The rehearsal venue is Oswestry school and performance venue is Walker Studio Theatre, Theatre Severn. I'm totally clueless about UK geography. We live on a small island so only have limited places we can fly directly from so it's either Bristol or Manchester airport really.

Also do you know if they will transfer what I have paid for a summer camp over to the production? Don't think we can afford both.

Thank you for your help!

Comefromaway · 17/06/2021 18:27

It’s not exactly very close to Manchester!

DalekFan · 17/06/2021 18:31

Congratulations to your DD @feelinhopeful. That’s brilliant news. 😊

Is it north Shropshire (Shrewsbury/Telford) or south Shropshire (Ludlow)? Would she be using public transport or driving?

DalekFan · 17/06/2021 18:32

Sorry just seen your message!!

DalekFan · 17/06/2021 18:34

Oswestry is about 60 miles from Manchester airport. So not too far, but how would she be travelling?

feelinhopeful · 17/06/2021 18:49

@DalekFan we would ideally go by train if that's straightforward, otherwise we could hire a car? I'm totally clueless about all of this!

DalekFan · 17/06/2021 19:10

@feelinhopeful You can get a train from Manchester airport to Shrewsbury - the quickest route I think is changing at Crewe and takes about 1hr 40mins. Then you would get a train from Shrewsbury to Gobowen (nearest train station to Oswestry). That takes about 20mins. It’s then about 3 miles to Oswestry School. So it’s quite a journey. Driving would be quicker and easier.

Mcmumager · 17/06/2021 19:19

I’m sure i read somewhere if you booked a course it would be used towards the price of a show if then offered one.

feelinhopeful · 17/06/2021 19:42

@DalekFan that's really helpful, thank you so much.

@Mcmumager I thought I had read that somewhere too but can't find it now!

Mcmumager · 17/06/2021 19:45

“ If you do decide to book a Summer Camp and then get offered a place on a Production we will of course be able to transfer all fees paid across so they’re definitely worth looking into!”

Quitelikeacatslife · 17/06/2021 21:46

So my DS got offered a place on legend of the white bear. We had booked the summer course but he won't do both. We got a letter with details of the musical but Can anyone tell me more about the day to day things? Where do they sleep? Do they keep a good eye on them? Is all food included? Do they get their own room?
I have asked but would love your experiences please

feelinhopeful · 18/06/2021 10:10

@Quitelikeacatslife congratulations to your ds. I don't know the answers to your questions, I assume will be similar to the summer camp for rooms etc. hopefully someone else will have some more information for you.

Belshels · 18/06/2021 16:08

Congratulations to everyone with offers🎉
QuitelikeaCatslife. My dd did Paperboy in Belfast when she was 11, and I was very anxious beforehand, but felt as if she was very well looked after. Just before the trip you get the details and mobile no.for the head of Pastoral and you can let them know any concerns or special requests. I had a couple of calls while dd was there, from someone in the pastoral team, and they are fine for you to call them.

They were all in single rooms in 1 corridor (in a private college /school) but this may be different depending on the show. My dd had a chaperone in the room opposite, and was told she could knock anytime in the night if she was worried about anything.

All meals were provided, and they were allowed a maximum amount (about £30) for spending money, and think it might have been kept for them. They had little trips to the corner shop during rehearsals and when walking to and from the theatre.

They also were meant to take all the clothes they needed for the whole stay (and underwear) but the pastoral staff did do some washing for them if needed.

They rehearsed from 9 -9 I believe so long days but broken by lots of breaks and meals.

They also had a day off midway through, where they could go out with a chaperone somewhere in a group, or with parents. My dd and another boy went out with another girl and her parents for the day.

During the shows, I didn't get to see her afterwards as they went straight back to the accommodation, but we communicated by text and the odd phone all late at night when she wasn't too tired😊.

They also had a talent show just for fun one evening, and were taken out by the creatives on a little history tour of the area as it was all very relevant to the show.

