I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

Thanks
Tomorrow night our club is doing a 5k time trial across a cold and windy Severn bridge. Everything they do seems so gruelling. Or is it me??? I am wondering if there are any easier gentler clubs or am I just being soft?
Probably!

hatwoman · 05/01/2009 23:27

oh my lord - I so couldn't run across the severn bridge. I've become scared of heights in my middle age and I tremble on the escalators in our local shopping centre and have to focus hard on the pavement when I run across a local railway bridge. the severn makes me shudder.

runforlove - I'm doing the london marathon this year too. I keep getting very nervous about it - but am sure it'll be ok.

and MrsMike - I can't believe you were third from last with that time - must have been a lot of very keen runners - you did really well.

TinyWhiteFeather · 06/01/2009 08:05

RunForLove, sorry about your Dad, but big respect for the running and positive attitude.

MrsMike, I am very impressed...well-done!

Ran last night and a very fast running club was out . Felt loke a chimp but kept my head down and stuck it out. Couldn't believe how fast some people were running.

Thank-you so much for the info on shin-splints, I shall be studying it intently, I also live in the peak district so hills are unavoidable really!

fishie · 06/01/2009 11:52

mrsmike your running club sound well hard. i can barely go across severn bridge as a car passenger!

hatwoman i have never been good with heights but have also got much worse, i think it is an eyesight thing, i am longsighted in one eye which is worsening with age.

moondog i love led zep too. also have ac/dc coming in post should be there when i get home for tonights very cold run which i am rather dreading.

mrsmike · 06/01/2009 12:46

yes I think they are well hard. Wish there was a gentler alternative sometimes . But I do need the planned structured sessions or I'd just give up on my own. Did investigate Womens Running Network but there's no local group - does anyone belong to one - they sound nicer

ali23 · 06/01/2009 13:16

Folks, you guys are making me miss runnng so much.
I was an avid runners until I had DD who is now 20months. The problem is that I have quite a bad prolapse but the gyno won't sanction the necesary op until I have finished bredding.
It is very uncomfortable to run with and I've been advised to do other things. But I miss running bady. Has anyone else come back from this kind of thing? I'm thinking that I could run gently for just 20 or 30 mins a couple of times a week and see how I go.
Any advice appreciated.

OrmIrian · 06/01/2009 13:20

Well done mrsmike. That sounds perfectly respectable to me

Just managing ten miles would please me. I struggle with 8 atm.

mrsmike · 06/01/2009 13:29

Ali my friend has a ring holding up her prolapse (sorry!) and does some gentle jogging. She does swiming and cycling too but I suppose that's totally different. But maybe hers is less severe than yours as an operation wasn't offered to her.

Pendulum · 06/01/2009 13:37

mrsmike, you are making me nervous

I am testing out a club tomorrow evening for the first time- hope they are nice Have never run with anyone else before!

Have choice between mixed sex athletic club and newly set up women's only group. I found and contacted the AC before I heard of the women's group so will give them a try, but I suspect the women's club may be a bit gentler (blurb says she caters for absolute beginners)

If your group are really too hard-core for you, how about clubbing together with a couple of friends for a personal trainer to take you out on some sessions? I hear lots of gyms are at risk of going under as people cut back on subscriptions, so you may be able to get a good deal.

runforlove you sound truly hooked. Very sorry about your dad. What a deserving charity to run for.

ali23 · 06/01/2009 13:47

Thanks, mrsmike. Yeah, gyno thought ring would be pretty useless. It's hellish - not sore but a real pain in the neck when it comes to exercise and the like.
And, for the rest of the runners, don't know how helpful this is, but I used to run with the Glasgow women's network and it was fantastic.
They run every day of the week from a different centre and the coaches and company of other runners was excellent. They also catered for different levels. It's not quite as hardcore as a 'proper' running group but they were brilliant to run with. Particularly at this time of year when you don't want to be running alone in the dark at night.

suiz · 06/01/2009 14:17

Has anyone tried Skins or other compression tights, shorts etc? Do they work in helping pulled muscles and cramps afterwards for you, if you do?

hatwoman · 06/01/2009 20:34

Hi everyone - anyone else take their life/ankles in their hands on the ice today? I went for a run in some woods and it was like running on an ice rink. I'd been in the car 10 mins previously and noticed it was -5, so I was wondering how long I'd last if I did trip and break my ankle...there wasn't anyone about - and I hadn;t told anyone where I was running and I didn't have my mobile...obviously I got back in one piece, and once out of the woods the rest of the run was lovely. blummin cold though!

