I can't find the old one in Health, and we deserve to be in brand new shiny Sport and exercise anyway

Sunshine, I guess that now I'm doing fewer runs per week (4 instead of 5) I've tried to up the distances a little bit - I currently do around 25-30 per week.

I always do a 5-miler and a 3-miler (the 3-miler is on a Friday evening and although I've tried to make this run 4 or 5 miles from time to time, I'm usually really tired from work and am more likely to go out if I know it's only for 3 miles). On a Wednesday DH works from home so I don't have to wait for him to get in from work, so my run that day is 5-7 miles - occasionally 8 if I have the energy.

At the moment I do a 4-week cycle so a) I don't do the same runs and the same mileage every week, and b) I don't get bored! It looks like this:

Week 1: 5, 5, 3, 10
Week 2: 5, 6, 3, 12
Week 3: 5, 7, 3, 14
Week 4: 5, 8, 3, 16

Have to say I don't always do week 4 - sometimes I go back to week 1 again!

Twink, sorry to hear about Mr. Twink. Have not read back to the beginning of this thread so no idea how long he's been having treatment, but fingers crossed for you.

I managed to turn my left ankle over while running last night. It was a really dark stretch of road and I think I caught some uneven pavement. I had a few seconds of searing pain but then it subsided. I was only 2 miles into my 5-mile run so had no choice but to carry on. It was a bit stiff last night and this morning, but no swelling so far so hopefully I've got away with it. Typical as I'm doing my first race in 2.5 years on Sunday!

SmilesLikeNoOther · 06/12/2008 11:55

Could somebody untie me please? I am trying twinks exercise! and seem to be stuck.

Still very slow running as body still suffering with cold, but am just happy to be out there.

sparklyxmasfairy · 06/12/2008 12:30

hi all (sfx dressed for xmas)

went to running shop today had gait analysed etc was told shoes are fine not too worry about gait which is fine and shown how to do some exercises to strenghten quads don't you just love them!

but leg/ knee still sore so might pop out in a bit for a slow short jog run

thexmasstockingmonsterofdoom · 07/12/2008 07:49

I have a 10k race today, am a bit nervous tbh. I will not be taking my handbag with me it was my mum started it off, she gets worried and says I should take my phone and some money and obviously my keys. then I got really paranoid if I fall down and hurt myself who would collect dd's.
I havent been out for a week as it has been so icy here, am hoping they will have gritted the race route but that might be hoping too much. Am aiming to beat my last 10k time which was 1.11. I know it is not great but improvemtn is all I ask.

sunshine75 · 07/12/2008 10:17

Good luck. Where is your race? It's a lvely day here (newcastle) for running - all bright and cold

HarktheHarrogateMumissinging · 07/12/2008 11:31

oh good luck sockmonster! Hope it goes well. I have not been out for 10 days....and need to force myself to go out as its sunny but very very icy still here in the frozen north!

hatwoman · 07/12/2008 13:24

good luck sockmonster - hope it went well. I'm feeling a bit groggy today....in theory I need to do 8 miles to keep up with my plan of 20 a week. and I so don;t feel like it. in fact I'm fed up of waking every morning with achey legs....heigh ho

hawesmead5 · 07/12/2008 14:06

Hi there
Just thought I would past on a bargain for any of you guys in the cold north! The new balance shop in Shap (Cumbria) is having a half price day off everything. I have just got 4 pairs of running shoes for £80 - great hey!
Good luck to sock monster - it's a great day out there for running, but just be a bit careful it's very slippy under foot (well up in sunny Kendal it is

sunshine75 · 07/12/2008 14:21

Had a horrendous run today. We took dd swimming and I decided to run home afterwards. 6 miles is far more than I am capable of at the mo. Totally knackered after half an hour, I fell in a big puddle and was wet up to the knees. Then tried to take a short cut and got lost is a really radge area, had horrid kids throw stones at me and ask me for fags (!!!) and thought I wouldn't make it home alive.

I'm going to watch tv and eat chocolate on sundays in future.

SmilesLikeNoOther · 07/12/2008 15:43

Oh sunshine, I am so sorry, how awful for you. I was going to post about a lovely run I had had, but it would seem unfair.
Please don't lose heart though....

sparklyxmasfairy · 07/12/2008 15:47

sockmonstter I hope it went well, lovely day for it in London

sunshine that is horrid poor you

had some commitments today so no running but looking forward to Wednesday, and wouldn't you know Runners world has a feature on just the injury I picked up with recovery and prevention exercises as well, how timely

hope everyone is well

HarktheHarrogateMumissinging · 07/12/2008 16:07

I did 5.5k in the sun/snow. Some icy patches but I just ran on the road and ignored the cars who got annoyed with me!

hatwoman · 07/12/2008 16:57

does sound horrible sunshine - but don't let it put you off. I'm sure there are lots of places where you can have a nice run and avoid such horrors.

