Tandem Bike

After using a tandem bike one day on holiday, my dh and 11 y/o son are thinking of buying a tandem with the aim of weekend cycling trips/keeping fit.

There seems to be a huge range of prices for tandems, so was wondering if anyone had any experience of/advice regarding buying a first tandem? Thanks.

You would do well to join the Tandem club -- look at membership as an investment in making a wise choice, because as you must realise, it's an expensive decision to possibly get wrong.

I imagine that members can offer good advice; even if you just come out a few times (on your single bikes is fine) on some of their local regular cycle rides, you can then pick people's brains like crazy about the options.

Keep in mind that you'll probably want a car roof rack, anyway, and the Tandem club online classifieds are the best place to find a 2nd-hand tandem carrier for a reasonable price.
