Welcome to wet July (well it's wet here) and a new thread. This is the place where we can talk about all things musical, like music lessons, exams, practice and new instruments. I am a music teacher (woodwind) and have two daughters. Goo is 10 and her first instrument is recorder, although on paper, flute has now caught up. She plays flute in NCO Under 11s, has just received the difficult bits she's meant to work on, so is finally cracking on with sorting out her piccolo. She started piano lessons at Easter and is going fast, currently playing Grade 3 pieces, and working through the Grade 2 sight reading and Dozen a Day books. Rara is 8 and far less keen - we are still currently trying to figure out what she really enjoys so that we can encourage her. But for now, she's learning the recorder and cello, and is between Grade 2 and 3 on both.

Goo did her flute exam on June 23rd, and now won't have any until at least March, or next June if I can push for that. Rara will probably do Grade 3 Recorder at Christmas. I have had a quiet exam term for my pupils - 7 altogether. 4 are already safely through (3 merits and a distinction), we are awaiting results for a Grade 6 Theory, and I have a couple of clarinettists still to go on Monday.

My theory result is just in, after just 3 weeks and 6 days, which is a record. Thanks, ABRSM! It used to take 6 weeks. Anyway, my young man with autism... PASSED HIS GRADE 6!!!! I wasn't overly hopeful, as a lot depends on the day, and he ofter doesn't read the whole question. He needed two attempts at grade 5 a while back, but did work hard for this. He got 61% on his final practice paper, and 67% on the day. I am more pleased about this than I have been when pupils who find it easy have sailed through with distinctions. It's a fitting conclusion to his many years of lessons with me (piano, theory and composition) as he is now 20 and off to university in the autumn.

Hoping all the other theory candidates hear tonight, and good luck for the results.

Well done Waffle! Have texted miniprada's teacher so let's see what happened.

Green- we'll find out if our DC were right to spend under an hour in the room! Eeek!

Got to say, not holding my breath....

drummersmum · 15/07/2016 19:56

Enb76 fingers crossed. Sometimes boredom is an issue at home but not in the exam itself due to adrenaline...
waffle fab news, well done teacher!
Prada and other waiting for results, good luck!

Loving the hols here, we're at home, seeing friends, sorting out domestic things (vacuum cleaner broke aarrrjjj), going to the movies and theatre,
DS is practising 2-3 hours a day - making full use of the scales and arpeggios bags I prepared for both piano and marimba...took me an hour... But he's thanked me like a hundred times sweet thing. In a week's time he's starting a music course with friends.

Thank you. Wish you have a result you wanted too Prada.
I must say this time she impressed me (a little) as I wasnt expecting a (just about) distinction as she only did it in 45 mins. Her last few past papers were all above 90 though so I thought the worst case it was a pass

Well done to mini green and wafflenose's candidate!

Greenleave · 15/07/2016 20:58

Sorry just read Waffle's note now, well done to your student Waffle!
We are a very noisy household today as I have sleepovers and all the screams nonstop. I told her about the result and she only said"great" then off to scream again. Well, she did enjoy it and ended up really like it

Wafflenose · 15/07/2016 21:30

Well done, Mini Green! Same mark as Goo got. Goo lost a few marks making careless errors - she had 99 in a practice paaper - but got the distinction she wanted, and your DD did too. I am going to make a start with Rara this summer - just in the school holidays and some Saturdays, at a leisurely pace, but we should get there by the time she's about 10.

My young man is very pleased, and said he shocked himself!

Well done Prada and Waffle on the theory G5 & G6 results! Onwards and upwards for both students 👍

Musicdoc · 16/07/2016 14:55

Well done mini-Prada! Great to get over one hurdle and then move on to pastures new. Next terms focus will be on G7 violin and then 11+ prep here. Did you decide about JDs in the end, I remember you looking at RCMJD at the same time as us?

howabout · 16/07/2016 15:26
