The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

liz I buy mine in Holland and Barratt but in supermarkets will be with the oriental foods or health foods (in Sainsburys its with the foreign speciality ingredients bit) . You can get dried sachets like cup a soup , but I prefer the Clearspring brown rice miso in the jar.. keeps ages in the fridge .. 1 teaspoonful is enough in a mug and 20 cals

2012fan · 26/09/2012 12:28

I too liked the 'secret society' post, especially the bit '..it's fun and I like it..' An unheard of comment for a diet!! Love the pigs Laska.

Am having a fast day today - the first so far on a day off work, but want fish & chips tomorrow! Finding it harder than usual but have done a Laska and sorted out my clothes and done some chucking out including a size 36E bra which I've held on to thinking I may need it again. Haven't weighed since Saturday but then had lost 6lbs in 4 1/2 weeks.

Off to have some soup. Made a batch of veg soup on Sunday and froze in portions. Strangely although Sun was an eating day and I had lots of lovely food in the fridge, all I fancied was the soup! So that's what I had (but with some bread & butter Grin)

RightBuggerforGOLD · 26/09/2012 12:44

frumperina No it won't affect bf. I looked into this before starting as I exclusively bf ds (11 weeks) who is a massive chunk and doing very well!

Hi to all the newbies! My top tip is make things easy for yourself. So if you like to cook, get low cal recipies ready, or cook loads and freeze in portions for fast days. If you are not a cook, get some ww ready meals, nimble bread, tinned/cuppa soup in. So you plan what you'll have to make the most of your calories. Also any big craving you have, don't worry about it, you can have it tomorrow!

I love the badges! Feed day for me and I have just enjoyed some chocolate, yum. On 4:3,so another fast day tomorrow.

Laska42 · 26/09/2012 12:45

drinking miso soup and its a feed day! .. I love it..

Thina · 26/09/2012 12:46

Afternoon all.

Guilty: It was me who ate the French Fries (but it wasn't a fast day Blush.
And also me who said it's like a secret society, and I like all the suggestions for badges Grin.

On a fst day today but am s-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o tired as I am not sleeping very well and having really bad nightmares. So am going to see how I get on today, but so far so good. As someone earlier said, it's last fast day until next week so I will keep that in mind.

BIWI · 26/09/2012 12:53

Just to say - I'm not doing 5:2, but I'm trying intermittent fasting, and today and yesterday I had pretty brutal hour-long sessions at the gym (with my trainer) and managed both sessions as well as I do normally, despite the fact that I hadn't eaten.

If you're ketogenically adapted, i.e. you are in fat-burning mode, it makes sense that it would be OK, as the body will use its fat stores for fuel rather than any food you've just eaten.

TalkinPeace2 · 26/09/2012 13:12

Out for Chinese last night and STILL down another pound this week .... 8 since the start of term.
And DH - he who refused to cut calories EVER - now is happy to go to 4:3 as its making him feel better in himself ....

Satay · 26/09/2012 13:17

Thina, so you also sleep badly and get nightmares - me too! I was confused because so many people are saying they sleep well on this regime....

Laska42 · 26/09/2012 13:28

I'm not sure about nightmares ... though have had some vivid dreams lately .. but yes... sometimes I'm sleeping badly too .. .. it tends to happen though if i don't eat enough on food days - which I can find easily happens as my appetite is a lot less..

LizLemon007 · 26/09/2012 13:34

right. back from tesco and i have my fish sticks, rasberries, celery, porridge, diet yoghurts, low cal beans. I have too much really, I have to have a think about what I'm going to eat and then write it down in advance.

350 grams of celery only has 50 calories
and 250 grams of rasberries only 70 calories! can that be right?!

TalkinPeace2 · 26/09/2012 13:34

satay and thina
are you making sure you drink enough water - a large glass before you go to bed, or even better save some calories for a glass of milk....

mommybunny · 26/09/2012 13:35

OK, I'm stuffed now. Had a "Mediterranean falafel" from the local Pilpel - yum! While it had plenty of falafel and hummus and a pita I couldn't finish, it also had lots of raw veg salad like grated carrots, red and white cabbage, tabbouleh etc. Oh and I can't forget the fried aubergine slices Blush - I almost forgot because I scarfed them immediately upon getting back to my desk and it was a long time ago.

But by god it was tasty. Will keep me going for the rest of the day, at least till dinner...

2012fan · 26/09/2012 14:02

Isn't 5:2 intermittent fasting? Confused

mommybunny · 26/09/2012 14:07

Yes 2012fan, 5:2 is a form (a subset, if you like) of intermittent fasting, like 4:3, 6:1 or ADF. BIWI may be doing intermittent fasting with a different schedule, or no schedule at all - just whenever she fancies it.

