Can be days, weeks, months even. Ligament injuries can be season-ending for professional sportsman. Breaking a bone sometimes a better option.

Any help?

Not resting it properly is a good way to make a bad situation worse. Regular NSAIDs, take things slowly, if it hurts don't do it.

cheers bruxeur, doc gave me no indication of how long it could be, just strapped me up gave me some anti-inflammatories and sent me on my way
hoping for weeks rather than months

Well to be fair I haven't either, and if either of us could predict the future we would be doing other, more lucrative jobs...

I did this a little while ago. Found a local physio and went there so got some exercises and a elastic band thing to work with for some gentle resistance. I also keep it strapped up and cold - hot baths are not your friend!

It was much better in about 2 weeks and running gently again within 4.
