Personal trainers?

Hello, I am about to be made redundant from my job which is in IT and I am thinking about a career change.
A year ago I passed my Gym instructor course and loved it and have always been interested in fitness.
However at the time I put my personal trainer dreams on hold because of money issues. Now I think the time is right for me for a career change to do something I love and eventually I would like to specialise in ante/post and over 50s.

So questions for any personal trainers out there:

  1. which qualifications did you take and how did you build your experience up?
  2. which bits of the job do you love?
  3. which bits of the job do you hate?
  4. What would you say is an essential personality trait for a personal trainer?
  5. Any advice for anyone looking to get into the business?

Also for anyone else who is not a personal trainer if you were looking for a personal trainer what personality traits would you look for?

I really appreciate any replies.

thanks.

hi Libras

  1. I did the YMCA Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification (I also have their Children's health related exercise qualification and also a specialist bone health qualification.
  2. being my own boss, planning my own working hours
  3. lack of atmosphere and buzz as i work from my own gym at home so only ever have max 3 clients in there at one time. Also, lazy people who think that by paying for PT it will mean they can reach their goals without trying.
  4. being open minded to different types of motivation, being creative with programmes to fit individuals likes/dislikes etc
  5. even if you want to be self employed and work from your own gym, do some floor work in one of the big gyms to gain experience (and confidence is necessary).

Good luck
