haven't done any exercise in ages - partly as things have been very busy, but also lost my motivation a bit - and been going to bed waaaay too late. I need a kick up the backside or something!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 27/09/2012 10:46

also to captainmummy thanks for the linseed tip, is it in hot water or cold water? i eat loads of fruit and veg and the old apricots thing never works for me, best thing really is a hot and spicy curry, will have to have one tomorrow, going away to see my boyfriend up north for the weekend, so child free weekend, plus a catch up with my mummy, always good!

dandycandyjellybean · 27/09/2012 11:05

It's weird isn't it how random the 'finding it easy/hard' thing is. Today is my second fast day this week, was going to fast on Tues, but realised by 2pm on monday I hadn't had anything to eat, so figured I was half way there and did Monday instead, it was a breeze (perhaps because half the day hadn't been a fast iyswim)?

It's definitely becoming a way of life rather than a diet. My mate keeps asking me how much I've lost, and although at the beginning I was keen to document it I'm really not bothered, I can feel that I'm losing weight, I feel so much healthier, may weigh in a few weeks, but at the mo I'm not bothered.

Just booked 2 wks in the Canaries in December, which has also cheered me up no end Grin !!!!

Keep it up everybody, have a good day, fasting or eating.

lagartija · 27/09/2012 11:51

I'm fasting today...have had nothing so far and going to have a little lean chicken and loads of carrots for lunch. Second fast day this week. I've been doing it for a month (with a 10 day hiatus) and I've lost 7lbs. Feel fine today, did feel a bit hungry this morning but decided to fast as I'll be eating out a bit this weekend.

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 11:56

Well, I'm not lightheaded! Even though I was running up the high street at one point today when i was late. I got the kids ready for school and out the door on two black coffees (wasn't hard). The bowl of all bran I usually eat wasn't missed. Then I went for coffee with two friends except I had herbal tea. I said I had a dodgy tummy. I knew I'd be murdered if I said I was on a diet. Later, i had my legs waxed and it was only when I was up on the table I felt a bit hungry. The waxing lady could see my flab in all its glory so I told her my crazy plan. Then I had to drop a key into my mum and i finally finally had my oatbran muffin. home now. feel ok. the oat bran muffin expands in your tummy so 140 calories down. Oh, i've had two sticks of celery as well.

LizLemon007 · 27/09/2012 11:58

Wow, lagartija, good results!! I have never managed to get under 125lbs. Just hasn't happened for me in years. So I am hoping that this will do it for me.

mommybunny · 27/09/2012 12:17

Hi all, lots to catch up on and lots of new joiners and lots of great progress, well done all. My lingering cough turned last night into a full blown 38 degree fever. I emailed into the office that i wouldn't be coming in and have been sleeping on and off all morning. God I feel rough!

Today was meant to be a fast day anyway and I've decided to keep it one. DH is making me some scrambled eggs for lunch. Later I am supposed to be baking for a bake sale/Macmillan Coffee Morning at DS's school tomorrow, not sure I will manage it.

Happy fasting/feasting everyone!

Lakota · 27/09/2012 12:44

Hello, I've been giving this a try for the last 6 weeks or so and I'm pleased with the results so far. I'm not sure if I'm doing it entirely 'properly' as I don't calorie count - how can you work it out properly with home-made food? - but I hoped I could join in with the thread.

I still drink my decaf coffee (with milk) on fast days and have chosen Mon and Thurs as days where I don't have any breakfast or lunch as my DSs are at school and won't notice I'm not eating. I don't want them to know about this as I don't want them to have any inkling of diets and want them sticking to 3 proper meals a day. Then I have proper home cooked dinner in the evening. It may be over or under 500 calories but I figure it balances out in the end. I am now averaging 10st 1lb when I weigh myself rather than 10st 7lb when I started. I'd really like to be more like 9st 10.

Usually I've not been finding I get too unbearably hungry but today I've made the mistake of chewing some gum. It seems to have woken my stomach up - has anyone else found this?

Lakota · 27/09/2012 12:47

The weight loss might not be dramatic, but it is steady, which I reckon is a good thing? I should mention I suppose that I'm 5' 6", so not really overweight to begin with, but definitely flabbier than I'd like.

2012fan · 27/09/2012 12:51

Oh my word fasting was hard yesterday! First one of the 11 that I've been in the house all day - but I did it!! Very pleased with myself and having fish & chips (& Wine) tonight to celebrate. Only had 400 cals today so far so lots to play with.

BrigitBigKnickers you'll have to change your name soon! Smile

GreenEggsAndNichts · 27/09/2012 13:03

Lakota I reckon steady is a very good thing. :) It's all about being able to sustain the way of eating, imo. Also, one person might lose at a faster rate than another, but that person might be starting at a higher weight, so if you're really keen to compare it's better to compare % of body weight lost versus actual pounds. (I'm so dull! Grin)

Fast day here. I just had some coffee. I did also have a Beechams hot drink thing this morning as damn but this chest thing isn't going away. I've even figured out the calories in the amount of sugar in the packet, though, that's just how pedantic I am on a fast day. :) (15, btw, in case anyone is wondering!)
