Starting off a new thread for 2025 now that both organisations have opened applications for next season!

sorry @wigeon, I didn’t mean to cause any offense to anyone by my questions. This is all new to us and we’re a little overwhelmed by terminology and the differences between the options. I had been told/ thought there were two levels of skills workshops depending on where you got to in the audition process and it’s not clear in our email invite today following the recall process, nor on their website which talks about skills courses being available to book having not gone to the audition workshops at all, which would imply open to people perhaps with no experience. We were also told that the invite only skills courses will be tailored to their specific development needs and I’m not sure how that happens if it’s open to people who haven’t gone through audition workshops? The residential skills courses we’ve been offered are also £800. To us that’s expensive if not tailored to their stage of development. Flying blind here!

@EweCee - can I ask how much the skills courses for auditionees invited to a casting workshop is? For DD who was not invited to a casting workshop, it's £800 for a residential skills course, so not exactly cheap.

I'm sure PP on this thread said those skills workshops are more advanced level.

Also not sure why an advanced level course offered to kids following the casting workshop would be more expensive than one that they offer to kids who didn't get a casting workshop. They still need to hire the venue, do a load of admin, provide food and all the pastoral support, pay all the tutors etc. Unless you think they pay tutors more to teach advanced skills than they pay them to teach less advanced?

Its exactly the same workshop in our case - £800.

Kittykat57 · 21/02/2025 23:26

Just wondered if anyone could help with some questions please. Any idea what the daily timings are for non residential new musical workshops in London are and how much they will be? It doesn't say on the website and my link still isn't working.

Also after re reading the information on the website it states that MOST new musical workshops are only available to those who take part in the casting auditions. Any ideas on which ones are offered to the public booking ? I had assumed you had to get to the recall stage to do a new musical workshop 🤷‍♀️ Thanks Hive mind.

Our residential Workshop is £900. Hmm

NicNack7 · 22/02/2025 00:53

DD got a NYMT workshop offer for Flip and show offer for Worn for BYMT.

She got a nonresidential skills course last year, so really looking forward to residential.

For anyone wondering whether to do skills courses, we’d def recommend the experience. She loved her’s last year and said she gained so much plus met lovely people. 💕
Congrats to everyone who has show offers too. Xx

I wonder if this refers to things like the one which got offered last October, at not very much notice... I know we were emailed about it, so perhaps they're just trying to be transparent as places may come up on things like that, or if there are drop outs etc

Mumster40 · 22/02/2025 07:09

Our residential new musical workshop is £900 too. Maybe it depends on where it’s held?

Has everyone heard back now?!

re. skills courses. We were offered an advanced residential one last year that we didn’t end up doing. The email said it was invite only and wouldn’t be offered to the public. But this was last year…..

I think there will be some movement with the new musical workshops this year. DC knows quite a few kids who can’t do the dates. So hopefully that might help those DC on here who need to swap!

Kittykat57 · 21/02/2025 15:49

Congratulations to everyone who has heard back with an offer. My DS has been offered Everyday but in May ( didn't realise there was another one in August)? I have only just realised it is based on a film which I have actually watched with my daughter before 😂.
Also can anyone shed any light as to what the difference is that it is in association with a production company unlike the other workshops listed!?!

Looking forward to hearing everyone else's good news later on today.

There isn't one again in August, we had a correction email from NYMT about 4 hours after the original offer. The one in August is Stagshaw Fayre, which is what my DD has now been offered. It's is a non-res musical workshop. I think the every day musical workshop is quite a big deal, as there was much excitement from my DD when she thought she was doing this one, she's read the book, and did feel a bit of a let down when the correction email came though. She will still be involved in Stagshaw, as it's still a great opportunity for her.

Truetoself · 22/02/2025 08:35

Does anyone have any idea how many people are in each show? Thing about this field is that whether you have a main role or in ensemble, you devote the same amount of time and in this case, momey.

Those whose DC have done an ensemble role before, did they still feel as though it was a worthwhile experience?

doesanybodyhaveamap · 22/02/2025 09:01

There are usually 25-30 performers in each show, so small casts.

To the NYMT newbies that haven't seen an NYMT production before, rest assured this is not your regular holiday time youth theatre production. It might feel like a lot of money but the kids get 3 weeks of intense, professional training from world class professionals. And around that, those same professionals are putting in weeks of their time preparing the productions.

Every role has been meticulously cast, so even if your child 'only' has an ensemble role, there was something about them that fit that production and role. It's no less in an experience than playing a lead (and with so few lead roles on offer and the ridiculous levels of talent and competition, only a small
minority will get those roles!).

All will become clear when you see your first show and your kid comes back from their first year with NYMT having found their tribe and forever changed!

