Anyone interested in joining a power-walking thread for New Year??

Countingtheflocksbynight · 30/12/2008 19:25

There was a similar one last year for those valiant Mumsnetters who took part in Moonwalks. It was a thread where everyone reported progress (or not - as in my case latterly) trials, injuries and triumphs and gained a bit of motivation and support.

I just want to start walking for fitness again in the new Year (haven't even worked out my new regime yet - daily or thrice weekly) but just wanted to get the ball rolling.

Anyone interested?

Well done TCOGB.

What make is your best frien? I'm thinking of getting one

bigTillyMint · 26/01/2009 20:08

OOps

I meant what make is your pedometer? Do you thik it is accurate? Lots of them don't have very good reviews!

SilentTerror · 26/01/2009 20:10

Have walked or jogged every other day for two weeks now,and have lost weight.
Am really enjoying it,don't go very far, about 1 to 2 miles at most, but feel fitter.

JammyQueenOfTheNewYear · 26/01/2009 20:13

I only managed a few short (5-10 mins at most) walks today, running errands. Will have a nice 20 minute walk from work to collect DD from nursery tomorrow though

ThingsCanOnlyGetBetter · 26/01/2009 20:23

Tilly - mine is a lovely pink Lonsdale one - don't really care if it's accurate - it the psychological thing of looking at it when I get home and seeing how far it says I've walked . Would be harder to keep it up without one. It makes me want to beat the previous days record!!

Countingthegreyhairs · 27/01/2009 11:20

Fantastic! Everyone's back!

And you've all been plugging away brilliantly .... well done on your progress ... am obviously going to have to get stuck in a bit more seriously here ....

Hi Mad - thanks, dd 5 yrs so home from school, am on my 17th game of snap ....grrrr.... very good point about the all-weather wii but I don't have the discipline to exercise indoors somehow ... have lots of Rosemary Conley dvd's sitting unused on my shelves as evidence!!

Mrs Mattie - you are an example to us all - you make me feel ashamed about my previous posting actually ... it is really impressive that you have managed to get out every day for an hour with a newborn ....

A warm welcome ThingsCanOnlyGetBetter (I like your upbeat nickname btw). I know what you mean about walking with intent - it does help - although I love being out doing circuits in the park ...congratulations on your great start ...

Hello Silent Terror - that's really impressive too !!

Yo Jammy and BigTilly ...

Tilly - not sure about 1,000 step question ... it takes 2,000 steps to walk about one mile (does a human walk about 5 miles an hour or I am getting mixed up with a horse???)

anyway ....!!! ....here's more info:

www.dietandfitnessresources.co.uk/fitness_exercise/10000_steps.htm

www.thewalkingsite.com/10000steps.html

BTW - I can't seem to get my pedometer to work for more than about 5 mins - it's so unnecessarily complicated ...I suspect it was designed by a bloke ...

bigTillyMint · 27/01/2009 13:02

Thanks Counting - the links are interesting.

I think we are doing about 5 miles in just over an hour when we go out training,so I guess that's about 10,000.

I would quite like to get a pedometer just to see how many steps I do in an average day, not counting extra exercise. I was looking at this one Anyone got one? Any good?

Countingthegreyhairs · 27/01/2009 13:36

Well done on your 10,000 EXTRA steps Tilly

There's a good range on here:

JammyQueenOfTheNewYear · 27/01/2009 19:43

Well, I walked for just over a mile from work to DD's nursery. And I will take a "detour" on the way to our group tomorrow, aiming to add an extra mile and half to the direct half mile walk. But I can't get up to 5 miles an hour! I'm more of a plodder than a power walker, I'm afraid.

verylapsedrunner · 27/01/2009 19:48

Why not give this a try www.nordicwalking.co.uk/.....you soon learn to ignore the rude coments such as "have you lost your skis?"

Countingthegreyhairs · 28/01/2009 16:53

Well done Jammy - I'm plodding along right with you - after dark tonight as well (once dh comes home and can baby-sit) which has the advantage that the general populace is spared the sight of me doing it ....

