The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Didn't know that.LBY - yet another good reason to splash on the Franks (as if I needed one Grin..) I also think that if you are not having a great deal of food then its also good to add flavour where you can. I have lots of chopped fresh coriander or parsley in my omelette and also black pepper, fresh herbs and often garlic in my veggies later on...

LookBehindYou · 26/09/2012 15:30

I haven't tried the Franks sauce Laska but might have to since you've given it such a cheer leading endorsement!

Laska42 · 26/09/2012 15:40

Grin no connection to me apart from the fact they'd probably go under without me! Grin.. They do the 'red hot' in most places but I recommend the 'extra hot' (Its not that hot) .. They sell it in Sainsburys I'm told ( but not my local one here so I buy it from Scorchio website .. well recommended for chilli lovers )

frenchfancy · 26/09/2012 15:43

Interesting you say that about chilli, I don't normally like too much spice, but on fast days I have found myself adding tabasco to my soup. It stops me eating it too quickly, and I can only take too much heat so when I'm finished I feel sated. I didn't know there was any science behind it though, I thoug it was just me.

BurningBright · 26/09/2012 15:47

Blimey! This thread moves fast! Shock Out of the office for two days and the new thread is up to 18 pages.

Had my third fast on Monday, having my fourth on Thursday, weighing in on Friday. Going fine so far thoug. Fast days have not been a problem and even on non-fast days I find I'm eating really healthily.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 26/09/2012 17:14

Hi all, so a non fast day or me (I only work Mon/Wed/Thur, and that's usually when i check on here - any other single parents find they have more time at work than at home?)

arived at work starving (been up since 6.30 with nothing to eat and drink) so made plain porridge with skimmed milk and added a mashed banana, 2 cups of tea, and then by 11 I could resist no longer - i ate one of teh cake pops i made yesterday......yes i ridiculously decided to branch out from my usual cupcakes and big cakes to try out cake pops - ON A FAST DAY!!!!!!

crazy, all last night my lodger - who is tall, skinny and supermodel gorgeous, scoffed 3 and kept telling me how amazing they were, but I resisted!

but I ate one at 11, then I bought a very yummy covent garden bowl soup sweet potato and coconut, which was only 250 cals, but then also had a quarter of a brie and cranberry sandwich (leftovers from work function) and then I've eaten 2 pieces of galaxy caramel........

anyway the reason for my long and boring list of what I have eaten, was to say that I got a bit paranoid that i was massively overeating, by way of snacking, and I would be blowing all yesterdays good work, but, I have now added up, with the aid of calorie counter app, and actually I've still only had 1110 cals, so I should just chill out!

So, I can relax, go home, eat supper with my monkeys, and all will be fine, so long as I eat no more delicious cake pops!

2nd fast day of the week tomorrow, 8th week of fasting.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 26/09/2012 17:16

ps. sorry if TMI, but is anyone else getting constipated?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 26/09/2012 17:21

mumofcrazy (just wanted to shorten your name to that! Grin )

In one of our previous threads, we did mention the dreaded TMI- constipation. I think apricots were suggested by at least one person. All I can say it, it helps to keep up your fruit/veg and be sure to keep hydrated. I sometimes have a problem with it, but not too often now really.

poachedeggs · 26/09/2012 17:55

I'm sorry, I haven't contributed for ages, but I need help! My 250 calories I'd set aside for dinner were obliterated by a forceful public offering of birthday cake and now the DC are having boiled eggs for dinner and I'm wavering ... Just posting for distraction!

captainmummy · 26/09/2012 18:00

Laska and other chilli-heads - I remember Nigella saying that when she's on a diet she needs strongly flavoured foods tomake her feel as though she 'eaten', IYSWIM..

I put chilli sauce on almost everything too, jamaican style.

Crazynamekids - try a couple of teaspoons of linseed/flaxseeds (same thing) with a pint of water. Or lots of hot black tea (I drink green or Roiibos tea, black no sugar)

GreenEggsAndNichts · 26/09/2012 18:10

poached you've made it this far in the day! You don't want to have to start all over again for a fast day tomorrow, do you? :)

OP posts:
Laska42 · 26/09/2012 18:36

poached do what I did yesterday ..make a pot of tea and go and sort your wardrobe out .. Dcs can 'help'? you'll be so distracted then you'll forget about food

rachelblythe · 26/09/2012 18:42

I just ordered a pack of 6 shiritaki noodles from Amazon, thanks for the link. For that have already eaten them, what is your recommended way of cooking? I have read a few styles, dry frying them sounding the most favourable to me so far.

