I’ve been gifted £200 by work colleagues due to being off work currently following breast cancer surgery. I’m very lucky that it’s been caught early and with some radiotherapy and medication, should hopefully be on top of it.
It’s made me re-evaluate my health so I’m looking to get a fitness watch to encourage me to move more.
im looking at the Apple Watch SE which is currently £219. Before I purchase, just looking to see if anyone here has any other similar priced recommendations?

I’m on my third Apple Watch and they’re brilliant if you have an iPhone.

The activity and sleep tracking are great. I recently had open heart surgery and it picked up some atrial fibrillation at exactly the same time as the heart monitor in the ICU.

pinkpony88 · 01/01/2026 16:20

I have the exact same and I love it. I mainly bought it for swimming laps so I don’t have to count but I think it’s motivating to see your heart rate etc. wouldn’t be without it now ☺️

LoudSnoringDog · 01/01/2026 16:22

Super thanks both. I’ve got an iPhone so it’s good to see it’s easily compatible.

oooo can I piggyback on? I am looking to upgrade from my FitBit (the clock face is getting less & less usable) to a fancier watch. My nephew has a Garmin, which looks fab, but he advised if I'm an iPhone user the Apple Watch might be better. But apparently the battery needs charging very frequently ie every couple of days. Is that so?

MsSeuss · 01/01/2026 16:38

Really love mine and would recommend it. It pairs well with Strava if that’s your thing.

LoudSnoringDog · 01/01/2026 16:39

Oh yes I’ve got a strava account. I’m sold. Going to order one now

I wouldn’t order the SE, I’d be looking at the latest model or comparing what you miss out on with the SE model.

Yes, I'd say it needs charging daily (I use mine a lot). I just stick it on charge overnight along with my phone.

Glittertwins · 01/01/2026 17:41

DS’s needs charging every day when he’s using it for training sessions (when he hasn’t left it on the charger at least).

ParmaVioletTea · 01/01/2026 17:42

So you can't really use it to track sleep patterns? or as an alarm ...

and yes to this too. Do a comparison online for functionality , the SE models are generally lower spec

Hogmanayeayesir · 01/01/2026 17:44

It charges amazingly fast though! I set it charging when I go in the shower and when I'm out and dressed it's usually fully charged again. Much faster than a phone.

SiobahnRoy · 01/01/2026 17:45

The SE is a great buy, no need to spend more.

Hogmanayeayesir · 01/01/2026 17:45

That's an Apple Watch v9.

Mine needs charging every day and I charge it for the last hour before bed. The new ones come with a fast charger and it takes an hour at most. I have successfully used mine to track sleep patterns and scores since having the fast charger.

I just take mine off after tea when I have a shower and put it back on when I get into bed. That’s more than enough time for it to charge up again.

I just charge mine while I’m in the bath, it’s got a fast charger so that’s usually long enough. DH likewise. We both wear them overnight.
Wr find them very good, useful in all sorts of ways.

LoudSnoringDog · 02/01/2026 08:37

Thanks all. Some helpful tips here, especially about charging.

I purchased one last night for £219

I got a garmin vivo active 5 recently and I really love it. Far superior to my old Fitbit and pairs well with my iPhone.

I have the Apple Watch SE and have really struggled to remember to use it properly. Any recommendations for killer apps that will really make me get into it? I am grossly sedentary with a very stressful job so something that starts super basic would be amazing!

BitOutOfPractice · 03/01/2026 14:09

Oh op you’ll love it! I love mine and wouldn’t be without it now!

good luck with your treatment and to A full and speedy Recovery

If you are grossly sedentary why not set and aim to meet your stand and move goals?

I find the 'Breathe' function where it just tells you when to breathe in and out for a minute is actually quite helpful for de-stressing.

I use it all the time for reminders (siri remind me to put a wash on at 7pm, siri remind me that it's DD's non-uniform day tomorrow at 8pm etc etc)

eurochick · 03/01/2026 19:29

They do need charging daily, but as others have said, they don’t take long to charge. When I first had mine it kept running out of charge as I would forget to charge it but now I have a routine. I take it off when I wake up (so I have sleep data) and put it back on when I come out of the shower. That is plenty of time to top up the charge and is something I can remember.

Placestogo · 24/01/2026 11:24

I bought an apple watch serie 11 three weeks ago (on amazon, 5 payments no interest) and i love it!
i wasn’t particularly keen on body measures but now i am onsessed with the sleep tracker and as a result i am making chages to get more/better sleep!!
not sure about the ring thing, it doesnt do it for me.
i do like the different displays, the timers, the recording of workouts, and the “beep-your-phone-to-find-it”, the torch light is great too.
there are probably other functionalities i haveyet to discover but so far, i am very pleased.
the only thing i dont like is the mirroring of apple map when i am driving. I havent found a way yet to disable it