She had the most amazing time... it was hard work, but there was a great camaraderie amongst the performers and she made some lifelong memories 💕

Quitelikeacatslife · 18/06/2021 17:26

Thank you that's great to know, he'll be 14 by then, so pretty independent but it is a long time. It will be amazing I am sure

Lonecatwithkitten · 20/06/2021 07:36

@Belshels my DD did A.L.I.C.E in 2019 they were housed in university accommodation flats for 6 all in one block. There were four chaps for thirty children the youngest children were in the ground floor flats with a chap in each flat. Boys all in one flat with a male chap. Top floor all 15,16,17 and 18 year old girls no chaps.
Breakfast was in their flat cereal, toast etc was provided. Other meals in main uni centre. They could go to the uni shop in the evenings, but had to have a chap with them.
There was no cap on pocket money DD just took her debit card. They went out to the Trafford Centre one day shopping, a meal and then either bowling or cinema.
The chaps were great one night the food provided by uni was awful so the chaps ordered in pizza.
There was a cabaret night and the creatives also took part.

Those whose parents attended a show were allowed into the foyer of the theatre after the show to see their parents and then back to the accommodation.
DD made really good friends and had a great time.

Belshels · 20/06/2021 10:48

That sounds amazing too! It's so lovely for them to have these special memories when they grow up💕

Anjoujo · 23/06/2021 10:51

Hello, what a lovely thread! My 15yo DD is on the reserve list still. We are new to this so not sure whether she is likely to get a show or not at this late stage. Thank you for any advice 😊.

Mcmumager · 23/06/2021 11:16

Hi @Anjoujo

When did your dd audition? My dd age 13 didn’t audition till May and is also on the reserve.

I wondered if reserves were selected based on scoring or when they were put on the list? I know some reserves were offered places last week.

My ds is doing Peter Pan and we’ve got a number of things on over the summer so it would be good to know soon - one way or another.

Anjoujo · 23/06/2021 11:39

Hi! My DD auditioned in Feb. Her friend was put on the reserve list in May and has now been offered a show. Just wondering whether to go ahead with other summer plans or whether to hold on and wait. It’s our first experience with the BYMT so not sure if she is likely to be placed or not by the stage. I wonder how many they have on the reserves? Thanks so much for any advice!

Vivalettre · 25/06/2021 14:07

Hi, I'm new to this thread and just wondering if anyone has heard anything from BYMT recently...? My DD auditioned earlier in June. I was hoping we'd hear by now as I really want to make other plans if she doesn't get in...! (I think they did the final auditions last w/e...)

DalekFan · 25/06/2021 16:54

Welcome @Vivalettre. I would imagine they are finalising offers for auditionees and reserve list, now that the final audition workshop has happened. If you haven’t heard anything by end of the weekend you could always call Frances?

Mcmumager · 25/06/2021 17:03

Hi there- I think Frances is moving on as Hannah Kipling is back from maternity leave. If you email Frances you get a message to contact Hannah.

Vivalettre · 25/06/2021 19:21

Thank you @DalekFan and @Mcmumager - good idea! I'll contact Frances / Hannah on Monday....

Biscuitsneeded · 27/06/2021 11:16

Well some of these residentials are starting quite soon. Has anyone heard anything more? I wonder if the Govt really do mean it that they don't intend to have restrictions after 19th, or whether there is more bad news coming in the light of rising cases? Part of me thinks they are tacitly accepting that letting young people get infected now is part of a move towards herd immunity. Whilst I can sort of see why that could work in schools, even though it will mean lots more disruption and repeated isolations unless the guidance changes, I am still worrying a lot (and I am not a worrier by nature!) about how this could affect our DC's shows. Surely if one company member tests positive the whole company will have to isolate, and the show will be scuppered? To me this is a huge risk - or am I missing/not understanding something? I feel like a Cassandra coming on here and foreseeing doom, but I just can't see how this is all going to work. Can anyone reassure me? I'm not worried about DS going - I really desperately want him to be able to - but I can't bear the thought of all our kids getting as far as rehearsals or even show week and then their shows getting pulled. Am I just being unnecessarily negative here?

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/06/2021 12:33

@Biscuitsneeded the previous information we had stated that negative tests will be required before joining the cast.
Yes there is a risk, but for me the risk is out weighed by the benefit of my DD performing again and the benefit for her mental health.
