The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I am trying to find the right words in English, but I believe it is a natural part almost like a detox and does it have something to do with ketosis?

TalkinPeace2 · 26/09/2012 20:27

Try hot water with a couple of slices of lemon in it - like a weak tea.
But basically if your taste buds have been used to lots of sweet things they are going to be in rather a state of shock for a few weeks!

poachedeggs · 26/09/2012 20:50

Thanks very much, GreenEggs your post reminding me that I DO NOT want another bloody fast day tomorrow did the trick! I've had a cup of tea to keep me going and I've got an article to write then I'm off to bed.

I don't feel great but today was rotten. I'd planned a nice lunch of prepacked leafy salad with dressing but it was totally foul. "Truly Irresistible" my arse. I had a packet of Quavers for the same calories, and a fruit salad for lunch. Dinner was going to be crab sticks (12 calories a piece, bingo!) and a couple of slices of Nimble. But instead I had this (delicious, but so not worth the pain) piece of cake pressed upon me and I was like a rabbit in the headlights, not wishing to disclose my weird diet habits to the office but also really not wishing to ruin my day ... but I ate it and I've felt crap ever since. And hungry.

OK moan over.

I put on weight over the weekend and after a failed fast day last week but it's cool. I also haven't managed any exercise for a week Shock so tomorrow I do something. For now I am dreaming about breakfast ... peanut butter and jam on toast ... a huge bowl of muesli ... pancakes ... a bacon and tomato butty ... or poached eggs (obviously a favourite).

Mmmmmmmmmbreakfast .....

Laska42 · 26/09/2012 21:00

Poached eggs I don't really eat cake(I don't actually like sweet stuff much) , but sometimes the 'you are so weird' thing gets to me and I take it.

But then i say 'ill have it later on /after i've done/eaten so and so, or with my next cup of coffee .... THEN when no ones looking ...secrete it into my bag and in the bin later .. always leaving a few crumbs on the desk .. 'Oh yes it was lovely thanks' ! Is that weird .. ? ,.

Ok I know it is , but then the feelings don't get hurt and I don't have to eat it either..

Also i've found that people do love to sabotage a diet .. havent you? Be sneakier than them !!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 26/09/2012 21:01

thanks pookey passed the test, just! Thank god though.

Might change fast day from tomorrow to Friday depending how today goes, clearly need to eat before 7pm, was not a good lesson to learn!

worldcitizen · 26/09/2012 21:20

Also i've found that people do love to sabotage a diet .. havent you?

So true, which is no-one knows other than the MN gang Grin

poachedeggs · 26/09/2012 21:48

"I don't really eat cake" WHAT?!

Send me some of that please!

pookey · 26/09/2012 22:09

Girlwithmouseyhair that's amazing well done you!

ah is the lemon to counteract the metal TP2?
Worldcitizen I think you might be right after your posy I looked up ketosis and think I have been experiencing quite a few of these signs of ketosis:

?sweet, fruity or metal taste in the mouth
?strong smelling urine
?reduced appetite
?elimination of food cravings
?feelings of well being or euphoria
?mental clarity
?increased energy
?increased thirst

Is it good or bad to have ketosis?

Def beware of diet sabouters(Sp?)

mistlethrush · 26/09/2012 22:30

Managed 2nd fast day (with day in the middle) today quite happily - although I ate a carton of soup for lunch as I was in a rush leaving this morning- then was out and didn't manage to eat until 9pm when I had some cucumber and 3 large tomatoes and a bit of tofu with basil in a salad. Will wait and see how things go for the rest of the week but not going to eat too much (fingers crossed)

Satay · 27/09/2012 00:21

Just a thought - those who do eat stuff like chocolate cake (which I saw someone wrote earlier today) on their normal days, do you not think it will make the next fast day even more difficult? One of the reports I read before starting my plan recommended not "eating whatever you want" on the normal days but cutting out (or down on) cakes, bread and junk food. I understand the occasional treat but seems some people are doing fast days then go on to binge on heavy carbs, fatty and sugary foods which seems pointless...? I also read a few blogs also saying the same thing, feasting on cakes on the normal day, then complaining that there's no weight-loss. I have a really sweet tooth myself so I know it's tricky! :)
Weekly weigh in for me tomorrow....

GreenEggsAndNichts · 27/09/2012 01:15

Satay I think moderation is key really. If people want to cut out sweets, bread, carbs etc, they certainly can.

I'm not sure it's accurate to say people are "bingeing" on items when we've no idea how big of a portion they consumed. When I say I'm excited I ate cheese the other day, it's not like I sat and ate the entire block. :) I actually only ate a very small amount, because that is what satisfied me. But previously I might have eaten quite a bit more. The links in the OP comment on people eating things such as cheeseburgers etc on non-fast days. Is it ideal in a healthy world? I guess not, but they still lost weight.

I do also allow myself biscuits, or cake, but again I'm not overdoing it and certainly not consuming them in large, binge-like quantities. Actually, I don't think I've had any biscuits this week. I just finished a non-fast day and I don't think I ate any sweets, aside from some apricots. Shock But like people in the articles said, the whole idea that I could have biscuits if I wanted them is what makes this, psychologically, an easy way of eating for me.

I think for many of us, we're doing this particular diet because it doesn't require use to limit ourselves to certain foods. We can do it that way, and it might be the only way that it works for some people, but for some of us it works just fine without the limitations.