OrmIrian · 06/01/2009 21:10

It's very dodgy hatwoman!

I confess that I gave it a miss tonight. It's just too cold. My athsma plays up and everything hurts too much. And I'm afraid of straining something and taking months to get over it

mrsmike · 06/01/2009 22:11

Well we did our 5k time trial over the severn bridge tonight (28 mins for me - 3rd from last AGAIN!). And despite the cold and ice I really enjoyed it I think what made the difference is there were a few females there who aren't THAT much better than me, so I didn't feel quite so out of place amidst all the lycra clad warriors So Pendulum don't let me put you off joining a club, I was just being a bit feeble earlier, am sure you will really benefit from joining a club.

fishie · 06/01/2009 22:15

mrsmike i am awed.

fishie · 06/01/2009 22:19

orm you can't go in this weather with asthma. gives me hurty knee.

mrsmike · 06/01/2009 22:20

because of the weather do you mean? They never let the weather stop them, I wish it would sometimes ...

mrsmike · 06/01/2009 22:22

do I get the prize for the most well 'ard running club then?

fishie · 06/01/2009 22:26

i am never joining a running club ever.

you are dead tough.

mrsmike · 06/01/2009 22:32

No, I spend a lot of time feeling a bit uneasy about it all. And am just not motivated to go out alone. Think I like being told what to do in a way. Do you go running alone? I really applaud all of you who have the self discipline to go out alone.

fishie · 06/01/2009 22:43

i can only go alone. it is the whole point of it for me. i also swim, more solitary stuff. but not lately while i am consumed with running passion.

BlessThisMess · 06/01/2009 23:47

I went out today and did a gentle 2.5 miles (I am so in awe of you lot doing 6/8/10 miles!). I deliberately chose the fields rather than the roads to avoid the ice - and did just fine.

TinyWhiteFeather · 07/01/2009 02:31

at swimming fishie, our local pool is closed again. I have always done running, cycling and swimming and am missing the swimming.

Wallace...I bought a tight tubigrip for my leg with shinsplints (also have a dodgy knee on that leg due to a cycling injury) and was gobsmacked at the immediate comfort and relief. Am only going to hike on it tomorrow as even that was painful but thanks for the advice. I was disheartened that I might not be able to do my firdt challenge of the year but after a week or so building up to it, am looking forward to one I have had planned for ages.

Welcome (back) to the peak-district Hatwoman. I was thinking of getting together for a run when you had settled down, but am a little in awe of your times!

Most of the time I love running alone, I do enjoy running while my son cycles, and think company makes me push myself a bit more.

I am dying to get out on the moors again and if my leg allows will make it my Friday run....rubs hands in excited anticipation!

greenlawn · 07/01/2009 13:00

I just nearly went A over T on a walk so no icy pavement running for me.

Never done the running club thing, but I do usually do a long run once a week with a friend as it helps the time pass and we have a good chitchat as we run round. Rest of the time its me on my own, and its definitely easier to cop out. BUT - some of the best runs I've ever had have been after thinking "I don't feel like it today"!

HarrogateMum · 07/01/2009 13:25

just managed to do 3.2 miles on my lunch break at work! A colleague and I have been whinging about not feeling comfortable at night going alone so we decided to go for a run ehre (there is one shower at work, although it is fairly manky.........). We did it in a respectable 29.30 according to my Ipod! I feel really good, esp since I have been so rubbish during Nov and Dec.