OrmIrian · 07/12/2008 17:21

Don't you dare give up sunshine!

So the run then eat chocolates.

fishie · 07/12/2008 20:49

i did 55 mins in sunshine and frost with lots of twittering birds. mapmyrun reckons 8.5k but i am always faster than that, can't map it properly because it is under trees so cannot see path.

sunshine it is dead brave of you to go for a run after swimming anyway. puddles are hell, i run without glasses (only one bad eye) and have had a few unpleasant accidents.

orm (or anyone else) how far do you ideally run in a week and are you near in age to me? (39)

fishie · 07/12/2008 20:50

stockingmonster how did you get on?

CurrantBun · 07/12/2008 20:55

Evening all.

Ran my first race in 2.5 years this morning - 10K in freezing cold, icy conditions. Beautiful crisp, cold but sunny morning, but the ice was treacherous. I managed to slip and fall on the ice just a few feet shy of the 8K marker, but managed to pick myself up and carry on to the finish - didn't slow down but obviously lost about 30 seconds picking myself up again etc (not to mention feeling a complete idiot!) Finished in 44:19 by my watch so pretty happy with that. It's not a PB but not too far off, and I've suffered with hamstring problems for the last few weeks as well as twisting my ankle quite badly on Thursday's run, so haven't been able to do much fast running lately.

Was good to race again after so long - although I'd forgotten how much I hate 10K! I much prefer 10 miles or further - I don't have the top-end speed for the shorter distances, and can't be bothered to put myself through the pain of training to acquire it!

fishie · 07/12/2008 21:10

very well done currantbun.

are people who run with music less likely to do races than those who go without?

hatwoman · 07/12/2008 21:10

I had a great run this afternoon. I did 7.5 miles at dusk and it was amazing. i was in Bushy park and there was a layer of ground mist and you could see the deer and their antlers and silhouetted trees against this magic silvery mist, topped by pink clouds as the sun set. I was running with a huge grin on my face. I;ve lived near the park for 13 years and must have been there hundreds of times but I've never seen it looking as incredible as it did today. and if I wasn't a runner I'd have stayed indoors...

thexmasstockingmonsterofdoom · 08/12/2008 07:48

Hi I idnt come back with an update, I am very proud of myself time was 1hr 7mins which looks absolutley like I was walking copmpared with currant bun, was it the same race? where are you. I was quite far down but I wasnt last and more importantly i finished. I beat my last 10k time which was 1.11 so all in all I am quite proud. I really struggle up to the half way point and then I find it really nice so I dont know if a half marathon is a good idea.

sunshine75 · 08/12/2008 09:23

Oh, I'm not put off. Find runs like that quite entertaining really (well with hindsight, anyway)

Well-done all 10kers. Hopefully I will manage a race in 2009

SmilesLikeNoOther · 08/12/2008 11:44

When I started running again I wore a baseball hat and sunglasses! lol. Probabaly looked stranger than just getting on with it.

I did a beautiful run at the weekend, and on a long slow incline decided to pace myself to some mountain bikers, but not only caught up with them, overtook two of them!

Oh it gets easier baby, and more and more addictive....have fun!

Everyone sounds like they are doing so well, it is fab to hear.

Go for it MrsSanta....I can vouch for it being one of the best things you will take up (and it helped me lose 4 stone)

hawesmead5 · 08/12/2008 20:23

Fishie - I love running with my music on I find that if I am running on the tread mill I need something with a fast beat to really fly! I'm not racing as much now since having my lo (as hubby also runs in the same races and he gets first dibs as he is very good) but I used to race every weekend!

ambercat · 08/12/2008 20:40

I went for a run on the ice today, managed 5 miles but almost went arse over tit a few times and it was very slow going, enjoyed it though but do hope it gets a bit warmer soon. Have decided to do a 10k race on boxing day!! very scared, its my 1st one.

Currantbun, your time is amazing, you must have been flying round! maybe the ice helped!!well done.

Sockmonster, well done on beating your time, thats the sort of time i will be trying for i think.

Hatwomen, your run sounds magical, lucky you.

CurrantBun · 09/12/2008 10:41

Sockmonster, which race did you do? Mine was the Regent's Park 10K in central London (series of races organised by Mornington Chasers running club).

Ambercat, racing on Boxing Day? Now that is brave! Go for it - your first one will always be a personal best!

I enjoyed the race but not racing doesn't bother me either. To improve I need to race more, as I don't push myself when I'm on my own. Not that I'm keen to go eyeballs-out that often - Sunday hurt!
