Using an app in the gym

I did a series of shared PT sessions last year, to make sure that my form was ok when lifting, with the aim of then carrying on at the gym on my own but I still don’t really feeL confident. I’ve just dowloaded the Bits App so that I have a plan and videos to watch so that I know what I’m doing but now I’m worried that I’m going to look stupid watching videos and following an app whilst in the gym. I’m massively over thinking this but wondered if anyone else started off this way to gain confidence and was able to progress with an app to help?

I use the gyms own app so on that basis, no. Everyone fiddles on their phone between sets so don’t worry about that. People are more focused on themselves than what others are doing. Good luck with the gym!

I don’t think anyone would notice or care to be honest!

my program from my trainer is on an app and it times my rests etc. When I’m resting I tend to be scrolling on my phone if I’m training alone to stop me getting bored and skipping th rest!

I find instagram fitness pages really helpful too so find a few that your goals align with and you like the look of. There are loads out there.

no one will care about you being on your phone, I promise. One thing I’ve noticed is that gyms are very much “head down, get on with it” places. People are also very supportive there and happy to help.

Very common for people to be either watching tutorials, recording themselves to check their form, or keeping notes (highest weight, how many reps, best setting for your height for a particular piece of kit) on their phones.

And even if it wasn't, you definitely won't look any weirder/dafter than others in there who are dropping weights, grunting like constipated buffalo, exercising for 5 minutes, then posing for 20... Everyone pretty much ignores each other and gets on with it.

I belong to a really serious strength gym, which used to specialise in bodybuilding but now does loads of things - and has almost 50% female membership. We all lift heavy, work hard - and I see LOADS of people following workouts on their phones, or referring to an app during their work out. Not too many gym bunnies just posing for Insta.

I also see lots of people using notebooks, and recording their sets/reps, or referring to their notes to follow their work out plan. I admire their organisation.

I use Stronger by the Day (but I also follow Rachel Henley on SM, and think she's FAB - so have fun lifting animals!) and I refer to the in-app videos for guidance, as well as use the SBTD app to record work outs. Do let us know how you get on with the Bits app - it looks fun!

So, yes, you're overthinking it ...

Thanks all. I’ve had a migrane for the past 2 weeks so haven’t managed to get up in time to go but I am going to brave it, on my own tomorrow. I just need to put my headphones in and get on with it.
