If you had 6 weeks to get to your best fitness

What would you do?

I’ve got 6 weeks until I do my first 10km race. I can do 10km, but it’s a steady plod. I’d love to feel at my best on the day.

I’m already doing a running training program so anything else I’m open to suggestions. Things like supplements, diet, habits anything that works for you.

thanks in advance.

I love doing the 30 day shred to get in shape (it's on youtube, Jillian Michaels). It's a great all over workout and I always feel stronger and have more energy within just 3 or 4 workouts. I did it years ago before my sisters wedding and I felt amazing, definitely the best shape I've been in. Doing it again now to get in shape post kids.

I would have 2 days weights including core , 2 days yoga/ stretch/swim , a short fast run day, a longer run and a total rest day , although ideally some kind of sprints day would be good - but I’d be too worried about injury to run three times in a week

I’d think a lot about diet - loads of fruit and veg and diversity

but - given I have 9 weeks to prepare for my own long distance walking challenge and am struggling - I think the thing is to do something even if it’s not perfect

Runner-specific strength work: with a focus on glutes - so: lunges, squats, one-legged squats (like Bulgarian split squats). Build up to weighted movements (dumbbell or weighted backpack or vest).

If you have access to a gym, plyometrics: jumping on and off plyo boxes

Sprint interval training and/or Fartlek training

Maintain mobility particularly ankle and hip.

Intervals definitely

Intervals definitely

Yes, the only way you get faster at running is by running faster, it sounds obvious, but it's my little mantra to myself when I am doing the dreaded intervals. But they do work.

ParmaVioletTea · 07/02/2026 21:16

Yeah, intervals.

At least you can tell yourself "It's only 200 metres" (or whatever)

SocksOnAFox · 07/02/2026 21:48

Thank you, this is all helpful. So do intervals!

Look at Gillian
runner’s strength training
eat better

my initial list also had get more sleep, creatine and protein.

@becausetrampslikeus good luck with your walk. How far is it?

@becausetrampslikeus that’s great, well done 👏🏻 20 days walking? Wow, that’s amazing. Hope the weather is kind to you wherever you’re doing it.
