Tips for belly weight loss

Ok so as per my title…

im eating a calorie deficit diet so that part is covered. I have 2 questions

firstly I’ve started walking this week and have done it every day mon to Fri and woke up today my legs are aching. Obviously normal as my legs aren’t used to this level of exercise but roughly when should I expect that to stop?

secondly we have a trampoline at home in the garden so it was recommended by a friend that I do 100 jumps on it. But I can only manage batches of 20 at the mo before I need to take a break. Is that gonna help if I’m only doing batches of 20? I am doing my 100 a day just in breaks

When I started running my calves ached and were painful for about 2-3 weeks until they got used to it.

You can't really target a specific area to lose fat from. You'll just lose generally all over (body type does effect it a bit ie I'm pearshaped so generally I have more fat in that area) . You can try to tone your tummy area which might help improve how it looks.

Cotswoldmama · 18/04/2026 20:23

All exercise is good, just try to build on it each time and be consistent, as your fitness improves you'll manage more in one go and can start increasing the amount.

I lost a stone giving up cakes and biscuits for about 10 weeks. That stone came off my boobs. I could cry.

user3424 · 18/04/2026 20:26

Someone told me my belly was all sweets/refined carbs! I never thought of it that way. So I've cut all (added) sugar (fruit ok) and reduced bread. It seems to be working!

The first week is really painful though. But makes you realise how sugar addicted i was.... that stuff is poison.

Littletreefrog · 18/04/2026 20:27

You can't decide where to lose weight from but you can choose where to tone. Have a look on YouTube for some exercises to do to tone whatever area you want to do focus on. There are always some you can do with no or minimal equipment.

aspirationalferret · 18/04/2026 20:46

I think with belly weight a lot is diet. But general exercise and toning is good. Trampolining is exhausting!! So well done for trying. Batches of 20 will still help. Maybe do some less intense work in between the batches. Sit ups or planks perhaps?

adding weights in when you’re ready will really help

add lots of water and you’re doing great!!

Thanks for all the advice

Also Pilates or yoga will also help to build strength and support your core so that you don’t injure yourself. They can also feel less intense and help with toning flappy bits!! 😂

try YouTube for some 10 minute easy ones to get you started.

all if you don’t have weights you can start small with tins of beans!

illsendansostotheworld · 18/04/2026 21:02

Following as l carry it there too op

tooloololoo · 18/04/2026 21:08

helpmelosemybigbelly · 19/04/2026 10:11

Is it still ok to carry on walking with my muscle pain?

Yoga is great. My best friend does it and has a super toned body. She’s a size 18 and losing weight but her body is toned.

How about reducing carbs or gluten? That helps me a lot to lose weight.

Comtesse · 19/04/2026 10:14

Lucy Wyndham Read is good on this. Start slow, 5-7 mins a day will start to get results if you keep going. Consistency more important than big bursts of activity that drop away after just a few times.

Newgolddream70 · 19/04/2026 10:19

Hi OP, I started walking and eating in a calorie deficit in the new year. I’ve lost 18 pounds which is great (about 10 more to go) but I still have lower belly fat. I know you can’t choose where you lose the fat from so I think I need to just keep going until it’s disappeared! And yes, after 4 months my legs still ache after walking, especially my right knee and quad. I am going to introduce some yoga I think. Not sure how old you are but I’m 55 and age has definitely got something to do with it - not impossible to get in shape but perhaps a little harder. I take Vit D as that helps with joints and mood as well as HRT.

Newgolddream70 · 19/04/2026 10:23

Just to add I saw a musculoskeletal practitioner at my doctors surgery and she checked my legs, hips and joints. She ruled out problems with bones but thought the tendons in my right leg were tight which were causing the pain. She’s referred me to physio but told me to keep up the walking.

ToadRage · 19/04/2026 10:26

My best friend has lost a shed load of weight since she got a dog.

Turnitoffnonagain · 19/04/2026 10:29

@helpmelosemybigbelly don't be disheartened. 20 bounces at a time will gradually be 30, 40, just build up slow. Keep walking. Are you wearing decent supportive trainers? Because they can make the world of difference. If your aching muscles are putting you off, you could do alternating days, walking one day, bouncing the next.
The trick to maintaining your exercise is to mix it up a bit and not focus too hard on one type. I found swimming to be a great help.

helpmelosemybigbelly · 19/04/2026 10:34

I’m 42, I can’t swim as nearly drowned once so against that idea lol. I do have supportive trainers yes

Also, bouncing on a trampoline is said to be very good for lymphatic drainage and circulation. Its good exercise with less strain on your joints. 👍
If you like "dancey" type exercise I would recommend Jazzercise, if you can find a local class. I went for years and it toned me up, especially my belly. Good fun too.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 19/04/2026 10:42

Firstly, well done on starting a fitness journey. I’m assuming you are starting from a low baseline so don’t beat yourself up for not being able to cope the same as people who’ve already got a good fitness level.

Improving your fitness will bring so many long term benefits.

Keep the walking up. Do your legs hurt as you are walking or is it just afterwards? (Basically- do you need to modify what you are doing or improve your recovery)

previous posters are right, belly fat will go with overall fat loss.

Ragamuffin8 · 19/04/2026 10:51

The only thing that helps reduce my belly is cutting refined sugar and going low carb.

For me I can be 7 stone or 11 stone (I’m v short), but I always look pregnant unless I cut sugar/carbs irrespective of weight.

Exercise helps my mental wellbeing and fitness, not spot reducing.

Agreed with dance type exercise. I hate the gym apart from gym classes.

And don’t deprive yourself eg of the odd square of chocolate or you may fall off the diet/healthy eating wagon.
