Can a Mirena coil "fall out"?

I can't feel the strings any more. I went to see the nurse and she said that the strings were gone but not to worry she's sure it will still be there, but can it fall out?! Could it possibly just not be there and she thinks it is...?

Yes it can definitely fall out. Don't trust its still there. Ask for a scan to check where it is. When was it put in?

Its unlikely to have come out without you noticing. Mine was still in place but the strings had gone through the cervix so couldn't be found. It was found by ultrasound and xray

Yes it can! Think mine came out about 6 months ago (based on my periods returning to horrific levels). Scan confirmed it.
I had no idea other than periods returning

I asked if I needed a scan and the nurse said that I would need a scan when they take it out to determine where it is.

Just wondering how the hell the strings would have gone into my cervix...

@Bellie99 ah, so it can happen without one noticing?

Periods haven't returned so I'm hoping that means it is still in there!

Mine came out in the bath so I knew it was out but it definitely came out way easier that I would have expected!

Oh dear... seriously hoping that I haven't had a period because the coil is still in there, rather than because I'm pregnant! Is that even possible? Can you get pregnant straight after the coil if you haven't had a period?!

Pressuming you have done a pregnancy test? When mine fell out I had 3 episodes of a couple of hours of excruciating stomach cramps over the course of a month at least. I thought it was kidney stones or something. After 2 bouts I said I'd go to the GP if it happened again. The third time happened on a night out, I was sat at a house party borrowing a hot water bottle before going home. The pain just stopped all at once on the way. Went to the toilet when I got in and felt this odd painless dragging sensation, to discover one of the wires sticking out of me. I went to the family planning clinic with it (the mirena and one wire... I didn't realise there should be two) the next day and they said the cramping episodes will have been after it became dislodged and contractions trying to expell it.

No, I haven't POAS. Will get one tomorrow.

A bit freaked out that it can fall out now.

I've had 3 fall out without realising, it definitely happens! I don't have them anymore Grin

Has anyone got pregnant after one fell out?

I had the coil and got pregnant. No coil to be seen. Was told that sometimes the wires catch on a tampon and then the coil is pulled out with a used tampon !

Report
Nikhedonia · 09/05/2019 23:44

@PeachNut no tampons as no periods.

Genuinely wondering what could have pulled it out... Confused

Mine fell out too. Thank god I found it when I wiped or I'd never have known.

I have no idea how long it's not been there for (if it has fallen out) possibly 3/4 months...

Fuuuuuuuuuck

I got referred for ultrasound and told to take other precautions so took the mini pill until it was confirmed it was still there. I assumed it was still there as my periods hadn't come back.

Have they not referred you for ultrasound?

@dementedpixie
No, I asked about that and the nurse said that they will do a scan when it's due to come out (next Jan) to see where it is Confused she said no need to do one now. Pretty surprised by that now...

That makes absolutely no sense! You obviously want contraception. I'd definitely go back and get a scan. And definitely poas

NotANewUser2 · 10/05/2019 09:36

Shocking that she hasn’t referred you for a scan. If it has fallen out, you will be without contraception. If it’s dislodged, it could damage your uterus. I’d definitely be going back and asking for a referral!

I had a Marina coil for 9 years, changed once, they never fell out.

@Fixmygarden yes, definitely don't want another child right now!

Right, I'll give them a call and see what they say. I'll also pop and get a test on my lunch. FFS, really hope it isn't positive

Insist on a scan.

One thing I did find out that there is a v v v small chance that it could perforate you lining and end up in stomach. It is in the small print of the leaflet!,
