Can't believe I am suggesting this AGAIN, anyone want to buddy up on starting Couch to 5k?

I have started so may times and failed an equal number.

Anyone want to start with me again?

All the ladies I started with on the original thread are now running 10k. It can be done, I just need to sort myself out.

Come and shame me into it.

4.86 miles power walk/gentle jog with pushchair yesterday morning. I didn't time it though. My thighs ache today. Nearly gave way under me when I was picking the babby up for the night feed!

Catilla · 05/11/2009 10:03

Which iPhone app did you guys get? I tried GetRunning, which allows you to play your own music and overlays the timing instructions - but I found the woman on it rather annoying... and it seemed a bit unreliable, especially if you need to start a new podcast/music during the run. Mistrusting your timer is a nightmare for someone so unfit and useless at keeping going!

giddykipper · 05/11/2009 20:13

Catilla I'm using one that's just called "Couch to 5k" by Felt Tip Inc. It was only £1.79 and while the voice is a bit annoying (and the siren a bit alarming!) it does the job and it means I can listen to my own music.

I haven't been out since Sunday, I think I might try to go out for W3R3 in about half an hour.

hello!

I am interested in doing this - got practically to the end in the summer and then stopped. But, I am slightly worried about running in the dark - do you have special fluorescent gear?

lulalullabye · 05/11/2009 20:23

Hello ladies. I did the couch to 5k recently and the most important advice to give is to get new, properley fitted running shoes before you start. I was plagued by injury and having my shoes fitted properley whilst trialing them on a treadmill at the shop worked wonders !!

Good luck, and remember, when you are having difficulty doing 90 secs, YOU WILL be running 5k in 9weeks !! It really does work

NeedaNewName · 05/11/2009 20:33

I joined a local group of women and we are doing our 5K this saturday - starting from scratch 6 weeks ago.

First week we did 1m run, 1m walk x 15
2nd week 2.5m run 2m walk x 10
3rd week 5m run, 2 m walk x 4
4th week 10m run 2m walk x 3
5th week 15m run 1m walk x 2
this week is the big one!

See if you can join a local group, much better and motivating than going out by yourself, I'm planning on going straight into the 10k group next week and I hate running!!!!!

whomovedmychocolatecookie · 05/11/2009 20:33

I'd like to do this but have only ever run on a treadmill, is it easier or harder outside. It's got to be more interesting, surely?

giddykipper · 05/11/2009 20:47

Bugger it, it's too late to go out tonight, I'll go tomorrow.

I think the time goes quicker outside wmmc.

whomovedmychocolatecookie · 05/11/2009 20:48

Quicker! Oh no, I want time away from the monsters......

NotaStepfordWife · 06/11/2009 10:35

I have done W1 runs 1 & 2 so far this week - am going ok! W1R3 tonight...

wmmc - far less dull outside imo; a bit harder, but much more effective. Lost 3 1/2 stone doing it before

Pennies · 06/11/2009 14:00

W4R2 today. I'm feeling super wiped out at the moment and I wasn't in the mood but the fresh air did me good and I'm glad I did it.

I've got the FeltTip Inc. app and agree about the voices / alarms but actually it's OK and it's great to run to my own music as well.

Running outside is harder than a treadmill but soooo much more interesting. I'm in a semi-rural setting and it has been brilliant to be outside, alone, experiencing the seasons. Also there's a lovely tacit camaraderie between yourself and other runners out there which I enjoy as well.

giddykipper · 06/11/2009 19:23

Back from W3R3, significant downside to running outside is the pissing rain! Each time I started running I felt like I wouldn't have the energy to finish, but I got through it fine. Bring on week 4.

Well done Pennies and NaSW (and anyone else who's been out that I've missed)

OP posts:
Pennies · 08/11/2009 16:11

Well done GK! Keep it up.

Where's everyone else? Hope you're all still with us.

W4R3 today. Legs very heavy at first but it did get easier.

Pennies · 08/11/2009 16:12

As for rain, sometimes I don't mind it, in fact I find it quite refreshing. The only things I hate is when it's really hot or when there's snow on the ground. Luckily both extremes are rather rare here.

giddykipper · 08/11/2009 19:36

I was at a wedding yesterday and recovering today, so no running! Planning to start week 4 tomorrow. I'd like to finish by the end of the year, it should be possible if I stick at it I think.

shallishanti · 08/11/2009 19:43

can I join?
am not doing the proper programme- I tried it about 18 mths ago and ended up with knackered knees- have been wearing orthotics ever since, and have just decided to try again. DP is very kindly coming out with me and timing me (he is a proper runner ) so we are walking 1m, running 1m, then walking 2m, running 2m, that sort of thing, over about 3 miles. Knees holding up so far.

NotaStepfordWife · 09/11/2009 19:21

oh dammit... have struggled to get out since last weds and am now flaked on sofa thinking up excuses not to go!

But... gk you've made me feel guilty... am going to get off my fat arse and do W1R3 right now.

I'll report back

NotaStepfordWife · 09/11/2009 20:04

Yay - did it.

funny how you can procrastinate like crazy about not going, but you never regret it afterwards

Went ok... will do W2R1 on Weds...

shallishanti - welcome!

cluelessnchaos · 09/11/2009 20:15

i am up for it i really need to get running again, i hereby sign up and promise to go out tommorow

giddykipper · 09/11/2009 20:19

Yay NASW, well done. And welcome shallishanti.

I've just been out for W4R1 which was seriously hard work. My usual circuit wasn't long enough though, I was back home with 2 minutes running left to do. I couldn't bring myself to run past my own front door so I cut it 2 minutes short. Probably for the best, the last 2 minutes would probably have been embarrassing! Need to find a longer circuit for next time though.

giddykipper · 09/11/2009 20:20

And hello clueless, x post

Time2Hibernate · 09/11/2009 20:28

Sounds like you are all light years ahead of me already. I really need to get 'started'. Do people find it makes a difference with Ipods to distract them from the heart thudding noise in the ears - or is it just me?!

I'm getting over the cold/virus thing this week, but will read your progress with interest. What sites do you log into for programmes?

NotaStepfordWife · 09/11/2009 21:51

here is the programme

And here are the podcasts.

Apparently there is an iphone app which allows you to run to your own music, but I have found the podcast ok so far (though early days!).

Welcome

shallishanti · 09/11/2009 22:12

nothing today - will get out tomorrow!

Pennies · 10/11/2009 18:22

W5R1 today - really didn't want to go but in the end it wasn't too bad. The first run is always the worst somehow.