Fast day for me. Had left over stew for lunch (just the veg and gravy) and a soup for dinner. I think I'm actually closer to 600 rather than 500 but as I'm starting to think about a maintenance plan, rather than weight loss, I'm happy with the cals.

worldcitizen · 26/09/2012 18:55

FAST DAY TODAY!!!!!!!

Woke up not hungry, had green tea and water all day and then in the afternoon had 1 apple and 1 yoghurt (natural without anything)

Came home from work and bought corgette, mushrooms, red pepper, spring onions and cauliflower on the way....all prepared in broth with fresh seasoning and fresh parsely and ate it with rice....

After one small portion I am so stuffed and I think I must have at least 4-6 more servings left....

Not hungry and lots of energySmile Thanksto all for the kick up the behindGrin

Laska42 · 26/09/2012 19:01

YAY!!! to WC !! You did it ..Grin ... I would suggest an early night with tea and a book if you can ....take it easy this evening ..Don't worry if you feel hungry later.. it wont get worse ..... You can eat in the morning

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 26/09/2012 19:01

Oh god yesterday fast day going fine, got a bit ratty later on in the afternoon, but then crashed and burnt in the mayhem of dinner, bath, bed, had two coffees and two fags in quick succession and promptly threw up everywhere. Couldn't face my veggie miso soup for dinner so just went to bed so think I ended up only having about 200kcal, horrid.

Exhaustion, not eating a bigger meal til much later, heavy drinking the previous few nights maybe? Now waiting to do my driving test and feel weak and awful

Sad
Laska42 · 26/09/2012 19:05

Rachel i've not tried then yet either but have ordered some today..did you see that some reviews are saying they can smell a bit 'fishy' when you open them but are ok once rinsed in water? ..

I thought id probably put mine in soup or in stir fry with a sauce of some sort .. maybe black bean? would need to check the calories of black bean though

BrigitBigKnickers · 26/09/2012 19:08

Can anyone tell me what to do about this awful taste in my mouth?- tea makes it worse and I am craving something sweet just to get rid of it.

Had some smoked salmon with a salad for tea so not hungry but have no calories left for today.

pookey · 26/09/2012 19:10

girlwith how awful. Nerves I was sick before my first driving test. When is the test?

wow world citizen that sounds uber healthy.

I was scuppered by cake I made too mumofcrazy. DP got me to make a large birthday srtyle one for his work. I had a tiny bit of the leftovers he brought home, mainly to see what it tasted like. Think I had 650 today quite a bit was milk in tea and coffee. bit disappointed

worldcitizen · 26/09/2012 19:10

Thanks Laska i really feel very wonderful, strange enough as I had a lot to do today, but feel like going to have a relaxing shower soon and I think your suggestion is great, I am actually in the midst of reading an 'Anne Enright book', so I will do this and turn off lights whenever I feel eye lids getting heavy even if it is much earlier than usual...

Thanks all, I was so worried, but all the motivation helped. I am not sure, if I will leave it at that for this week OR if I simply decide Friday or Saturday to have another go, will let my feeling and body decide...

pookey · 26/09/2012 19:11

Brigit I have funny taste thing too.

ThatBintAgain · 26/09/2012 19:34

I had the taste thing too - weirdly it was worse on a feed day last week. (Only started doing this last week so hoping that won't happen again!) It was a bit like pine mouth if you've ever had it - but it went the next day. Horrible though, and don't know why it happens?!

Have got through today on just soup but then had a handful of peanuts so hoping that I haven't totally buggered up today's efforts?

worldcitizen · 26/09/2012 19:53

pookey and how did it taste?

pookey · 26/09/2012 19:59

the other day it was a metalic taste today its kind of like my tongue is prickly!

rachelblythe · 26/09/2012 20:00

Laska, yes i read about the fishy smell and to give them a good rince first, thanks though. I too was thinking about a stir fry,i guess it is the obvious first choice. Although maybe with some fish and broccoli might be nice too, with soy sauce or chilli. I was looking at the noodles on Amazon a few days ago but was initially put off by the price got one pack, about £8 with delivery,.and was reluctant to buya pack of 6 in case i don't like them. Oh well, they are ordered now and I'm hoping they arrive Friday as suggested, will be useful to have for a fast day.
