Video games such as Ring Fit Adventure

I really hate exercise, other than walking, but really need to start doing some.

I do well with gamified things such as Duolingo, where you have to complete units. So I think something like that would work for exercise. I know nothing about consoles but after a google a Nintendo Switch and Ring Fit Adventure seems like it would work for me. I know years ago there was Wii Fit as well.

My issue is though how expensive it is, so don’t want to make a mistake. Does anyone have any recommendations for gamified exercise, that isn’t just Pilates etc? I think the dance ones would appeal as well, but the Ring Fit seems pretty ideal as you have to go through different levels and worlds. I’m a bit overwhelmed by the different consoles - PlayStation, xbox, Nintendo. So want to make sure I make the right choice.

Switch is good because you can get ringfit but also games like just dance and Zumba

I found Ring Fit Adventures to be one of the only things I could stick with as I'm a non-exerciser. I did it most days for three months straight, and found a noticeable improvement in my breathing when walking uphill in particular.

Unfortunately life then got in the way and I dropped off, but I really enjoyed it. There was a thread on here about 2 or 3 years ago where people shared positives on it.

Also agree that Just Dance is a good one if you do it properly - it's quite tempting to just sit down and move your hands!

They’re good for getting a bit more movement in if you’re very inactive, but having played Wii fit back in the day I question how much actual exercise they provide.

it’ll be individual though and some movement is better than none. A good long walk will probably be better exercise though. There are also so many free work out videos you can follow on YouTube. It just seems like a lot of money for what is likely to be a limited amount of exercise.

Why don't you start by sticking a play through of Ringfit Adventure on YouTube and seeing if you'd like it? Or just dance on YouTube is quite good too

@Trainstrike I had a read of that thread, it did seem very positive. Wasn’t sure if in the years after that anything else had got popular. It looks like £250 for a Switch then about £25 for the game so I’m ummming and ahhhing about it.

Yes we already had a Switch for the children so we didn't have to make the initial outlay. It's much better than the Wii Fit though - there are multiple different exercises and games so you can focus more on cardio, strength, arms, legs etc.

That’s a good idea. I think I’ll try this before paying out.

I found it really clunky and slow. There are much better things out there.

I know, I seem really resistant to just getting on with it. In the past I went to a gym for about a decade, used to do fitness videos, and used to run (badly). I tried a Pilates video a few months back but just did it once.

I’ve become incredibly lazy. I don’t have a problem with walking for an hour or so a day as I listen to a podcast. So the video idea is a last ditch attempt to find something I actually want to do.

I was positive about the gaming side of it too but found the loading frustratingly slow when I decided I actually wanted to exercise….

LegoLivingRoom · 04/01/2026 21:33

I loved completing ring fit. Much more motivating than other exercises I had tried. Once I got my fitness up (and I completed the game) I moved on to strength classes, but I still occasionally get it out. (Once you complete the final boss you can go through the levels again.

Bayleaf30 · 05/01/2026 13:39

I’ve gone ahead and bought it. May live to regret it, but I think it’s worth a go.

Just to update on this, I’ve been doing this every day now for the last 4 days. It works in that I’m annoyed if I fail a level and really want to do it again, and in general want to work my way along the adventure path. It doesn’t feel like a boring chore doing it which I find with all other exercise. So a win so far!

I’m not finding it slow to load, just a bit of a faff with the leg strap and the controller in the ring.