I often avoid saying what I eat on non-fast days because I know everyone here has their own opinions of what is healthy food and what isn't. All I can say it, I've lost a lot of weight and I'm very pleased with my progress. If I get to the point where I'm not losing weight anymore, I will consider restricting my diet further. At the moment, though, I enjoy making homemade pizza dough for my family, I enjoy being able to eat some with them (again, nowhere near the quantities I might have eaten before), and well, I'm just really enjoying this WOE.

OP posts:
pookey · 27/09/2012 01:18

Satay I mentioned eating chocolate cake but it was one cake ( not even a cupcake a fairy cake really Wink ) I had less than 1500 cals that day so def not a binge. I want to eat more healthily but baking is fun too.

Satay · 27/09/2012 02:02

Ah OK, thanks for your comments! :) Things do come across differently on these posts and I hope I didn't sound mean...? But seriously, on another blog I read, the people following this diet were eating pure junk on their "feast days" then complaining that they felt crappy.
I'll also confess, I am a Brit but currently in Hong kong, hence my posts in the middle of your night! First thing in the morning here....

catsrus · 27/09/2012 02:10

I'm another one who can happily leave cake - I've found very few that I really enjoy. Our office is a bit cake obsessed Grin but I just say I'm not really keen on cake "but if you put a pate of chips there I'd find it hard to resist" I'm also unable to resist meringue and proper Christmas cake.... So everyone knows I'm not really a cake person - but on my own birthday I made sure it was a non fast day and I brought in a nice fruit cake (as well as chocolate cake) and had a bit of that Smile. That's what's so wonderful about this WOE!

ThinkICan · 27/09/2012 04:15

Started 4:3 a month back after getting inspired by all your posts. Lost 9 pounds but am still at BMI 30 - obese category. Worried about BP which is 147/90, which is mild hypertension, bad news for someone whose parents were both taking BP medication. I'm 58 years old and would like to get my BP down naturally without drugs in a couple of months before seeing my doctor who will put me on drugs for the rest of my life! Any of you lifesavers who can throw me a line and tips? I maintain a document where I paste inspiring comments and tips from all of you that I dip into every day! Thanks to all of you.

ThinkICan · 27/09/2012 04:17

Greeneggs and Laska - you are my particular angels!

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 27/09/2012 04:33

No idea on tips etc but sounds like you're doing brilliantly ThinkICan. Is the blood pressure reading a very recent one or could it have changed recently? No idea about that kind of thing but honestly that weightless ounds amazing, well done you

Satay · 27/09/2012 04:35

Hi ThinkIcan, I found these online which have some eating tips re blood pressure:
www.mayoclinic.com/health/high-blood-pressure/HI00027
and
www.bloodpressureuk.org/BloodPressureandyou/Yourlifestyle/Eatingwell
Good luck!

Weigh in today - lost another kg!

ThinkICan · 27/09/2012 06:02

Thanks Girl and thanks Satay for the tips and the good wishes. I have so much weight to lose I guess the body is shedding it in a hurry. Though from prior dieting experiences the weight loss will plateau or come back soon! I also have an underactive thyroid for which I am taking Thyronorm 50mcg (Levothyroxine sodium). I'm hoping that with your tips and moral support, I'll be able to manage my health at the pre-disease level! Look forward to tips from others as well and good luck to all those who are on the Health Forever IF path :)

ThinkICan · 27/09/2012 06:03

Oh and Satay, the BP has been borderline whenever I check. So the tendency is very much there and has to handled by a change in lifestyle which is what I hope IF will provide.

poachedeggs · 27/09/2012 06:13

:) Think, my mum sorted hers out by weight loss and loads of walking. No meds required in the end

ThinkICan · 27/09/2012 06:23

Was Googling Ryvitas LizLemon and came upon this amusing piece by a guy who calls himself a diet bore and says he is obsessed with Ryvitas which he calls 'tasteless, meaningless, chipboard rectangles '. But he's lost over a stone in 2 months - like all annoying men! www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2167347/Pass-Ryvita--Ive-diet-bore.html is the link.

Satay · 27/09/2012 07:11

Think, it's a Daily Mail article, not to be taken seriously! ;)
I think the sesame Ryvitas actually taste good! Though of course better with some cream cheese & Marmite....

Thelittlestranger · 27/09/2012 07:30

Survived fast day yesterday, although I was chomping at the bit in the evening. Ended up with a yoghurt, which inky took me to apprx 530 cals, so satisfied with that. I don't need to do another fast day until next Monday now, but will see how I feel with four feed days on the trot...I may have a 24 hour fast instead on the weekend...

I'm on my 4th week (weigh in tomorrow) and I've found that the only week I haven't lost is when I did more drinking than usual. But I have cut out a lot of sweet things, purely because I've lost the taste for them - and by not eating any, I hope to discourage the taste coming back!

Good luck to all fasting today...

BelinaTheChicken · 27/09/2012 07:31

Have you tried the sweet Ryvitas? They are so good.

5th fast day yesterday, and now that the novelty has worn off I did struggle towards the end. It didn't help that all the roast chicken leftovers were in the fridge, including sausage meat stuffing. Was so close to going in a eating the lot, so instead I got a load of freezer bags, weighed out 100 calorie portions of chicken for me, and portions of chicken and stuffing for the DC and shoved it all in the freezer. Problem solved, I didn't break my fast and I have easy meals in the freezer for the DC. I even froze the leftover mash.

Going to make a stock with the bones today so I can make more soup for my fast days, should really have done it yesterday but couldn't cope with too much time in the kitchen without eating something Grin