6th season over here, musician and performer with a whole range of outcomes from no recall through to cast in 2 shows. Has played in the pit every year too. I promise every single experience is worth it.

@Mumofteens20 I thought they had changed the date when I received the second email - DD has end of year exams the week following May half-term so wanted that week kept free. She was happier with Stagshaw Fayre.

Off to last audition this morning at Mountview for the musician workshop.

good luck for todays workshop. Think our two must of met before, did yours do the WIGU concert in 2023? I'm sure they'll have a blast doing Stagshaw. Yeah mine has A levels starting in May, probably not the best timing for a full on workshop just before. She's very excited for her summer now 🤩

Are you asking about the summer productions or the new musical workshops? For the workshops I think every participant's contribution is valued and valuable because it's a new show. Sometimes they even work on different parts of the show and different people play the leads in each. They are trying things out and exploring, for example, which interpretation of a character works better, or even what sort of age they might be. It's not necessarily helpful to think in terms of leads and ensemble because everyone is as much a part of the team as each other.
In fact, that's true of the summer productions too. My DS has done everything from small part to lead role, to part of large ensemble. The latter was for The Hunchback of Notre Dame in Manchester Cathedral. It was a large cast because they needed to make a phenomenal sound in that space, and they absolutely did. Remains one of our favourite NYMT experiences regardless of size of role. They learn as much as ensemble as they do as leads, and they are not sitting around with nothing to do unless they choose to have some downtime when not required to rehearse.
To answer your Q, I think each cast for the summer shows will have about 30 young people, apart from Carousel which might have slightly more because it's a different venue as I understand it.

yodaforpresident · 22/02/2025 09:16

@Mumofteens20 thank you, yes my DD did WIGU in 2023 - I think this must be what Crescendo is now? I would say they definitely do know each other, they were a lovely group and great shows too.

Summer is starting to fill up and looks like a lot of travel!

Truetoself · 22/02/2025 09:20

@doesanybodyhaveamap @Biscuitsneeded thanks for the input. I was asking about the ensemble for the summer show (DD offered Fame emsemble)

@Truetoself she will have an amazing experience 🤩

In a reflective mood this morning. Just wanted to say, it's not just the kids that benefit from being part of the NYMT family. Over the last 6 years, initially through these threads, but later on other platforms and even in person, I've developed the most wonderful network of NYMT parent friends who are my support group as we navigate raising our young performers. Some of these people i consider the truest of friends (@Biscuitsneeded I'm looking at you!) always there with a much needed reality check when it gets tough. We back each other's kids, and share their highs and lows. I will be forever grateful for that. I think this is something quite special about NYMT.

Hi all
Nymt castings workshops 2025
Has anyone heard back from the castings workshops that took place last Saturday 15th Feb - 18th Feb.?
If not how long does it usually take before they get back to you with either an offer or rejection .
The anticipation is driving me mad
Thanks guys

Absolutely. She will have the best time in the ensemble. My DS has done ensemble,
supporting role and a lead. All are extremely
valuable experiences and he wouldn’t have secured a place at his dream drama
school for this Sept without them

Well, only you can decide really if you want to spend the money. But if your DC is at the younger end of age range for this show, believe me they have done exceptionally well and it's a great opportunity to work with that creative team and be on their radar ahead of professional training and/or career, if that's the direction your DC wants to take. I think it's 99.9% likely your DC will have the best summer of their life so far. I also think they will make contacts and friends who will be their industry peers at a later stage. The leads in Fame are most likely older, and possibly already in professional training at top schools. People want to be in NYMT shows because they are such high quality, as well as being a hugely fun experience - you probably can't get that quality anywhere else apart from drama school shows. But only you know your budget and how much you value that experience vis a vis something local, or a pre- vocational course, or even a holiday! Needless to say I know what my DS would have done at the age with that offer but I appreciate everyone is different.😀

Check your junk as offer emails went out yesterday! If you haven't got anything, possibly something has gone astray so do get in touch with NYMT via the enquiries email address.

Mine too. I can't list all the specific things NYMT has done for my DS without outing him completely, but life- changing is a word you sometimes hear about NYMT, and for him it's been absolutely true.

Kittykat57 · 22/02/2025 10:02

@Truetoself my DS was in ensemble last year and it was a wonderful experience for him. He was very busy, learnt so much from his peers who were leads and really developed a passion for MT. Hence why he is feeling the twang of disappointment now after a no for his 2 recalls. Yes- it is a financial investment but it really is the best training and worth every penny.

Especially hard to not get a show when they have been cast before isn't it x

Do they also contact you to let you know they wasn't successful or do they just not bother getting back to you and only contact the ones they've picked
Thanks all it's the very first time my granddaughter has auditioned for NYMT