BIWI · 26/09/2012 14:10

Yep - I'm just missing out breakfast when I feel able to - and sticking to low carbing rather than calorie restriction, so a slightly different regime (although ultimately, cutting out breakfast will also cut down on calories, I suppose!)

BrigitBigKnickers · 26/09/2012 14:24

Ok I am struggling today- onto my fourth fast day (last one was Monday) and about to chew the leg of the table despite having just had a poached egg, low cal beans and a small slice of granary bread. Trying to do a 4:3 this week but really don't think I am going to make it...

Had a few crab sticks and cherry tomatoes this morning.

Only got 150 cals left until tomorrow morning.Sad

I am feeling tired, light headed and fed up. Sad

I am coming to dread the fast days.

But on the plus side my trousers feel looser despite the scales not showing any loss yet.

Tell me this gets easier.

frenchfancy · 26/09/2012 14:30

Thina please accept my apologies - I thought you were eating french fries on a fast day Blush. On a non-fast day you go ahead and eat what you want (there is a slice of chocolate cake in my fridge with my name on it :) )

frenchfancy · 26/09/2012 14:32

Brigit - It does get easier, but I find it easier to cut out bread altogether. I was finding a small amount of bread, rather than filling me up, just made me want to eat more. And for one small slice of bread you can have a whole bowl of soup, or loads of veggies.

LizLemon007 · 26/09/2012 14:36

Tomorrow I'm going to eat
a homemade oat bran muffin - 140 cals
350 grams of celery - 50 cals
350 grams of rasberries 70 cals
small can of diet beans 150 cals
diet yoghurt 50 cals
and 3 fish sticks ! 45 cals!

LookBehindYou · 26/09/2012 14:39

Brigit I also suggest cutting out bread as much as possible and replace with veg. I would probably also not have the beans on fast days either. Try it and see if it makes you feel any better. A lot of this is trial and error. Are you drinking enough water?

LizLemon007 · 26/09/2012 14:44

can i ask, why no to the baked beans on a fast day? i thought they would be very filling for only 150 cals?

ThatBintAgain · 26/09/2012 15:10

Fast thread!

Hi pookey - to answer your questions from Mondays, I've got a stone to lose to get me to the top end of normal BMI and 2 stones to be happy with myself. Put a stone on in the last year after starting a desk job! I read your post from further up about the weight loss not necessarily kicking in for 3 weeks so that's quite reassuring, thanks for posting that!

Fasting again today - have decided to go with having a Covent Garden soup for lunch an hour ago and another later, comes in at 400 cals. I do feel like have been starving on feed days, although haven't really gone over 2000 cals. (quite a lot of those on Monday were Maltesers though! Blush )

Laska42 · 26/09/2012 15:10

We are all different, but typically I avoid the carby things, fruit, and anything sweet (tho that's easy for me .. no sweet tooth) on fast days but only because it just makes me hungrier quicker and I find it much harder .. but some others here have seemed to have managed fine with bread and beans etc.

My typical fast day FWIW is (its usually the same each time )

Breakfast .. An omelette made with 2 eggs , 1 slice of ham . a little butter and a couple of small tomatoes chopped up (and Franks extra hot sauce! ... Just adore chilli )

Black coffee , green tea , water with slice of lemon

Dinner (ate as early as poss.. often by 5pm ) - a small amount of plain cooked fish or chicken , (around 80 - 100g depending on how much veg I have) and veg like salad greens, broccoli, courgette, mushroom, spring onion .. done in anyway I fancy it , could be as salad, soup or stir fried in a little stock. Or a plate of broccoli (love broccoli) with a few prawns spring onion and soy sauce.. (and more Franks!)

A mug of miso soup (with Franks of course - I should buy shares ) if desperate (not usually)

I find this keeps me pretty stable as per hunger . Yesterday I didn't have my normal breakfast had veggies instead and at my meals really early... was pretty hungry in the evening , so probably wont do that again ..

BTW did you know that Thais etc ..eat a lot of chilli because its supposed to help keep hunger at bay ?

LookBehindYou · 26/09/2012 15:12

I wouldn't say 'no' to anything. I suggested it because Brigit said she felt shakey. I also actually read low calorie baked beans (might have made a mistake with that) and when I looked on the tin they had quite a bit of sugar and salt added. You can eat a huge amount of veg or veg soup for 150 cals.

LookBehindYou · 26/09/2012 15:17

Red chillis are full of vitamins too aren't they? Vitamin C, B vitamins, magnesium etc.