Thanks for the link Verylapsedrunner. There are some outdoor classes in Nordic Walking quite near me actually but I have never quite plucked up the courage. It does look good though ....

madlentileater · 28/01/2009 20:27

I met someone who tried to show me how to do nordic walking (apparently it's very popular in Germany) but I couldn't get the hang of it! Not very well co-ordinated! But it's supposed to be very good for you.
Should be on the wii fit tonight but had no time before cooking and now am too full

JammyQueenOfTheNewYear · 28/01/2009 21:46

Walked 2.5 miles this morning. And went into our local pool/gym to see about membership. Still intend to keep walking though, but will be nice to swim as well. If I go twice a week then it's cheaper to have membership, so as I try to take her every week (though it's more of a splash than a swim as she's just 19 months) then I have an incentive to go for a proper swim by myself each week, because if I don't then I'm effectively losing money! (IYSWIM)

verylapsedrunner · 29/01/2009 08:02

Yes, Nordic Walking is very popular on the continent, that's where I started. I find I walk much faster with my poles, I did an 8km charity race last year and overtook quite alot of runners/joggers . That being said I hardly do it at the moment. DH is working abroad and I have a dog to walk 3 times a day and dogs, leads and poles just don't mix..I've tried!

Countingthegreyhairs · 31/01/2009 21:23

LOL v. lapsed - I now have a very clear image of you in jogging gear trying to stay upright while a small dog "dances" the may-pole around you!

Nordic walking is increasingly popular over here in Belgium - but it has stayed in the country rather than come in to town ... you might see the odd person with poles in an urban park but not many ... I'm sure it's great exercise though ...

How is everyone doing? I have to confess that I am pretty underwhelmed by my progress so far - it's just a tough time of year - dark, cold, everyone's dc are ill - but let's give ourselves a break and try and get out tomorrow ...even if it's just for 30-40 mins ...we'll feel better for it ...!!

JammyQueenOfTheNewYear · 31/01/2009 21:32

Hi grey hairs. I haven't managed to walk that far at a time yet, but did add an extra mile to a half mile walk yesterday, and made myself do a 1.5 walk today, even though that errand could easily have been postponed.

bigTillyMint · 01/02/2009 11:28

Come on everyone, get your trainers, hats and gloves and get going!

How are you going ST? very that you have lost weight - I am obviously eating the extra calories (and more!)
I don't know how anyone can run a mile, let alone 2!

We did a 10miler yesterday - was very glad to see the finish bus stop in sight, but after a bath and a sit down, no aches or pains for once!

optimisticmumma · 01/02/2009 11:35

Can I join in please? I'll probably start tomorrow and do Weds and Fri this week and see how I get on. Have only just found thread so have no clue what to do as I type but I think the support thing is great!! Thanks for organising us, counting.

JammyQueenOfTheNewYear · 01/02/2009 13:04

Well done on the 10 miler TillyMint. I used to walk that regularly, but couldn't atm. I hope to get back to it in the coming months though.

bigTillyMint · 03/02/2009 07:09

Is anyone going out in the snow?

I went up to the common with the family yesterday, but it's too slippery on the pavements and the gym is shut

madlentileater · 03/02/2009 21:28

am doing very badly...keep being late home from work, have to either cook straight away or dp has cooked, then can't go out cos I'm too full.
MUST get home sooner.

Countingthegreyhairs · 04/02/2009 15:12

A warm welcome to the thread OptimisticMumma and "hi" to everyone else ...

Well done Jammy and Tilly for keeping everyone going and for keeping going yourselves ...

MadLentil - I hear you!! I'm exactly the same on the days I work ... or because dh is home late and we eat late ...I haven't the iron discipline required to eat later ... and can't be bothered with staggered sittings tbh ... so I end up walking the streets at 11pm some nights!! But as part of fly-lady baby-steps ... I'm meant to be going to bed at 10.30 ... aarrrghh ... going to have to try and use my time more efficiently ...

You are all doing a lot better than me despite the snow... so "bravo" and keep on going ... I'll be the one staggering and stumbling along behind ...wearing a tea cosy hat ....... trying to catch up ...

Countingthegreyhairs · 04/02/2009 15:15

Buda · 04/02/2009 15:25

Hi - can I join please? Really need to start exercising and walking I can do! Have a lot of weight to lose too.

Have had DS off school this week but he is back tomorrow (or else!) so I can start in the morning. Found a pedometer that DH had been given the other day so will get that going and start on week 1.

Countingthegreyhairs · 04/02/2009 15:42

A warm welcome Buda!! The more the merrier and we need strength in numbers at the moment tbh because it's a tough time of year ...

BTW for anyone interested in acquiring a new pedometer, there's a review of them in this month's Good Housekeeping (yes, I've reached that age ...)

Silva Exercise-4-Life price £14.95 came top (81 out of a 100) and was deemed good value, small and accurate www.silva.ltd.uk

Omron Walking Style £19.95 came second (75 out of 100) owing to its versatility www.omron-healthcare.com

Silva Exercise-4-Life Ex3Plus at £29.95 came third (29.95) because it's tiny but very easy to view (available from Silva as above)
