Winter running top or jacket

Hi all

I run twice a week and hate the treadmill but I'm now too cold in just my leggings and long sleeve base layer (sometimes with a short sleeve t-shirt over it).

Can anyone recommend a jacket or fleece type thing that's warm but not too sweaty? Also please can you advise on how they should fit. Should they be skin tight? I don't want to spend a fortune.

Thanks

I'd go for a lightweight quarter zip microfleece. Make sure you've got gloves and a running headband though - I'm still fine in a long sleeve base and top as long as I have those. Regarding fit, not baggy and not skin right would be my preference.

I really like my under armour cold gear, but I'm still working out about layering for the current temperatures.

That’s helpful thanks. Running headbands knock my AirPods out though. Can you recommend any that won’t?

I must be a minority as I get so hot - was just in a long sleeve and 3/4 leggings yesterday! Lidl have winter running gear in their special buys atm if you wanted to try something out quite cheaply. I think they have gillets and thicker tops. I have some headphones with loops around the ears so they don’t fall out too.

If you want cheap I brought a couple of long sleeved tops from Aldi last year (but this is the time of year they have them on sale) and they’re a bit thicker and warmer than the usual base layer. I wore one last night over a short sleeves running T-shirt with a pair of gloves and was plenty warm enough, pregaps even a little too warm on the hills. Was only wearing capri leggings too.

some great ideas - will check out Aldi and Lidl. Thanks!

I actually use these: https://amzn.eu/d/ggmBRLU

I find they aren't as snug as a lot of headbands so annoy me less! Might be ok with airpods and I think they are also pretty cute!

I have a gilet from Decathlon that I wear over a long sleeve top. I’m good in that unless it gets very cold.

I know it sounds ridiculous but when there is snow, my best cold gear is a thin high neck cashmere top with a light zipped sweatshirt. It is the perfect combination of light and warm.

DelilahBucket · 31/12/2025 23:44

Decathlon is really good for winter wear. I have a light fleece lined outer layer and fleece lined leggings. They aren't heavy, but when the wind is biting they are great. I always start with a neck buff, hat and gloves as well, but often these come off after a while!

decathlon fleece cardigan
has pockets with zips which is great for keys and tissues.

themissmiss · 01/01/2026 19:28

@Whizzingwhippet I like those too but they do knock AirPods out. I probably need new headphones

thanks to all who have taken the time to respond. Will check out Decathlon too
