Anyone else find abseiling REALLY hurt?

I went abseiling with a group on Saturday, never done it before.

It was fun, but once I was over and started moving downwards I got this massive stabby muscle-type pain at the top of my hips (basically if you stand with hands at the front edge of bone, about where your jeans pocket is, that's where).

It lasted all the way down, and the residual pain was still there until another four or five people had descended. Later any particular core exertion made it twinge (initially even sneezing). Monday and Tuesday I was still getting effects.

I did find it quite difficult to stop the descent - I've known for some time that my core strength is terrible and I'm not strong enough to bear my own weight properly.

Nobody else seemed to have any trouble, though it's worth noting that I was the only postgravida.

Hip flexor / psoas type pain?

I have absolutely no idea. (quick wikigoogle) quite possibly.

The harness most likely played a part. Was it a ‘group’ harness? No padding, thinner leg loops. They hurt and pinch on nerves and tendons. I find if i wear one of those i get twinges in my hamstring.

Or weak adductors. I have weak adductors and get shooting pains where you describe and then down my thigh.

Definitely you need to get this looked at because no you should not be experiencing that type of pain. I have abseiled many times and I’m not of the limber variety either and have never experienced anything like that so it is definitely not typical or usual. I’d definitely check out what is going on so you don’t do any damage.

Pain in that area is often the hip joint itself. So it could have been strain on the joint or the joint capsule, or the labrum. It's hard to know.
